You also get to call them out when they make major boneheaded mistakes - like the one Pham just made on the bases by getting picked off with the meat of the order coming up and one out. WTF is he thinking in that situation - or is he thinking at all. One step forward, two steps back. Good grief. Exactly. Why are you being even slightly aggressive in that situation, with the big boys coming up. You take zero risk there.

He was overaggressive. Happens. You can't say that the same situation happens if Pham is still on second base. The pitcher is more relaxed now, and he's not looking over at second base anymore.

It would have been bases loaded with one out if he doesn't get picked off and Hosmer's ball was a routine, room service double play that would have ended the inning. I have no idea about feelings of comfort, but let's not obsess over every single detail. How about two errors on one play by Fernando? Crickets....

Mental errors are way more glaring than physical errors, and that was a bad one. I do like the way he's performing at the plate though. Tatis is having a rough time in the field so far this year, but boy does he make up for it in MANY other ways.

I mean, I'm glad he produced offensively, but he has 14 errors and is a literal mess in the infield because he's trying to protect his shoulder at the expense of abandoning his footwork.

He does it on the base paths in a big way as well, and good point regarding why his throws are in the dirt half the time, or off target.

His defense is so bad analytically that it basically wipes out his baserunning value. Similar to Hosmer, but with the positional adjustment factored in. Fernando's obviously elite offensively, but with even zeroed out defense (neutral), he'd be the top WAR producer probably in the majors.

Pham has scored a run in 7 straight games, reaching base 14 times during that stretch with 3 SB's. I think he's more than made up for being a little overly aggressive once. Our DNA is being aggressive. Sometimes it backfires, like it did a couple times today. It happens. It's who we are. I'd rather have him get to 2nd & be picked off than any one of several other potential outcomes.

As it turns out, the Padres could've really used that run today …

Big guns up, you play it regular, no aggression at all. Having said that, I'm definitely encouraged by his month of May and his offensive production.

Exactly, and if you've pitched before you know what I mean. Mmhmm. Oh, so you were once a pitcher on a high level? Great, then like I said, you know what that scenario feels like.

I mean, I'm glad he produced offensively, but he has 14 errors and is a literal mess in the infield because he's trying to protect his shoulder at the expense of abandoning his footwork. I know this sounds crazy, but I kind of wonder if he gets moved to another position at some point. Cronenworth can play SS, so can Kim, so can Abrams. Tatis has committed so many errors this year. It will be interesting to see what happens if Abrams continues his ascent and is ready by 2022, or no later than 2023. Cronenworth isn't going anywhere, he's a friggin stud. The first obvious answer is Tatis to CF, but Grisham is a gold glove CF and only 24 YO. You don't want to move him either. Tatis to LF? -----DENNIS LIN'S MAILBAG/ THE ATHLETIC Where is CJ Abrams going to play? With the emergence of Jake Cronenworth, he seems blocked at second base. Are they really going to move Grisham off center field? — Adam D. Abrams, one of the best prospects in baseball, seems on track to join the Padres in 2022, if not late this summer. When he does, he should have the flexibility to play all over the field, if needed. It’s possible, though, that he will see more than infrequent big-league time at shortstop, his primary position. Tatis still has significant room for defensive improvement, and the Padres should give their franchise player a chance to stay at shortstop. If Abrams develops as hoped, however, there could be a world in which the team’s ideal defensive configuration has him at short, Tatis in center field and Grisham in one of the corner outfield spots. Given that Grisham is a Gold Glove center fielder, this might sound like a stretch. But the Padres think Tatis, if he ever moves off shortstop, could be one too. Meanwhile, Cronenworth has emerged as a potential star second baseman, and Grisham provides the kind of offense that would profile at any outfield position. The Padres also will face a need in the corners. Pham will be a free agent this winter. Myers will be one next winter. As for Abrams, his progress at shortstop has been striking. When he was drafted in 2019, scouts doubted his ability to stay there. Now, they see him becoming a fine big-league shortstop. He does not have Tatis’ arm strength, but his other defensive actions on the left side are more than adequate. Of course, his defensive trajectory will depend on his continuing development and Tatis’ preferences. The Padres aren’t just going to hand Abrams the most premium position on the field, and they have not yet had a serious discussion with Tatis regarding a potential change. I do expect there will be at least some conversation along these lines in the not-so-distant future, if not as early as next year. I also could be dead wrong; there certainly could be a world in which Abrams settles elsewhere (say, second base or center field) and Tatis spends at least several more years starring as a shortstop.
