We all pretty much know Chase Tapley and Jamaal Franklin will be the 2 best players on the team. Who will be the most important player that could be the difference between a first round exit and a potential elite 8 appearance tho?
Some candidates: Xavier Thames- Thames had a great start to the season then struggled after a injury, the PG is always the most important position on the offensive end and his distributing and slashing is extremely important. Winston Shepard- Arguably the best defender in high school basketball and has unique point forward skills, he will often be asked to defend the opposing teams best player. Skylar Spencer- One thing was hugely missing from last years good defense, the Aztecs were 287th in blocks per game, Spencer was known as one of the better shot blockers in high school and is very athletic, he has gotten stronger reports suggest. JJ O Brien- O Brien is thought of as a glue guy that can do a little bit of everything. Dwayne Polee- Polee is one of the more athletic players to ever play for SDSU and has the potential to take over a game on the defensive end and score well in transition. James Johnson- Johnson a big that is athletic and has a perimeter game will be eligible in the second semester. James Rahon- Rahon was bothered with foot injury but still has ability to shoot the 3 well. Deshawn Stephens- Stephens can rebound at a high level and showed good progress throughout the year.

I voted for X-man. It all starts with the point, it's his ball.

I went with JJ O'Brien, it was reported by many last year that JJ was consistently the best player on the team (in practice). If he can take some of the scoring load off of Jamaal and Tap... I'd rank the remaining as follows: 2) Shep: Defense defense defense, solid rebounder and good facilitator 3) X: If he can return to pre-injury form... look out 4) DeShawn/Sky: Toss-up, I'm leaning towards Sky since he has a couple inches and 10-15lbs. on DS 5) Polee: Needs to show he can do more than JUMP 6) Rahon: Will fill a role, but I fear will be a forgotten man 7) Johnson: Over-rated coming out of HS, or in a bad system for him at VA?

I'm going to go with X, mainly because he will be fully healthy and have the explosiveness back. Also I'm guessing Deshawn will make a huge step forward

I voted Deshawn Stephens, simply because we're losing Garrett Green and we need the defense and rebounds in the post position. Once Malcolm Thomas and Carlwell were gone, we were lucky to get Garrett because after that, it dropped off very quickly (Shelton was limited in height and athleticism, and Deshawn was still very raw due to his lack of experience).
I think we will man handle a lot of teams in guardplay. We are athletic, quick, and experienced. We will need a solid post player with experience, and I think Deshawn will fit that role.

Not trying to be a smart alec, but all of them. We need every single one of them to work as hard as they can individually and as a team. They all have different roles, and if they all perform well in their specific roles, expect the Aztecs to do some damage come March. Can't wait!

Fish has spoken often about the key being chemistry of the team moreso than any other factor. He is a great coach for that and having coaches like Dutch and Bland seem to make a difference also. Bland has been a Godsend for that.

If X can return to the level he was at in the pit last year he will be a very important cog in the wheel of victory. Don't forget WVB next weekend.

I can think of a very important role and need from each of these players. If they each fill their role and step up when called upon, finding each other on offense, while going full out on D, it will be a special team.

JJ
I looked at it if one of those guys goes down, how bad off are we? If an athletic glue guy for us goes down, we're worse off. I know others went with X. My reasoning for not is Tap can run the point if X goes down with LBF coming in.
