The Padres are currently 74-69, which is their lowest number of games above .500 since May 12th.
The Padres have not been below .500 all season.
Their lowest point was on April 21st, when they were 10-10.
Will they finish above, at or below .500?

If they like their coaching staff/management, they'd probably better beat .500 - anything less could spell disaster for someone or more that someone.
With the way they're going, and the schedule they have in front of them? I don't think they'll do it. They are fortunate that the rest of the WC candidates are almost as pathetic as the Padres (but watch out for the Cardinals…)

0Jayce Tingler saying they're scuffling right now doesn't truly capture what's happening on this team.
It was interesting that when AJ Cassavell tried to press the question, Tingler went Waa-waaa-waa, then tried to circle his wagons on making sure no one thought they were quitting, and then the interview suddenly went fade to black. So it was either cut short or cut off, but someone clearly was unwilling to allow that line of questioning to continue tonight. Very strange indeed…
Frankly, if this losing streak continues into St. Louis, I wouldn't be sorry to see Tingler fired. While it probably wouldn't make a bit of difference, it would allow the Padres to find someone during the off-season who might be better at orchestrating the kind of coaching staff this team needs. When you look at what the Giants are doing right now - and how they're doing it… Padres seem to be in the dark. Whether that's a managerial thing or an organizational thing or a bad combination of the two, they need to come to terms with the fact that whatever it is they think they're doing … just. isn't. working.
Blowing off the last two months of the season with this level of talent is crazy. Hoping some random variable like a home run or a oddball hit will somehow turn this clown car around is the height of fantasy. Relying on a wing and a prayer would likely be just as productive…
I think Joe Musgrove will have a strong performance tomorrow. I hope that will invigorate some of the sleeping bats on the Padres. We'll see …

They lost 6-1 with Arrieta pitching. I wouldn't be so mad if they lost 6-3, 6-4.
Part of that is taking pride in yourself to go out there and treat every at bat as if it's a close game, and to have the belief in yourself and your teammates that you can come back and win the game - even if you're down by several runs late.

Part of that is taking pride in yourself to go out there and treat every at bat as if it's a close game, and to have the belief in yourself and your teammates that you can come back and win the game - even if you're down by several runs late. They're not putting together good at bats right now, and they're not playing station-to-station to even try to get something going. The pitching they've faced is bonafide outstanding lately, but they're just not battling at the plate. It's like some of them are just going through the motions - as you alluded to, not treating every AB as if it's possibly their last one. This isn't all about urgency, it's more about focus. And that seems to be clearly lacking for too many players right now. Yes, it's less than a week to the first day of fall, and yes, everybody's feeling the effects of playing 140+ ball games. But there are plenty of teams that are biting the bullet right now - so to speak - and continue to grind it out. These last 3 weeks will obviously be some last chances for certain Padres this season, so hopefully a few sparks start igniting a larger fire. Regardless, ownership needs to take a much closer look at who's at the helm, what they're doing right - but more importantly, what they're doing wrong and how that can be rectified before next season. Player development as well as training and conditioning seem to be ripe for some big changes. Why there's no one in the organization to pick up that "next man up" slack - particularly with pitching - is just mind-boggling to me.

Not much hope left for the Padres. The injuries to the pitching have been very difficult to overcome, if you look at not just big names but potential reinforcements/innings eaters also spending so much time on the shelf.
I really hope Clevinger is able to stay healthy in 2022, as he had other assorted injuries besides the Tommy John last year --but is still young.
Still, it is hard to really bank on him and Lamet making 30 starts, so Preller will need to sign some depth insurance SPs.

Today's starter--Pierce Johnson.
Hope he gets an at bat, which means the Padres will have scored lots of runs in the 1st.

I say the Padres go on a run right now, and get into the playoffs. Why? Heck, I don't know. It just sounds good!!!

Pham with one of the biggest hits of the season there, given the matchup and the situation.

Crismatt scoreless through 4 innings. A great outing. Hope we score lots in the 6th, as Adams is warming in the 'pen.

Padres held on for the split.
This is a far better scenario going into St. Louis than it could've been for them. Some important bats are waking up. Some highly used relievers are getting a second wind. Going into the end of the season on a much higher note than they the one they were playing just a few days ago.

Padres now 76-70.
Cardinals off tonight.
Padres trail the Cards by 1/2 game (1 in the loss column).
Reds trail the Padres by 1/2 game, after their 1-0 win today. They trail the Padres by 1 game in the loss column.
This weekend, it's Padres at St Louis, and Dodgers at Cincinnati.

There's still that matter of actually having a starting pitcher for the Wild Card game … They've got to get Musgrove lined up. Who else is there? I sure don't want any of the others starting that game unless they're healthy. Darvish? which one? Snell? which one? Paddack? forget it. Don't want Lame-T, either.
