miners22- When DJ is on, he can bang those 3's and would have been huge if half of his shots dropped. He is confident because he has the skills and has been clutch this season with few exceptions.

And this is precisely where good coaching - which we have - needs to step in. We shot almost 70 percent on 2s in these two games, yet still missed 15 or so 3s each game. Make it easy and get out and regroup. Fisher said he talked with the boys at half time about what they need to do go get better looks at the 3, but IUPUI was sending guys flying at anybody with the ball in 3 point range.. bull$#!+ - they had decent looks in both halves. He needs to put his foot down in these two games when you are dominating teams for 2s. He also needs to put his foot down on Leonard's black hole that is developing.

Lets not forget that this is the same IUPUI team that led Ohio St. by 8 in the second half. In Columbus. And that USF team we played last night: they were only down 1 point at halftime at Louisville, holding them to their lowest shooting percentage of the season. (I believe they also played that game with a short bench).
These teams aren't USD is all I'm saying.

aztec00,
I beg to differ. I know DJ can knock down a 3 point shot, but hell, when you are 2-10, you need to stop shooting! Not certain that you saw the game. I did.
Here's an example why Fisher needs to tell DJ to stop jacking 3 point shots and why DJ needs to watch some freaking film. Chase had the ball on the wing and was wide open for a 3. Did he jack a three? No! He passed the ball to Tim Shelton on the low block and Shelton scored. Next trip down the Court. Chase is open again on the left wing and he could have jacked a 3, but he did not. No, he passed the ball inside to Malcolm Thomas who scored. Next trip down Court. He passed the ball inside to Tim Shelton and he scored!
Check the freaking STATS! Chase had 5 assists and he is a SG! Tim Shelton may have played his best game of the year, as he was 3-3 from the field! Moreover, that is when San Diego State led by thirteen. When Fisher subbed out Chase and Tim, IUPUI cut the lead to six (6) within a minute! Why? Because DJ kept dribbling and dribbling until shot clock was down to 0, so he had no alternative but to shoot! This has been going on for the last two (2) years and if Fisher does not put a stop to this madness, Aztecs are going to have major problems going forward!
Lastly, why do you think Billy and Malcolm are taking jump shots? Why do you think Kawhi is holding onto the ball to get a shot? Why do you think Kawhi, Billy and Malcolm are not dominating on the Boards? I will tell you why. When your PG is taking all the freaking shots and they are not touching the ball, they are sending a message to DJ and Fisher that if we do not touch, then, put someone else in the game to get rebounds, defend and block shots! A PG number one priority is to keep his BIGS happy.
Right now, I do not believe that Billy, Malcolm, Kawhi, and Brian are HAPPY CAMPERS! No, Fisher has heaped so much praise on DJ, he would look foolish to come out and state that he is the Aztecs problem! Again, check the STATS. There is no way that DJ should have 1 ASSIST during the course of any basketball game!

Yea, DJ is the one that needs to stop shooting 3s, when most of his 3s are when the ofense stops not like Leonard who shoots 3s the first 15s of shot clocks.

Leonard at the elbow is devastating. What happened to the spacing, what happened to leonard's bounce passes?

There is no way that DJ should have 1 ASSIST during the course of any basketball game! So in your scenario Miners I have to ask you a question... It sounds like that DJ is not being a team player...or doesn't have the skill to be that type of team player. And it sounds like Billy, Carlwell, Malcom, and Kawhi are not happy with that and rebelling. I do not think that DJ is doing anything on purpose (coach is praising him and hoping that will help him become a better point guard). It is quite possible that DJ (as we have known for years) is a natural 2 guard and not a natural point guard and still struggling to be a true point. So who is the team player (willing to accept their roles)....And who isn't? If I am correct on what you are saying, it seems to me that Malcom, Billy, Carlwell, and Kawhi are not being the team players and not accepting their roles. DJ has improved greatly at point (but really isn't a point guard). He is the point guard on this team. He has accepted his role and can't do anything about Coach Fisher heaping praise on him. The other players need to accept that as part of the team...IF they are understanding their roles on this team. Why would they be mad at DJ? for Coach Fisher giving him the praise. You are either a team player or you aren't.

This is why I prefer Richie to D.J he would have at least tried to penetrate the zone

miner, made some really great points, DJ seemed very nervous to penetrate into the lane. And dribbles way to much. Our offense looks like puke when he stands out there and dribbles till there is 5 secs on the clock and jacks up a 3. DJ has to be a 3rd option to shoot the 3 not the first.

Fisher needs to put his team in better situations such as calling timeouts and diagraming plays not letting them continue to fire up 3s and put them in mentally tough times. A little too much Phil Jackson sometimes Then, it wouldn't be Motion Offense. Would you rather see slow down - set plays - pass 13 times every possession?

A little too much Phil Jackson sometimes Not quite sure I understand. This seems to be a common complaint from some fans. A little too much Phil Jackson? You mean the most successful NBA coach ever? Don't take it personal Monty, I just wanted to make a point... As with Phil Jackson in the NBA, Steve Fisher is one of the most successful college basketball coaches ever. I don't get the arguments some have with Fisher (or Jackson)....He is 14-0 this year. Isn't that the point??? To win games? Obviously he is referring to the "sit back and let the team figure it out on it's own" mentality that PJ uses. I don't see any problem with his criticism, obviously it's great to win and be undefeated but we haven't won the last two games in particularly pretty fashion. Fisher could have been more involved during the game, these are college kids that need guidance, not professionals. I'm happy with Fisher overall, obviously he has brought more success to this program than it has ever had... but there is always room to improve.

Gotta love message boards. Reading them is like watching Monty Python episodes. Comedy of the absurd.
I'll try to make it simple here:
Are there some things the coaches and players could have done differently to improve the performance in some of the games thus far? Yes, of course.
However, if Dean Smith, Bobby Knight, John Wooden and Coach K were all co-coahces of this year's Aztecs team, they would not have a better record or higher ranking. Good night to you all and happy holidays.

Phil Jackson owes his f'ing life and every part of it to three of the best basketball players in history. it amazes me that people don't see he's the luckiest coach in nba history to have kobe, mj, and shaq. Im off topic. the guy that won 55 games with Scottie Pippen and Toni Kukoc? and then got hosed out of the playoffs by the one of the worst calls in NBA history?

The team is 15-0, suffered through the flu, played at Gonzaga, played in 2 tournaments with back to back games, faced the zone in almost every game. We're # 7 in the nation. You're right, get rid of Fisher.
How lame is this thread?
