The Heavys generally had larger horses too. The Lights had the smaller faster ones. Anyway, the senior British officers at that fiasco were incompetent political appointees who bought their commissions from the Crown. Lord Cardigan paid 35K pounds for his commission. The only competent commander on the field that day was George Mayow. www.badassoftheweek.com/mayow.htmlTrue. If the rider and the horse are armored, the horse had better be big and heavy. Also to take on infantry.

True. If the rider and the horse are armored, the horse had better be big and heavy. Also to take on infantry. One could think heavy cavalry as shock troops. Of course, the Swiss "Pike Square" was very effective in mediaeval times against armored horsemen. Probably could have done the job against heavy cavalry as they were usually armed with lances and sabres. John Buford's division would have taken the Swiss easily. Nothing like repeating rifles to unbalance the scales of war.

Back on topic, it looks like AlwaysanAztec had it right, if this is a full invasion of Crimea, by pieces, is this the limit or will Russia slowly encroach on further sovereign territory?
What will we do?
Time will tell.

Well, I am not surprised.
I understand Europe imports a good deal of energy from Russia. Major natural gas lines pass through Ukraine from Russia to Europe. How does that figure into all this mess?.

At the White House, President Obama said the U.S. government is "deeply concerned" by reports of Russian "military movements" and warned any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty would be "deeply destabilizing."What are the costs? Where is/what is the Red Line that Russia can't cross? That hasn't been stated and Putin has no lines to cross, no real limits other than "there will be consequences." What are they? This is what I am talking about. www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26400035US President Barack Obama said on Friday that "any violation of Ukraine sovereignty... would be deeply destabilising".
He warned of the "costs" of any Russian intervention in the Ukraine and commended the interim government in Kiev for its "restraint".Inspiring leadership

More great warnings! The action came as President Obama delivered blunt warnings to Moscow. 'We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside of Ukraine,' he told reporters at the White House. 'Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing,' he said in a brief appearance. 'The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.' U.S. officials also said the President could scrap plans to attend an international summit in Russia and take negotiations on deepening trade ties with the country off the table in response to Russian involvement in the Ukraine. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel added: "This could be a very dangerous situation if this continues in a provocative way."

I personally am a bit Libertarian, so I believe we should do nothing. I'm sure William will agree. But if we want to swing our dick around the world like we usually try to... Use this as an opportunity to give concessions to/negotiate with Turkey in regards to America's presence in Iraq moving forward, and allow them the increased procurement of American arms they have sought in the recent past. In return, NATO/US/Turkey block access to the Bosphorus/Istanbul Straits for all Russian traffic. Use our "soft power" to further destabilize (see: increase American influence) Syria and Georgia. There are also steps we could take to evolve our relationship with the PRC both militarily and economically, that would further isolate Russia. They would almost all involve substantial trade-offs, though, that many Republicans (and many in general) would not like. I personally don't think Russia is a threat. It seems that the American people, fueled in large part by our media, always need a big, bad, boogie man out there.

Pretty comprehensive, you get credit for that. Nothing happens in the world anymore that doesn't have global impact.
The problem is that multi-lateral treaties as you suggest take years to negotiate and enact. Frameworks, agreements, conferences, etc all have to occur. Russia is in Crimea today, we already have existing treaties and agreements that tell us what to do. A sovereign nation has been invaded similar to previous historical incursions. The US and our EC partners as well as NATO need to fix the issue that they created by not having red lines, consequences, etc and freeze Russia now, diplomatically force them to withdraw or be ready to face the full spectrum of international crippling sanctions.
Empty rhetoric needs to stop and be turned into actions.
More to follow.

This whole situation sounds strangely similar to Germany seizing the sudatenland... I don't see Russia trying for a world takeover or anything that ridiculous but it is a moment where they can test their reach. The world won't do anything about it and sadly that's probably the best course of action (or lack thereof).
