Uh-oh. Hosmer back in the lineup tonight. At least Tatis is at SS, but Velasquez is starting on the hill. I'm almost tempted to bring my glove. And...Pham is batting cleanup.

They'll need plenty of pinch hitters to grind it out tonight.

Fun fact:
The Rays clinched a post-season birth today (the 7th time in 24 seasons).
At one point, the Rays and Padres had identical records, at 50-36.
Since then, the Rays have gone 44-23, and the Padres have gone 26-38.
Guess it wasn't such a fun fact after all.

2-10 since the disastrous trip to LA. So much for "playing to win" … They've got nothing left to leave on the field.
Except crap.
And they're leaving plenty of that.

Just how many different cleanup hitters has Tingler put in his musical chairs lineups over the course of the season? There appear to have been 8 different position players used in the cleanup spot to start games this season. Hosmer and Machado 36 starts each. Tatis Jr. 32. Cronenworth 22. Pham 14 (counting tonight). Myers, Frazier and Nola had the remaining cleanup starts between them. With all of that, it is still the most productive spot in the Padres lineup this season.

Ryan, did the Padres ask about Bryan Reynolds when we traded for Frazier? I'm assuming Soto is completely off the table for the Nationals.
If we can't make a trade for a corner bat in the offseason, do we go for Conforto, resigning Pham, or someone else?
It's fairly frustrating that the 1-2 year corner bats that are upgrades over the FA options are all on contending teams.
With Hassell and Abrams waiting in the wings, its not clear that we want/need more then a year or two out of a corner bat to bridge the gap to our prospects. Unless of course we could get a legit star like Reynolds/Soto.

There's options available on the free agent market, but it's so early and they need to shed salary.

It always is the most productive lineup spot for RBI's because there are the highest number of runners in scoring position for the cleanup hitter, regardless of who is hitting. But to optimize it should always be a hitter with a high slugging percentage - Tatis, Machado, maybe Cronenworth. Pham or Hosmer in that slot is awful.

It will be interesting to see if they sign a corner outfielder or a center fielder as their primary "money" OF signing. If they sign a CF then they could resign O'Grady on the cheap, and still have Grisham/Myers/Profar. If they resign Pham then the question becomes, do they sign a cheap backup CF, or rely on one of the corner outfielders to backup Grisham? Looking at O'Grady's minor league stats, I think that he could put up better MLB numbers if given playing time

They're absolutely teeing off on Knehr. 4 straight rockets, luckily most of them right at people. Finally kept it down to the last batter of the 1st inning and luckily only gave up one run.

And know, Knehr gives up a home run to Dansby Swanson. Knot very good pitching. The story of the 2021 San Diego Padres…

And the teeing off continues. Just about everything is hit hard, including tbe home run.

There's literally no one else left to pitch. With all these bullpen games, it's just a mess. Really surprised we haven't seen a position player on the mound recently.

Fortunately, Knehr only gave up 3 runs after getting tattooed all game.

Padres 78-77.
Eliminated from playoff contention.
All they have now are individual numbers, and whether or not they can finish at or above .500.
If they finish at or above .500, it will be only the 18th time in franchise history, in 53 seasons of Padres baseball.

This game pretty much sums up the 2nd half of the season for them. Incredibly frustrating.

My post has been corrected. Then again, 18 out of 53 isn't all that great either.

It's a big if… and with the tight race between SF and LA, they're not going to be giving up games between now and the end of the season. Padres aren't going to break even on their last 6 games with the Dodgers and Gigantes.
But in the overall picture, does it matter which side of .500 ± .01 they fall on? It's mediocrity either way.
