I was at the game. Jamaal missed the last second shot that would have won the Game. These were grown men he was playing against. Everybody on the opposing team gets paid to play basketball, most notibly, Taj Gibson of the Chicago Bulls and Marcus Williams, former 1st Rd pick of the Memphis Grizzlies, and Bobby Brown who spent time with Sacramento Kings, and New Orleans Hornets. Jamaal played out of his mind. The video speaks for itself. These highlights don't show Deshawn's performance, but he was tough as nails against much bigger guys. Deshawn is noticably more athletic than Taj Gibson and he has a bigger motor to go with it. Sky's the limit for Deshawn. He will be our best big this year hands down. Winston didn't play. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G1a4JpmZUk&feature=share

I love hearing about how well Deshawn is doing......not playing until recently has its advantages as a player can get really good really fast....incrementally it gets tougher to be great, but from what I see he is improving so much he could be a huge standout next season. The way he played the last few games last year proves he has what it takes. Once he believes he's that good...look out!

Jamaal destroyed the Drew this year. He made yesterday look like a video game. It hilarious how folks think he's all of a sudden gonna put an SDSU jersey on and take his foot off the gas. The guy is going to lead the nation in scoring. He'll at least be in the top 3. Last years nation leading scorer averaged 25 ppg. I can't see how College teams are going to be able to stop Jamaal from getting 25 a night, I just don't...And I definetly don't see Jamaal stopping himself. The Aztecs are going to be a much higher scoring, uptempo team this year. Deshawn Stephens will be our 5 man and he runs the floor like a damn deer! Dwayne Polee running the wing, Chase hitting jumpers, JJ O'brien and X doing what they do. I smell a final 4. No bull $#!+.

If the defender is an outstanding ball pressure guy, Jamaal will struggle, but if he's just a normal defender, Jamaal has no problem bringing the ball up the court. The defense is at his mercy.

I was making an immature joke about balls in his hands. Great to see him improving those skills. I'd love to see some of those transition threes turn into transitions layups with improved ballhandling.

The transition 3 is a shot that people will always hate, but a shot Jamaal will always look to take. When he's hot, nobody will complain. As he matures he'll realize that shot isn't worth it in terms of %, and defensive floor balance. The young Kobe Bryant took the transition pull up 3 90% of the time. It's hard to stop a pure scorer from shooting the shots they like the most.

Glad to hear about Jamaal...no one questions his ability or heart.
I was hoping to read this summer that WinShep was tearing up a summer league, but sounds like he's barely played. I'm hoping that it's just a late start and numbers thing and that he'll be able to contribute this year. An early season suspension for 3-4 games won't help.

It's gonna be a good year. Can't wait to see "INYO" (in your face) Franklin light it up again. Don't know about Final 4, but it will be the most exciting BB we've ever had on the Mesa.

I guess one difference between him and Kobe(among many) is that as a Lakers fan I was able to live with Kobe's mistakes as we had time for him to improve. Selfishly speaking as an SDSU fan I want Jamaal to improve his efficiency at a higher rate. I have no problem with a heat check three, but a pull up three with a man in your face shouldn't be part of your arsenal as a player. With Jamaal's ability at the line, he's damn near unstoppable at times driving to the basket, that's what I want to see the majority of the time.

The worst thing about that pull up 3 is he makes it sometime... I think its a way to get some quick point without using a lot of energy. When a guy a backing off, it's much harder for Jamaal NOT to take that shot than it is for him to take it.

If the defender doesn't have to worry about a possible 3 he can defend differently. Having that arrow in his quiver also allows for some hesitation moves that are quite effective. With this team's athleticism, a pull up three should be a rebounding advantage for the Aztecs since transition doesn't allow for opponents to block out as easily. With the athletes we have we will most always be better at the scramble type rebounds.

Jamaal can take that pull up three 3 or 4 times early, then the defense will stretch out to cover and leave a wide open pass to a slashing guard or forward going to the hoop, that would help public perception of Jamaal big time.

Not only does it look like he has refined his shot even more than last year (Better arc and continuing better form) but he really looks like he's filled out more...which I really like and what I think will help him a lot next year.
He's always been crazy tough and he's always had terrific strength to maintain his balance, but it looks like he's gained about 5-10 pounds of muscle which will really help out when he gets inside, whether for his rebounds or when he drives to the basket.

A couple of years ago when we had some great bigs, the throw up a three and hope we make it offense did pretty well since we had an offensive rebounding machine inside.
