Here is a comparison of the basketball arenas of the current MWC and Big West members. This is just one piece of data to help people understand what a huge step down the Big West would be for our basketball program. While you are at it, take a look at the Big West members and you will see what a lowly bunch of teams this is. Except for AFA, the MWC has large Division I arenas that are comparable to all the major Division I conferences. They have a true Division I Big Time Basketball feel that lower level conference gyms will never match. It's bleacher time, baby! UNLV: 18,776 UNM: 17,126 Wyo: 15,028 Boise St. 12,820 SDSU: 12,414 CSU: 8,745 TCU: 7,200 (Leaving) AFA: 5939 Coming soon; Fresno State: 15,544 Nevada: 11,784 Now here are some pics and the capacities of the "Small time" Big West Gyms: Cal State Northridge (Capacity 1600) Cal State Fullerton (Capacity 4,000): UC Davis (Capacity 8000) Pacific (Capacity 6150) Long Beach State (Capacity 5000) UC Irvine (Capacity 4984) UC Riverside (Capacity 3168) Virtual tour: www.yourcampus360.com/college360.php?pano=3250&college=ucriverside&category=Cal Poly (Capacity 3032) UCSB (Capacity 5600)

Is Big East deal done already?
How long until we find out about a Big West deal after that happens?

You should have included a pic of Peterson Gym just for grins & giggles.

They currently play the Big West Conference Tourney in Anaheim (at the Honda Center), so it's not that far of a drive if they keep it there.
I would be all for just moving it to Viejas Arena.
It would probably be cheaper for the conference too.

Hawaii is joining the Big West next year. They are fortunate to have a large arena that is a center of major events for all of Hawaii, in addition to Men's basketball. The Arena seats 10,300 for basketball and they drew an average of 6,083 for men's basketball games. However, once again this is not a team that will be making it to the top 25 anytime soon, which is a common theme historically in the Big West. Here is a pic of Hawaii's basketball arena:

Yep. This is the biggest downside of the Big West. The Davis Arena is probably the best of the bunch Attachments:

You should have included a pic of Peterson Gym just for grins & giggles. Just for you, the capacity of Peterson Gym is 3,668. If we still played there we would fit in perfect with the Big West. I am sure glad we have come so far. Here is a pic of our Vollyball team playing there:

DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA Nothing but facts. No drama intended. If you don't believe moving to the Big West is a huge step backward for our program, you are delusional. Fisher has been working for years to bring us up to the level of the Big Boys. It will be a shame to move to a lowly conference.

I am looking forward to hearing Fisher's thoughts on this. He is not a spin doctor and usually plays it straight.

BTW, I have been to at least 1/2 of the Big West arenas. You cannot even begin to compare the crowds at Viejas, the Pit, and Thomas & Mack to the crowds at these gyms. They are worlds apart. For example, the exciting game at UCSB that I was at last week was extremely mild compared to the deafening crowds at the Madhouse on the Mesa. Sadly, if we bring in Big West teams to Viejas, our crowd size will dwindle big time. No one wants to watch the bottom feeders of Division I basketball.

Fisher has been working for years to bring us up to the level of the Big Boys. It will be a shame to move to a lowly conference. Your OPINION that opponents' basketball gyms will totally submarine the hard work that Steve Fisher has done to put OUR program on the map and OUR arena one of the best atmospheres in college basketball is a huge insult to Coach Fisher. Is it a step backwards in terms of conference competition? Yes. Is it a huge step backwards? No. You're making a huge deal (arenas) out of nothing. 4 of those arenas are truly s#!++y. (CSUF, CSUN, Poly, and UCR) We've already played at UCR so that's really 3 new s#!++y arenas that our poor Aztecs will have to play in. 4 others are on par with CSU and AFA. (Davis, UOP, LBSU, and UCSB) There are ways around it. It won't be impossible to schedule tough OOC games in Jan/Feb. But please, keep complaining about things you have no control over and selling the abilities of Coach Fisher and his staff short.

LittleBigHorn, if you had the choice of keeping our Basketball team in the MWC (regardless of whether football leaves for the Big East) or moving to the Big West, which would you choose? Explain your answer.

I am very concerned about hoops with this move. I know football is the breadwinner, but for me it is the SDSU basketball season I enjoy most.
