What a joke this has all become from wanna-be-politicians looking for their 15 minutes of fame, I think there are much better things to focus on then names of sports teams that are in no way offensive or degrading in any way.

Great... dropping Aztecs would cost the University how much to rebrand? Couple million... more...?

Of course the Aztecs aren't Native Americans, but that fact wouldn't stop politicians from trying to curry favor from voting blocks.
In any event, I've been thinking that due to the current state of NIL if we have to abandon the Aztec name we should change it to the DJ's or Disk Jockeys. Remember the payola scandels from the 1950s and 1960s. The new fight song could be "Money" from Cabaret.

CBS 8 says it will impact schools with the nickname Aztecs, but the text just says Native American. This bill is directing K-12 and not Higher Education. Though the writing is on the wall. This Bill Started out eliminating "Redskins" from use and now derogatory Native American terms. Which they openly define as, includes, but is not necessarily limited to, Apaches, Big Reds, Braves, Chiefs, Chieftains, Chippewa, Comanches, Indians, Savages, Squaw, and Tribe. Who will be the arbiter of what is and is not a derogatory Native American terms. For obvious reasons, there is a carve out. (1) All public schools, except for a school operated by an Indian tribe or a tribal organization, are prohibited from using the term Redskins for school or athletic team names, mascots, or nicknames. (2) Commencing July 1, 2026, all public schools, except for a school operated by an Indian tribe or a tribal organization, are prohibited from using any derogatory Native American term for school or athletic team names, mascots, or nicknames. Tribes can continue to use these terms, because it's crazy to say that Chippewa or Kumeyaay is a derogatory Native American term. What I find interesting is that Tribal Schools are seemingly included. If a Tribe is running a school, I would have thought it would have been independent of the State and subject to Tribal and Federal Oversight. I say we embrace our heritage and go with Wampus Cats.

True. I guess it is how it is being defined in this case. However, the Aztecs are Native Americans. Native Americans aren't just those from the United States region. Canada all the way down to South America are the Americas. And all indigenous people from those regions are Native Americans. That's a fact. Now, whether this case is just going after the Indigenous names that have residence in what is now the United States, I am not sure.

It was already amended 2 months ago to exclude SDSU. Thanks. Didn't catch that. So why would Alvarez and the State Legislature carve out higher education?

How can these power crazed politicians claim jurisdiction over a long extinct civilization OUTSIDE THE BORDERS OF THE UNITED STATES?
Surely there are more pressing matters these idiots can be dealing with.

I agree, but if they're going to eliminate Aztecs then they should also eliminate all national and cultural and racial groups such as Trojans, Spartans, Vikings, Irish, etc.

I work closely with the Kumeyaay community and not one person ever said that there were offended by the Aztec name. In fact, they appreciated the name being used to keep the traditions alive.

I'll support eliminating the Aztec moniker from SDSU when a real life group of Aztecs come forward and complain.

You're right. We also need to eliminate the cave men (Cavers) of San Diego High School.
