Xander could not have gotten off to a better start in this major.
7 birdies and no bogeys thru 13 holes this morning, with a current three shot lead.

Xander shoots 62!
The lowest score in any round in all 4 Majors is 62. There have been four of them in history. Xander now has two of them. Both of his were in the 1st Round, which goes along with so many of his fast starts.
Hope this is the week he finishes strong and breaks through to win a major. But there are a bunch of studs already close behind him: Finau, Rory, Cam Smith, Spieth and Homa are presently @ -3 or better and half the field hasn't even teed off yet.

Wonderful round of golf for X. Incredible up and down around the greens, and clutch putting. Tomorrow is key; he has tended to falter in rounds 2 in the majors, so if he hangs tough tomorrow, watch out. Come on X, Aztecland is pulling for you!

He falters? I thought the narrative is he gets unlucky?

He falters? I thought the narrative is he gets unlucky? If Rory shoots a 59 and Xander shoots a 67…is it more about Rory or Xander?… You seems to believe that it’s Xander’s fault that Rory / Scottie / Viktor (or anyone else) plays out of their minds…

Is it all those other golfers fault Xander shot a 62? Or were they unlucky? Or did they falter today?

Everyone keeps referring to Sunday about it being more about Rory tearing it up than Xander not playing as well. It's not that simple.
Sunday was like match play because they were so far ahead of everyone else. When they finished the 11th hole, Rory was just one shot ahead of Xander.
But then Xander bogeyed #12 and #13 while Rory got a par and birdie. Suddenly Rory was 4 shots ahead with 5 holes to play. When Xander missed a short putt on 16 for another bogey, it was all over. He had 3 bogeys in 5 holes on the back 9. That's not Rory beating him, that's also Xander losing.
Hope this week ends differently although there are so many very good golfers within 6-7 shots of him with three rounds still to play.

Is it possible to simply enjoy Xander’s play than to over analyze his game? He is a great player and we should just enjoy the moment. This could be the majors breakthrough that we’ve all been anticipating. I only mentioned his Rounds 2 faltering as a matter of statistical reality, not that he will falter today. I’m expecting him to play well. If Rory shoots 61 and Xander shoots 68, well, that’s golf.
Go X!

A little off the topic, but this is nuts... Scottie Scheffler arrested before PGA Championship Round 2 www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40162983/scottie-scheffler-detained-police-prior-start-pga-championshipNote to self... don't jump your car onto a median to drive around police and emergency responders. And then don't keep driving when directed to stop by a police officer. And definitely don't keep driving after the officer jumps onto your car. If somone NOT named Scottie Scheffler had done that, there's no way they would have been released so quickly after being charged with felony assault of a police officer. Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.

A lot of commotion at Valhalla this morning as Scottie Scheffler, whom many can't distinguish between Schauffele, was arrested on felony second-degree assault of a police officer, for trying to drive around a police barricade during their investigation of a fatal car-pedestrian accident. Schaffele was handcuffed, taken to a Louisville, KY, police station, booked and released about an hour before his 10 a.m., ET, tee time. Crazy. Now watch him go out and fire a 7 or 8 under par.
Meanwhile, the betting odds for the tournament fluctuated wildly. Xander remains the favorite at +250 with Rory at +550. Scheffler began the morning at +550, went up to +900 when everyone saw a booking photo of him in an orange jumpsuit, then improved all the way to +450 when he finally made it to the course.
We'll see how this all plays out. Hopefully, Xander can keep focused and continue to stay hot.

The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.According to reports of reporter Jeff Darlington, who was driving right behind Scheffler, an officer grabbed the door handle of Scheffler's car as Scheffler proceeded to drive an additional 10 yards. Probably a more than a stretch to charge him with second-degree assault of a police officer. The scene was chaotic and drivers were being given conflicting directions by both tournament officials and local police. I'm sure Scheffler was released after his attorneys showed up with video and witness evidence showing what a clown-show overreaction this was by Kentucky cops. x.com/KevinNegandhi/status/1791436361980899774

Sure, I agree that felony assault is a bit much. And totally... I'm sure the PGA had a flotilla of personnel following the police car to the station to try and get their star player released as quickly as possible.
But I very much object to the ESPN report's closing comments... "the police officers at that point did not understand that Scottie Scheffler was a golfer in the tournament, or of course that he is the #1 player in the world". We as a citizenry should WANT police officers to do their job fully without bias and without regard to the identity of someone breaking the law. No bias against people of color, etc... and no bias in favor of rich / celebrity / sports or Hollywood figures etc. Maybe it is my OWN bias, but I hear the tone of the reporter's voice as expressing pretty clearly an expectation that Scheffler should have been given special treatment by police because of who he is.
As a thought experiment... what if it had been a caddy, or golf course employee who had done the exact same thing as Scheffler? Would that person have been released from police custody or still sitting in a local holding cell?

He was in a PGA marked vehicle and they had been given special instructions to proceed around the scene and head to the course. To me it sounds like he was just following the instructions he was told by the PGA (and a different officer who told him to proceed) and some rent a cop make up a bunch of charges to justify his overreaction.

Agreed, what he does for a living or his golf ranking should not matter one iota whether he is guilty or is not guilty.
