Why do we always(87.3%) ;D play down to our competition? They seem to go brain dead, like they've never seen the zone or a full court press. Never seen some many rebounds go off our hands as in these last 2 games, well, when we were actually in position to rebound. Just when it seemed like we started to get the FT's under control the stupid shots, bad inbound plays and fouls come back. Frustrating!

I think the team is just tired, to be honest. This break will be nice for them.

When did Aztec fans become so graceless? At least entertain the possibility that our opponents play up to the competition.
Beating a team twice within a few weeks in never easy, especially when you have a tired team that's played more games than just about anybody to this point.

Fisher needs to put his team in better situations such as calling timeouts and diagraming plays not letting them continue to fire up 3s and put them in mentally tough times. A little too much Phil Jackson sometimes

The big difference between this years team and last year is that we're finding ways to win the close games against Gonzaga, Cal Poly, IUPUI, etc. Lats years team would probably have 3-4 losses already, but also a few big wins.
But I totally agree with the thread .. get rid of Fisher immediately, suspend the players, this team sucks and makes me embarrassed to be an aztec.

agreed. 14-0 (for the first time ever) and a top 7 rating is under achieving...

Don't take it personal Monty, I just wanted to make a point... As with Phil Jackson in the NBA, Steve Fisher is one of the most successful college basketball coaches ever. I don't get the arguments some have with Fisher (or Jackson)....He is 14-0 this year. Isn't that the point??? To win games?

Phil Jackson owes his f'ing life and every part of it to three of the best basketball players in history. it amazes me that people don't see he's the luckiest coach in nba history to have kobe, mj, and shaq.
Im off topic.

It's OK if they are learning from mistakes now, to become a stronger team later ... as long as they're not losing games while doing it. And although we have a bunch of seniors on the team .. we almost always have 2-3 sophs and sometimes a freshman in the game at the same time.

That's why I modified it: 'sometimes' I think he, like Phil, lets his teams feel themselves through things - which can be very effective; but, there are times you teach lessons by micromanaging and Jackson does that as well demonstratively at times. Fisher has a set pattern and keeps to it which is great because he gives some leverage and continuity for his players. But, jackson will sometimes call an unexpected timeout and diagram something for effect and sometimes will let his team lose by 15 for example. I think there are times when Fisher needs to step in. No where near saying he has to go, I just think there are some things he could do and also that he rightly earns the 'roll the ball out' with his in-game (non-halftime-adjustment) coaching

Malcom said in the post game interview that they were playing lousy because they were worn out from playing at such a high level in all of their games. That kind of makes sense.

Im off topic. Sure Phil is lucky... How come the Cincinnati Royals never won with two of the greatest players in the game Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas. How come the Laker's never won a championship with Jerry West and Elgin Baylor? How come the Lakers only won one championship with West, Baylor and Wilt (the greatest player to ever play the game) Chamberlain? How come the Baltimore Bullets never won a championship with Earl Monroe, Gus Johnson, and Fred Carter....(but the Knicks later won with Earl Monroe)? How come Cleveland never won with LeBron? How come Miami won't win this year with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh? Phil Jackson lucky? No...Once the you get the great players, the job gets tougher.....NOT easier.

And this is precisely where good coaching - which we have - needs to step in. We shot almost 70 percent on 2s in these two games, yet still missed 15 or so 3s each game. Make it easy and get out and regroup.

Im off topic. No you can talk Lakers...I think that we are supposed to get rid of Derek Fisher....not Steve Fisher. As for Phil, count how many rings MJ, Kobe, and Shaq won BEFORE he showed up. 0. They all had plenty of chances before he got there. Phil has proven to be able to manage such primadonna super stars and get them to the promised land.

Now, I figured out the ZONE offense. Watching the game tonight I noticed that Aztecs were running their man to man offense against a ZONE! Some Coaches in America will employ a man offense against ZONE for the sole purpose of screening the guards at the top of the ZONE to create a drive and kick to the wing.
Well, its a great strategy if you have a PG that can penetrate and has desire to kick/pass the ball to the wing shooter that should be open, as the defensive ZONE player cannot guard the PG and the WG. Interesting that Aztecs used a different ZONE offense against UCSB and it worked to perfection. I do not understand why Fisher did not use the same ZONE offense against IUPUI and USF that he used against UCSB.
Finally, when you look at the STATS, you will discover why Aztecs are struggling. There is no way that your PG should take 10 3 point shots and has only, 1 freaking assist for the entire game!
Fisher has created a monster with DJ by making him Captain, Team spokesperson and constantly stating that he is the team's most valuable player. Well, DJ is taking advantage of Fisher's generosity and Fisher refuses to come out state that his PG is the reason for his team's struggles!
I really thought that LaBradford Franklin was going to come in and put pressure on Fisher and DJ for playing time, but his debacle against Cal Poly has cost him dearly! I really wish Chase had the desire to run the PG position because at least he will pass the ball to his teammates and not dribble the shot clock down to 5 seconds and puke up a desperation 3 point shot!
Not to worry though because PG position will not be a problem because Xavier Thames is a prototype D1 College Basketball PG! Nevertheless, I am thrilled that the Aztecs won the game and they are 14-0 and the #7 Ranked Team in the Nation!
