You're right. We also need to eliminate the cave men (Cavers) of San Diego High School. Class of '87 ASB Commissioner of Activities here...and I'll give you my Caver Cudgel when you pry it out of my cold, dead hands! As Hoover Cardinal Class of '63 I just might take you up on that.

Don't laugh but I lettered in badminton - you guys had an ungodly player in '87, #1 in the state. Vietnamese player, I forget his name.

Again, put me in charge and I will rename us the San Diego State Conquistadores. They kicked the Aztec nation's ass and maybe that will get us into a power conference.

While there are clearly offensive Native America mascot names out there, it seems like the politicians are just taking a broad brush to the issue to do away with everything that they deem offensive. Much of the objections of Native Americans is not so much the use of names, as it is the actions portrayed - i.e. tomahawk chop, et al. Interestingly, many tribes (if those in Sacramento took the time to ask) really don't object to the use of their name. I went to Arcadia H.S. and we were the Apaches. When these issues first started to emerge years ago, leaders from AHS reached out to the Apache nation. The response was that they were honored to be Arcadia's mascot as long as it was treated respectfully. Same goes for the Utes in Utah and the Seminoles in Florida. How refreshing would it be to actually have dialog with Native Americans who are assumed to be offended, according to those politicians' preconceived notions. Educators could turn it into an opportunity for learning and better understanding of Native American culture and reduce racism. Sounds like work, so I guess it's easier for today's "cancel culture" to just sweep it all away.

Wow! The Democrats took Native American land without ratifying any of the Treaties in California, and now they want to completely cancel Native American names. Sham on them!

I think we may have had the worst football coach in the county during my time there. we won 3 games my first 2 years are were only slightly better my Senior year. That's why some of my buddies and I started going to the Aztec games the year Coryell started. Of course I never missed a Hoover game back then either.
Fortunately we had the best basketball coach in the county. Three SDCIF championships each over my 3 years there.

Sorry, but how the hell are we not supposed to laugh at that!?!? Heheh. The tennis coach at the time was a complete prick which is why I went badminton instead. Had never played badminton before but thankfully my tennis/racquetball skills translated nicely.

The tomahawk chop (and whatever the Reeeehbuuuls call their asinine thing) is the most cringe fan gimmick in sports so I get wanting to do away with that one. And Chief Wahoo was straight out of WW2 Jap/Jew (terms of the era) caricature mold, so no loss there. Same with the obvious Redskins. But other than those, the "dialog with Native Americans who are assumed to be offended" plan seems like a no brainer.

State, counties and cities have been apologizing for last 10 years.

I agree, but if they're going to eliminate Aztecs then they should also eliminate all national and cultural and racial groups such as Trojans, Spartans, Vikings, Irish, etc. I guess no more Helix Highlanders...... Or Grossmont Foothillers

State, counties and cities have been apologizing for last 10 years. This has been going on nationally for 200+ years and is a bi-partisan issue. Blaming it just on the Democrats is ludicrous.

Agreed, I consider that part of tomahawk chop as one always accompanies the other. SO cringe.

I understand it is hard for some to look deeper into what can be set up as a distraction from the reality of what the motivation is behind some events. The sad truth is there seems to always be capital gain involved.
