You would think that we beat both Big West teams we played this year by 40...
Santa Barbara is a great gym to play with when there are students in session armed with tortillas.

Pacific (Capacity 6150) Look at all those banners they have...how can that not be legit program? I still have not looked at the Arena or banners!

It does not matter one bit. Gonzaga plays in a League of Band Boxes, and has built a program of National cerdibility. SDSU will continue to play at least half it's games in arenas holding 10K +. And need I point out that one of the most prestigious College basketball tournaments of the past 30 years is played in a high school gym? The Maui Invitational. How about a picture of that gym? College hoops can be played on the deck of an aircraft carrier, and people would show up. And it would be watched on TV by millions. The capacity of Big West Arenas is a moot point. Onward to the 2013 Final Four. Maui is one of the top vacation destinations in the world. The location of the Maui invitational is not the home to a Division I team. That tournament could be held in an old warehouse and people would still show up by the thousands because it is in Maui. Just sayin'. Not a good comparison. I have been to the Maui Gym. You should see the freakin' view.

Big West games are almost completely off the national radar (unless a team like Long Beach State upsets a team like Pittsburgh, then they're a blip at best). Try to spin it however you like, but a move to the Big Worst would be a big step down for SDSU. There is no glossing over it for those who know college basketball. Not one person East of Fort Collins knew who SDSU was until last year, so a $#!+ ton of good the MW contract has done. It took an upset over Gonzaga, & 20 pt win over Cal who are not in the MWC It was the Aztecs win streak & Kawhi, DJ, Billy, and Malcom that landed SDSU on the front landing page of almost every major sports website. It was The Aztecs win streak & Kawhi, DJ, Billy, and Malcom and Jimmer landed SDSU/BYU on CBS national. It was the Aztecs win streak & Kawhi, DJ, Billy, and Malcom that put SDSU on the Map, NOT the MWC.

You all are freaking off your rocker. How many of our fans were a the NM game last season during our BEST SEASON EVER? DJ simply torching a very good team. Answer: about 65. TOTAL. I was there. I know. Those who were there know. You guys are kidding yourselves. It's totally sad. We're all sad were losing a UNM team that we have caught and surpassed in the past 11 years and an UNLV team who admittedly has a great program who we will miss. NM has a nice arena, great fans, and a program that has never made it to a genuine NIT final four or NCAA sweet 16 in over 20 years. We're realistically talking about one nationally significant program here. That's it. LBH...you have lost me. We had 65 fans at the NM basketball game? Where did you come up with this? We sold out most of our games last year. I don't understand what you are saying.

I tried to zoom in, but they were too unclear. If it is anything like UCSB's gym, they are probably banners from Big West titles in Volleyball, Women's basketball, men's basketball, etc. plus an occasional NCAA tourney banner that they earned as an auto-qualifier by winning their conference tournament.

Think he must have confused the football crowd with the basketball crowd? I was at the New Mexico hoops game last year and it was a full house.

Not only will it NOT hurt us, but by virtue of the football agreement, it is much more likely we will have an agreement to National TV games against Louisville, G Town, UConn, Villanova, Notre Damn, Providence and a handful of other NCAA regulars. Put those games on a scheduled along with UNLV, USC, Cal, or any other decent west coat teams and who the hell care what conference we play in.

I'm sure that when we make big runs in the ncaa tournament in 2012, 2013, 2014, etc.., no one will be complaining about what gyms we played in during the year. And if anyone thinks that we wont make the tournament because we are moving to the big west, they are crazy.

Just want to make sure I understand your side of the argument. Those battles that our Aztecs will have at Northridge, Davis, Fullerton, and Stockton are going to rock! Can't wait 'til they role out the bleachers for those epic games! Anyone know if it's byob at those big time arenas, ...er, ...uh, gyms?

Not sure what battles to expect, Aztecs dominate the bw conference, win bw conference tournament, win 2+ NCAA tournament games, have better practice facilities, be considered best NCAA basketball team in Cali. SDSU is a basketball brand created by Fisher that a move from the MWC to the BW only gets stronger.

