USC beating Idaho St at home 66-65 with 3 minutes left. U$C won 75-69 but dropped in KP from #43 to #57. Hope that weasel Musselman gets his a$$ handed to him all year long in the B1G.

Guys take it easy on Heide, he is a sophomore, and we are literally one game into the season. Byrd isn't gonna go 20/10/10 or whatever every game, and Heide will be fine. Define “fine” in this context? If “fine” is 12 minutes with two points and three rebounds then yes, I agree that he’ll be “fine.” He’ll also likely have some games where he eclipses those numbers. My concern isn’t based on the statistical results of a single opening night game. I’ve been under the impression that our staff thinks Heide would eventually be an offensive contributor. Could this happen, sure, I suppose, but it doesn’t look likely based on watching him play. He doesn’t even engage within the offense. When he does get a post touch, which is rare, it looks like he’s in a race to get rid of the ball as quickly as humanly possible. Same for when he handles the ball at the top of the key. He either has zero confidence or doesn’t have an adequate offensive skill set to be effective in high level D1 basketball. When players breakout, typically, you see flashes before they arrive. I don’t see flashes with Heide. Maybe he just needs more time. I want him to succeed badly, seems like a great kid and he works hard.

Yani didn't have great stats at Vandy but Dutch saw his potential and brought him in and he thrived here. So, be patient with Heide's development, I think most will be pleased by the end of the season. Unless your are a super athletic big, they take longer to develop at D1 level compared to smaller guards.

Here are his freshman season highlights. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TZyRIYFMDUIf your expectation is that he is going to be an offensive force this year, then yes, you will likely be disappointed. But he can play, will contribute this year and continue to get better. But keep in mind, we have two freshman that are going to push him hard for playing time.

But in those 8 minutes of highlights he only has two baskets outside the under-the-basket circle and both of those are little hook shoots from about 5 feet away. He did have more offensive than defensive rebounds and he's very aware of pick-and-roll possibilities. I think Byrd and Boyd can set him up well in those situations. He's a hard worker who seems to be popular with his teammates. His parents were both D1 Centers at Oregon State. He's got a lot of pluses. I think he just needs to say f**k it and go hard at it without worrying about messing up.

They can be afraid to make mistakes and get the wrath of the Dutch oven. Afraid to make mistakes because they might get pulled. You are on to something about playing tentative and be slow to do things on the court. I think the best players just play and react, utilize their basketball instincts and what got them this far. You have to be comfortable enough to not think on the court and just react/play. I think that is when the lightbulb goes on and kids like Heide get going. They just gotta get past the worrying about making a mistake and getting pulled, and just playing and having fun. Don't think and just react!

Ironic that he’s trying not to mess up and this leads to him to being ineffective, and pulled anyway. IMO he lacks confidence for some reason, might be too analytical, I’m sure he’s a different player in practice, much better than what we see. I hope he’s not one of the “all star in practice” players, but pressure causes them to play worse in games. Wishing the best for him. Go Aztecs

No I don't remember. Butler averaged 1.4 TOs per game last year, and Trammel averaged 1.2. Boyd had 4 turnovers last night in 11 minutes. He needs to clean that up. Boyd played 33 min not 11. This may be controversial but Butler was over rated on defense imo, watch the first 5 mins of the MW tourney finals vs NM, he got taken off the dribble by Dent over and over. This happened all season as opposing PGs seemed to penetrate at will, coming in 5th in MW said it all. I like this years team and think Boyd is a huge improvement over last year. He’s been in a boot till recently, incredible that he can go out and take over the game after not practicing while injured. He’s going to be special this year.

In an unrelated but related game, New Mexico just beat #22 UCLA at Vegas 72-64. UCLA was favored by 4.5. Lobos had 24(!) TOs and 28 fouls and still won because UCLA had 21 TOs and 24 fouls while shooting 21.7% from 3.
The New Mexico fans will be insufferable now but it will be that much better for the MWC and also for us when we beat them.

Based off that one game, and recognizing everyone's small sample sizes, Miles Byrd is at the moment the top ranked player on Kenpom. If that remains throughout the season, I would be pleased.

Where is that on KenPom please? Click on our team page, and scroll down to "player stats" you will see he has a "1" next to his name in a box. Click on that box and it takes you to the "Player of the year" list kenpom.com/kpoy.php
