Sure, I agree that felony assault is a bit much. And totally... I'm sure the PGA had a flotilla of personnel following the police car to the station to try and get their star player released as quickly as possible. But I very much object to the ESPN report's closing comments... "the police officers at that point did not understand that Scottie Scheffler was a golfer in the tournament, or of course that he is the #1 player in the world". We as a citizenry should WANT police officers to do their job fully without bias and without regard to the identity of someone breaking the law. No bias against people of color, etc... and no bias in favor of rich / celebrity / sports or Hollywood figures etc. Maybe it is my OWN bias, but I hear the tone of the reporter's voice as expressing pretty clearly an expectation that Scheffler should have been given special treatment by police because of who he is. As a thought experiment... what if it had been a caddy, or golf course employee who had done the exact same thing as Scheffler? Would that person have been released from police custody or still sitting in a local holding cell? He was in a PGA marked vehicle and they had been given special instructions to proceed around the scene and head to the course. To me it sounds like he was just following the instructions he was told by the PGA (and a different officer who told him to proceed) and some rent a cop make up a bunch of charges to justify his overreaction. Was he also told to stop and pickup a POLICE OFFICER on the side of his car and to proceed down the road? Someone died at the site and I am sure things were hectic but at the end of the day as had been said many times over and over, if a cop is telling you something you should follow his/her basic directions and at no time should you be driving with a cop attached to your car.

Well he said he was told by a different officer to proceed ahead. I guess body cam footage will tell the whole story (unless it was conveniently turned off). And he didn’t “pick up the officer”. The officer literally jumped on the hood of his car. I don’t know about you but if a stranger in the dark jumped on the hood of my car I would be momentarily freaked out. He drove 10 yards, a fraction of a second in a car.

From info I have seen, it is stated "He attached himself to the side of his car after making contact with suspect and he was wearing a highly reflective Police uniform/jacket" Sure seems like someone was thinking their morning workout (couple minute delay) was more important then an active police investigation (doesn't matter if he knew all the details) as what was said before, Cop tells you something Follow the Direction. This whole thing is blown way out of proportion but still have to respect for law enforcement.

And of course Scheffler is going to make public comments that put his actions in the most benign context possible. Confusing situation or whatever, not trying to minimize the context... but pretty much ANYONE ELSE does the exact same thing, and they are still in custody... not making their precious PGA / ESPN tee time.

Not gonna lie. I saw this breaking news early this AM and thought Xander is going to win now! Joking of course, but Scottie is such a beast right now on the course. There are two sides to every story and somewhere in the middle is the truth. I think this has been blown way out of proportion.
Also, I would venture to guess if it was as bad as some would like to believe, Scottie would still be in custody. I think cooler heads prevailed and it was all agreed it would be best to release Scottie.

Oh boy..... lock this down now. You just went there, and I absolutely cringed at your psot. Completely unnecessary!

Update... www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40164654/officer-dragged-ground-trying-stop-scottie-scheffler-carThe report, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, said the officer, identified as Det. Gillis, was directing traffic at Shelbyville Road, near Gate 1 of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship. Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
The report said Gillis was standing in the middle of the westbound lanes when Scheffler's SUV pulled into the lanes to avoid backed-up traffic. The report said Gillis was wearing a full police uniform and a "high-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket."
Gillis stopped Scheffler's SUV and attempted to give instructions, according to the report.
"The subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground," the report said.
Gillis was transported to a hospital by emergency medical personnel for evaluation. The report said his uniform pants were also damaged beyond repair.

50% Scheffler’s PGA entitlement and 50% Barney Fife overreaction.

Xander better get his game together...his lack of driving and putting allowed Morikawa to shoot a 65 today to take over the lead...
...and as everyone on Aztec Mesa knows...it's all about Xander not being able to finish that allowed Morikawa to take over the lead (despite Xander not teeing off until CM was nearly finished with his round)

There are some red-hot scores coming out of Valhalla today. Fifteen guys so far have shot in the 60s, with 10 scores of 68 or better, along with Morikawa's 65.
And Scheffler appears no worse for the wear; he's at -5 after 17.

50% Scheffler’s PGA entitlement and 50% Barney Fife overreaction. If it was one of 15-35 other golfers I'd agree with you, but not Scheffler.

I read that Scheffler still drives the same vehicle he had in college. And the guy gets arrested, misses much of his normal practice routine, and goes out and shoots 5 under. I mean. Most would have had a hard time focusing after that.

For the detractors on this thread and I have to admit that I have been disappointed in Xander’s play on Sundays, not sure if you heard Xander vs. Rory head to head stats? Going into las Sunday when they were paired head to head Xander’s record was 16-16-2 when competing directly with Rory. Clearly Xander isn’t intimidated and can play with him or anyone. As much as we would like him to win more, golf is hard and you can play well and still get steam rolled just like Hoffman got in the Waste Management Phoenix Open this year. Nick Taylor birdied everything down the stretch and then beat Charley Hoffman in a playoff. Hoffman didn’t choke and neither did Schauffele last week. Hopefully this week is his time! Go Aztecs!

Unfortunately Xander couldn’t separate himself going into the weekend as he missed quite a few putts inside 15 feet- tons of big names within 5 shots
