A "Light Brigade" is a brigade of lancers on horseback without armor. "Heavy Horse" would be lancers wearing armor. Correct? Absolutely! AzWm

William, because they were not heavy cavalry. Light cavalry was for scouting, heavy for attacking. Just so! AzWm

Here is The Politico's take, basically saying that there isn't much the West can do as Putin doesn't care and accurately thinks we wouldn't do anything anyway. He appears to be spot on as we've done nothing. The President didn't even attend his on crisis meeting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, opting instead to let Susan Rice chair it and report to him. Putin gets it. We are the butt of his joke. The question is, does he start looking farther? Estonia and their ethnic Russian population, other parts of Ukraine, back to Georgia, parts of Khazakstan? Russia gives ultimatum to Ukrainian forces in Crimea: Clear out within 11 hours or face 'military storm,' Russian state media report.
(CNN) -- [Breaking news update, posted at 11:22 a.m. ET] Russia has issued an ultimatum to Ukrainian forces in the Crimea to clear out by 5 a.m. Tuesday or face a "military storm," according to Russian state-run news agency Interfax, which cited a Ukrainian Defense Ministry source. Aleksandr Vitko, Russia's Black Sea fleet commander, said that "if they won't surrender by 5 a.m. tomorrow (10 p.m. ET Monday) there will be a military storm on all UA (Ukraine Armed) military forces all over Crimea," Interfax reported, citing a source in Ukraine's Defense Ministry. A Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman, Vladislav Seleznyov, told CNN that members of the Russian military are going to Ukrainian military bases in Crimea and demanding surrender. The Russian troops are threatening "harsh reaction" if the Ukrainians don't comply, Seleznyov said. Ukraine Security Service spokesman Petro Tymchyshyn said there that Ukraine is not aware of any official Russian ultimatum.

The first thing the President should do to bolster his sword-rattling is to call for an immediate halt to his plan to absolutely gut the military. This would at least retain the force option in his full-spectrum whole-of-government response that should also be done unilaterally but also in concert with the leaders of the EU/EC as well as NATO. Of course there is that little thing called a mutual defense treaty we have with Ukraine that we signed not long ago that promises to defend them against Russia... To wit: What an embarrassing mess. I hope the President and his NSC get out ahead of this immediately.

No worries, we are beginning to act decisively! We are sending John Kerry to Kiev (Kyiv) for consultations and not sending a Presidential Delegation to Sochi for the Paralympics. That should do it... Whew!

For my next trick, I'll give everyone the lottery numbers for next Saturday. Let's hope that Putin doesn't keep going into the eastern Crimea. I didn't know about the diplomatic paper (not a treaty) signed by the U.S. and others to protect the Ukraine as 'payment' for them getting rid of their nukes. If Putin escalates then I would expect the Ukraine to ask us to honor our agreement. Then Obama and Cameron are really in a box.

Reporting has been murky whether or not they have already asked us to honor the agreement. I suspect they have privately but not officially as of yet. I haven't had a chance to dig in today and better understand the next step but the situation has a lot of downside, obviously. What we do about it, what red lines we draw, what key Euro leaders do, etc. are what I am watching. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

So what is going to happen there? Is Russia going to set back and await developments? Their Black Sea fleet is based in the southern part of Ukraine. I see that Russia is gearing up for a major military exercise east of Ukraine. It would not surprise me to see Russia invade. The popularion of Crimea, and eastern Ukraine is majority ethnic Russian and would probably not be unhappy to be part of Russia again. Who else has an opinion? Stu, notice in the first post in this thread I said I would not be surprised to see Russia invade.

Krauthammer wants to throw money at the crisis and wave the flag by sending a fleet into the Black Sea. We are aware are we not that Ukraine was part of Russia when we became a country? It is not like they are not related. At one time Ukraine was the Duchy of Rus. Ukraine has been ruled by other countrys for a thousand years. Who knew that it was ruled by Lithuania for several hundred years? Poland and Russia partitioned it between themselves after that. They used the Dnieper River as the line between them. Russia has 150,000 troops on the border, and most of the people in Ukraine along there speak Russian. If Putin wants to invade we can do nothing to stop it. Lots of Ukrainian citizens would be happy to have Russian passports again. My suggestion would for to cut Ukraine to cut a deal. Sell Crimea back to Russia for whatever the national debt of Ukraine is. Russia get their warm sea port and Ukraine gets a fresh start. Here a little history quiz for the history buff, William. Where was the Charge of the Light Brigade? Here you go, Stu, my second post on this thread. Note how I suggest a solution to the Crimea invasion. Did you not read this days ago?

Lord, really? I saw that and didn't want to even bother. It was so ridiculous it wasn't worth commenting. No one else bothered either, if you noticed.
If I may, you want to reward the invasion by handing over the Ukrainians and their homes with all the others in Crimea for a few duckets? That's like Mexico crossing the border then selling off San Diego south of I-8 instead of fighting them off.
So that's all Putin has to do for each phase, right? It's like pre-buying real estate.
Nice game, not sure why I even played. Let's see what kind of substantive, comprehensive, real solution you have.
