McKinney looks pretty short in person, but there was one play where he almost had a put back dunk on a dead ball (from a foul). He must have some serious hops, does anyone know if he dunks pregame?

UCSD is predicted to finish 3rd in the Big West. There team was alot better last year. I watched them live last year about 4 times, USD 2 times, and SWC twice. If UCSD come in 3rd place in there conference, the their conference will not be very good. Completely disagree… they have experience and are a good team that played their “Super Bowl”

here's a nightmare thought for the rest of the season: how much money will Byrd be getting from duke or _______________________________9fill in the blank). next season? enjoy his play while we can. Not happening…

The matchup zone UCSD ran seemed to really throw guys off… guessing that wasn’t something the Aztecs expected seeing.
Much like what’s been said already, we’re really inexperienced down low especially if Heide is limited for whatever reason. Gwath and Compton both looked lost at times but there were flashes I really liked. Gwath was moving his feet on the perimeter much like big Nate and Compton’s ability to finish down low is already elite.
Dutch ended up going small ball to finish the game out which is understandable since all the experience is on our guard side of the ball. Big guys are going to have to develop quick with the schedule we have coming up.

Sorry off topic but felt this place would have the answer.
What's up with the Women's basketball coaches contract? did she get another extension?
---Asking for a friend.
(now, get back on topic)

Boyd made plays down the stretch. He made a sweet crossover to get to the rim to score. That play had me jump off the couch! He also had a nice dime for a dunk. Dude gots true play making skills. And a 3 point shot. Boyd is a true point guard and our best basketball player on the team. You can see he wants the ball and doesn't get scared with a little man to man press. Would have benefited from him last year with him on the team. UCSD put there best defender on the team on him. Butler is a combo guard. He struggles with bringing up the ball with a little pressure , couldn't make his 3s on a consistent basis, and his free throw shooting was awful last year. I know he is a legend at SDSU but last year that fame got to his head. A change a scenery probably will benefit him. As to Micah Perish, he will avg 14 ppg in the big ten. Mark it. The OSU offense has more structure andwill benefit him. From the 3 transfers he will be missed the most. Boyd is looking to feed his players first and knows he can turn it up offensively if he has to carry the load. The interesting thing we have going now is BJ Davis has improve and know we have two PG. Another thing to note is we started with a five out offense and when Nick Boyd would kick out the ball our bigs were not there to receive the ball which cause a few turnover. McKinney did the same thing. So if turnovers were to be scored like baseball errors, his bigs and Mckenny would be the blame. It got so bad that Dutcher went back to his 1990 offense because him and Dave is all they know. Respectfully, regardless of who was guarding who, I'm going with the dude who was the best player on both ends of the floor, Byrd: 20 pts on 7/12 shooting, 4/8 from 3; 8 boards; 5 steals; 4 blocks; 3 assists. (all in two less minutes)

I have always liked those high energy guys and Byrd is one of those. Nice thing is that he has a ton of talent on top of that. Compton is impressive. I've read that he is still learning the defense but he is going to be a beast inside. JCJ seemed to improve as the game progressed. Goon needs to slow down on offense. Boyd will be the team's leader this year and I think Davis is going to be solid. Played two true freshman a lot last night.
I do think this team is going to be better offensively than last year but it will take time. I'm guessing we have spent more practice time on defense rather than offense. We also have multiple shot players on this team which is nice. You could see that got into the UCSD players' heads a bit.

Yeah, remember what a headache that was last year? Butler and Trammel were turnover machines. No I don't remember. Butler averaged 1.4 TOs per game last year, and Trammel averaged 1.2. Boyd had 4 turnovers last night in 11 minutes. He needs to clean that up. We're talking about when we're confronted with the full court press when the games are on the line. I think Boyd and BJ Davis are the best ballhandlers and should be paired in those instances. I even question Byrd doing it since he's such a tall guard. JMO

Nah he just out of shape. Yeah no he looked tired too a lot of the game, hands on his knees. Hilarious quote of the day: I was listening to the post-game show while sitting in traffic on Montezuma, and Jon Schaeffer asks Dutcher the status of Gwath. Dutcher replies something like: "Our trainer told me Gwath had a muscle cramp in his thigh, which surprised me because I didn't know Gwath had any muscles to cramp."

BTW, Gwath was an absolute menace in the paint for the first 10 minutes or so.
He's definitely raw and is going to get shoved around under the basket until he manages to put on another 20 to 30 lbs. of muscle.
Also, he's not nearly the force I thought he'd be on offense. He can shoot better than Mensah and has better touch around the rim, but he just can't seem to outmaneuver or get position on his smaller defenders. Likewise, he doesn't appear to be a great rebounder.
But shot blocking? Wow. He had three blocks in the first half last night and altered another four or five shots that he couldn't get a hand on.
If he can get his stamina up and play 20 to 30 minutes a game, I could see him averaging 5 to 6 blocked shots per game, which would be bonkers.

Heide has lead hands and poor footwork. Depth piece at best. He didn’t improve at all from last season. That's a shame because Dutch put a lot of time and energy into recruiting him.

I thought we played fine for the first game. Byrd was excellent, and Boyd played well. Our defense was pretty good overall. It was a weird matchup, with UCSD playing zone primarily.
I have no idea what to make of Heide. He does nothing out there. He still doesn’t even engage in the offense; it’s almost like playing with four. I figured he did this last year, given all the upperclassmen, but it was even worse in this game. I think his role is exclusively as a body to put out there to rest others and hope he can grab a couple of boards.

I know it's waaaay too early to worry about metrics but KenPom had us @ #50 and favored by 12 over UCSD. We win by five and drop to #57. Creighton was @ #10 and favored by 28 at home and "only" won by 13 and dropped to #13. Does anybody know if there's a limit as to how many points you can win by over what you're favored and it no longer makes a difference? Like you're favored by 15 and you win by 40. At what point does it no longer help your metrics? It's early season. There's not enough data points yet. The wild swings will level by Conference time.

Guys take it easy on Heide, he is a sophomore, and we are literally one game into the season. Byrd isn't gonna go 20/10/10 or whatever every game, and Heide will be fine.

Halfway through the 1st half, Heide made a lazy cross-court pass that led to a layup which missed with Heide trying to chase him down. Another Triton got the rebound over Heide, put it in and got fouled by Heide. Dutcher stomped his foot and he didn't see the floor much after that. He's going to have to step it up and go harder with less trepidation if he expects to get much playing time. There is a lot of size he has to outplay and Dutcher may go to more 3-4 guard lineups.

Too many silly turnovers that have nothing to do with a new lineup or other gelling issues. Guys catching passes out of bounds, senior guards dribbling out of bounds and a ton of careless, telegraphed passing
That needs to be cleaned up ASAP.
The team looks deep in the back court, and not so good in the front court on offense. Rebounding might be an issue as they barely beat a much smaller and less athletic team on the boards.
Byrd is gonna remind us of Jamaal Franklin all season. Dude has MWC POY potential
