Me too, old that is. Tony certainly can't be left out. I still haven't seen a poor choice for favorite player(s) from anyone.
Sheesh! I can't believe you guys are still able to talk, hold conversations, remember anything (especially the games), type and read anything let alone AztecMesa. Some days I can hardly believe it myself.

Tony Gwynn bounce passes for layup assists in Peterson Gym. Yea I'm that old. I’m pretty sure Tony Gwynn played his home games at the San Diego Sports Arena.

I’m pretty sure Tony Gwynn played his home games at the San Diego Sports Arena. They were playing some home games in Peterson in the 90s. Tony played '77 to '81. I think he had more games at the Pete than the Sports Aroma. Anyway the OP asked who is your favorite from the Fish/Dutcher era, not prior. Can't believe nobody has mentioned Frenchy yet. I don't even remember his real name, just that we all called him Frenchy. Another not often mentioned player from Fish's early days is Aerick Sanders. But I think Richie Williams was my favorite to watch, along with, of course Kawhi and Malachi.

Al Faux. Hard to believe that this month it will be 20 years since he hit 7 threes the night we routed Oklahoma State. He was unconscious that night.

Note favorite does not necessarily mean best, but there is a correlation. 1) x 2) Wetzel 3) slauter 4) Malachi 5) DJ 6) Josh Davis - even though he could not reliably hit a shot (even FT) from more than 6’
Prior to fisher era: long ranger
Favorite games, again not the most important but favorites 1) nm comeback - my all time favorite Aztec moment 2) nm home cinch of MW 3) Recent Gonzaga win 4) UCLA recent away win 5) Kansas away win

All of Tony Gwynn’s home basketball games were at the Sports Arena, with Tim Vezie and Smokey Gaines. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/san-diego-state/1978-schedule.htmlThe team moved to Peterson Gym after Brandenburg’s last disastrous season 1991/92. The plans for Viejas had just been finalized and then AD Fred Miller decided to hold the games back on campus for a few years before moving to the new arena....it just didn’t make sense pay rent to play games in a cavernous eyesore.

But then it hit me, I am getting really old. Hell, I am going to catch up with AzTex if I don’t slow down. Man winning games like Okie State was huge back then as no one really expected us to pull out victories. Man Al was amazing that night, and one of the reasons I called him out as a fav right at the beginning of this thread. There were sure good games back then from Okie State, to Tark bringing his ranked Fresneck State team here, to Arizona, etc. We could get good teams back then because no one thought we could win. Now, no one wants to come because they know the chance of winning is so small. 20 years ago with Al going original assassin brings joy but also depression with my age. Ugh

This is a testament to how far this program has come and the quality of men that have suited up, that we've all got many favorites.
Earlier on it would've been Randy Holcomb/Al Faux/Deandre Moore. Then guys like Abukar/Slaughter/Heath. Then Kawhi/DJ Gay/Tapley. Then X/JJO/Shep. Then Trey/Pope/Germ. Now to Dutch's squads.
We've had local guys and guys from LA, Riverside, Sacramento. We've had many successful transfers. I could list favorites at each position lol. Love me some aztec basketball and all these names are bringing up some great memories.

One of my favorite Aztec Mens Hoop moments was when Deandre sank 2 FTs with us down with seconds left to beat CSU...I think. We've all seen players get to the FT line in this situation. They always try to remain calm. Take deep breaths. What's memorable about this is how excited Moore was at the prospect of being the guy in this situation. I've never seen a player as enthusiastic as he was to be the guy in that situation.

Thanks for the correction. Memories of games/players tend to blur over the decades. Was getting Tony confused w another former Aztec who used to coach my daughter. He had some good and bad memories of Peterson Gym. Tony was a solid player. He'd have trouble competing for playing time with modern Aztec squads, but I'm sure he'd adjust to today's game.

Note favorite does not necessarily mean best, but there is a correlation. 6) Josh Davis - even though he could not reliably hit a shot (even FT) from more than 6’ had Josh Davis not have been hurt we might have won that game against Gordon and AZ at the Honda Center. I'm told he arrived and left the Arena on crutches.

Ugh The ultimate revenge of the eldery. We know what you youngsters have to look forward to and know you're catching up rapidly. Soon you'll remember what happened in games 20-30 years ago better than last week's game.

Chase Tapley may have been our smartest player , always played 1 step ahead. Just loved watching him.