Boils down to do you want to stay in the MW- under the leadership and track record of "Alliance " Thompson or try the BE-Western Division- with BSU leading the way with their track record. The Big West -if that is the conference we choose does have smaller basketball places to play but there are some positive trade offs, every conference gets at least one bid to the NCAA T, plus Big West has AD on the selection committee. Most important to any recruit playing in the NCAA T. AZTEC fans , possible recruits and families ,who live in the area can attend road games . TV tie ins with ESPN/Sports Center- All home games are still at the V.Conference T is not on UNLV's home court(coach Fisher does not want it played there) We will get more fans at T in Anaheim then in Vegas , yes we have done well in Vegas but last year only won by two and it will get tougher to win on UNLV's home court. Sterk may get some OOC games with BE .Players do not have to take that wonderfull road trip to WYO and CSU- during the winter and play in altitude. BYU is playing in the WCC this year and there are some small arenas there.

so 6 mil tv revenue a year is enough to sell the basketball team down the river? Who is selling down the river? We still have the National Coach of the year We still have Viejas We still have The Show A couple of years in the BW, and (hopefully) schedule home & homes with BE basketball powers, won't kill basketball until a better option pops up. In fact games with UCONN or Louisville will give basketball more exposure. what if in 2015 UNLV gets sick of the "Alliance". SDSU, Boise, UNLV, UNM start a basketball only conference, or Louisville bails the BEast and we bring in UNLV. A lot can happen I like the idea of a Basketball only league that keeps SDSU, UNLV, and NM together. This is a scenario that I would like to see. However, I have to address your other points: "We still have the National Coach of the year" I would expect a Big West move to accelerate Steve Fisher's retirement. If you are a top 50 recruit from L.A. and you have the choice to play in a league like the PAC 12 that regularly has teams in the top 25, vs. playing in a league that has teams like Riverside, Davis, Cal Poly, and Northridge, what are you going to choose? Fisher will recognize that he will have a harder time maintaining the high level of recruiting and go for retirement. "We still have Viejas" There are no teams in the Big West that will generate a lot of excitement in the San Diego community. These teams are not top caliber teams. The crowd in Viejas will suffer and the atmosphere that we currently have will be lost. BTW, just because football ends up in the Big East, does not mean we are going to get teams like Connecticut to fly all the way across the country. If we don't maintain the high level of the program, there will be even less incentive. "We still have The Show" Like it or not, students will not show up for games if we don't have a product that wins and are not playing top caliber teams. The Show will become a shell of itself, not a section filled from the court to the top of the arena with high energy kids.

The notion of playing in the Big West makes me sick. I have been to multiple games at CSUF, having lived there for close to a decade and the place is a high school atmosphere. They occasionally get a decent crowd when they play Long Beach State (their rival), but overall......not very good.
Big West has some damn good baseball, but who really cares about that? Nobody. Non-rev sport. Not much attention.

Your first phrase is precisely the point I'm trying to make - I expect little competition from the likes of Davis, Fullerton, Pacific, and Northridge (read "yawn"). Thanks for sharing your opinion without bashing anyone. We'll all see how far Fisher's "brand" carries us. I hope that you are right, and the Aztecs are able to schedule better out-of-conference foes than those they will be facing in the Big West. Getting fired up for basketball giants like Cal Poly is going to be a real challenge. The good news is that it won't take much to pack their gyms.

And I'm sure we will all just LOVE the Big West after we tear through that league and then play the conference tournament and get upset in the final by LBSU or somebody. Hello NIT. Big West sucks, has crappy gyms, and is a one bid league to the NCAAs.

SDSU hoops can afford to downgrade to the Big West IF......the BEast deal is enough money. I'd say $4.0M per year would do it but it might take $5.0M per year. Anything less would be a mistake.
And who knows, maybe Comcast renegotiates the current MWC deal for $4.0-5.0M per year or matches the BEast deal.
