Nevarez is taking a lot of criticism on the recent realignment dominoes to fall. Frankly, a lot of it is unfounded. She was competing against Teresa Gould of the P2 in assembling the next version of Western Football and she had very few cards to play.
Nevarez as commissioner has to look out for the interests of members not just the top members. Her only path was to protect the current members and bring WSU and OSU into the fold. So she and the conference entered into a scheduling agreement with the PAC2 that provided the PAC 2 games at a $14M price tag and obtained additional penalties if they poached the MW.
In hindsight people are saying that they should not have entered into the agreement, but was the other option? Provide no escape hatch and force the P2 to join or not? That is not how you induce someone into your camp and would have resulted in the PAC going with this plan earlier and not latter. It would have resulted in $54M less dollars.
Additionally, she needed to reach out to media partners and see what a PAC/MW14 would garner in the marketplace. That media deal was always going to be less per capita than the PAC2 +6 or +8 deal could garner by dropping deadweight. So in addition to understanding the media component, she would need to convince MW membership that they should take in less media revenue, less bowl revenue, and less ncaa tourney money so that the larger universities could receive shares closer to their value. And then convince them that if they don't spend x amount per year, they could be jettisoned from the conference.
That is a very tough road especially considering the PAC has a $250M war chest and the ability to just go TV and just them show them random 8,9, and 10 team configurations to TV and ask for the estimated value.
Nevarez will take the heat, but she had an impossible job.

— Commissioner Gloria Nevarez was outmaneuvered, badly.
She made the same mistake so many commissioners have made over the years, including the Pac-12’s Larry Scott (her former boss) and George Kliavkoff.
Instead of catering to the schools coveted by the Pac-12 — to the flight risks — Nevarez crafted a strategy to suit the bottom-tier schools in her conference.
While she took a hardline stance with the Pac-12 on extending the football scheduling partnership, thinking the leverage was with the Mountain West, San Diego State and Boise State plotted their escape route with Colorado State and Fresno State in tow.
Or as we wrote last week:
“The Hotline does not believe the Aztecs and Broncos have any interest in signing up for another media rights cycle with the same collection of Mountain West schools …
“A conference consisting of Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, UNLV, Air Force and at least one more school — but no more than three — would generate more media value than the Mountain West if the current collection of schools signed a new deal together.”
The endgame was crystal clear. Only the timing was unknown.
And in the aftermath, the Mountain West is littered with ash and ruin.

It is why they are catered. Her only hope was to convince the USU, WYO's, etc to take less to keep the conference together. that is tough to accomplish. it was fait accompli.

Gloria overplayed her hand on either a power trip or to appease the front range. She should have played nice with sdsu after the pac collapsing debacle. Instead she went on a power trip with payment to return and then the 20 game conference schedule. She should have looked at how the WCC has kept Gonzaga. Give the NCAAT credit after first round to earning school. Etc
Additionally, she shouldn’t have played hard ball with pac 2. Scheduling contact called for $9m payment for next year and she demanded $14m thinking she had leverage.

Play stupid games win stupid prizes I know SDSU likes Gloria… they have nothing against her… her hands were tied… there are six schools that the other six schools didn’t want around anymore and have little to no media value… but you can’t win a vote if they vote as a block… which they did… The Little 6 are the ones that failed miserably… they should have known their value and what would happen if they pushed for the 20 game schedule, etc. In short order AFA and UNLV will leave the L6 and then they can count their cash… maybe they get $100m or so… but in a year their new tv deal will be at the same level as CUSA… I hope they invest that $100m and create an annuity… 😁

The MW has been successful for 12 years bullying State and others, it was a tough sell to the bottom that they could not continue doing what they are doing. Read Ziegler's article, she presented a Gonzaga approach to membership and they passed. The blame is on the Presidents of Nevada, SJSU, WYO, Hawaii, UNM, and USU. They should have made allowances, but instead they played hardball.

She'll be left with: San Jose State Nevada Wyoming Utah state New Mexico Hawaii Yikes! So, does the MWC expand (adding 2, 4 to 6 schools) or contract into a combination of the AAC & CUSA or drop to the FCS Big Sky? Time will tell. Good luck Gloria.

USU is hoping to be a travel partner with AFA… assuming they go to the AAC… the part that is really bad… even if they wanted to add UTEP or NM State… what do they have to offer… please come to the MWC, we don’t have a media deal and if we get one it is likely to be about what you are getting in CUSA/Sunbelt Why would the Dakotas or Montana schools make the move… Up front $5m just to make the move and then they get in a conference that pays $1m per year and they add AD costs… they would be at a $5m to $10m annual deficit by making the move… Ugly

The way Nevarez allowed an internal message from SDSU to the conference get "leaked", and then her decision to make it very public, then interpret the question in a memo into a way to try and embarrass SDSU and then hold a vote to "allow us" back in makes me have zero empathy or sympathy for her, and frankly is a large reason I won't care if any org under her charge goes kaput.

I can see something like this happening:
Air Force, New Mexico, Utah State go to the AAC
San Jose State, Nevada, Hawaii, Wyoming go to C-USA
MWC goes away

Like Hair she can only do what the Presidents of the schools want to do - very little power
now would guess that the MW tries to at least keep what it can together to get the Money it can ?
not sure if schools they might be looking at want to venture into the MW ?

Bring back Pacifc,Long Beach State, UCSB and Fullerton State and reform the PCAA! Don't forget Los Angeles State. They won the 1964 Small College Championship beating us 7-0 along the way. It was John Madden's first year as defensive coordinator. What times those were.
