Just couldn't sink a putt on the back-9 today. He could have easily been -14 or -15...

Just couldn't sink a putt on the back-9 today. He could have easily been -14 or -15... Yeah, have to make putts. A lot of good players close to him but I think Scheffler is the one to worry about. He got arrested, missed his normal warmup routine, and still shot 5 under. They guy is incredible and he has a demeanor that is so calm.

Xander probably better as a chaser.....
He's becoming increasingly painful to watch as a frontrunner!
Go Aztecs!

Just couldn't sink a putt on the back-9 today. He could have easily been -14 or -15... "Coulda" definitely I felt, while watching, it was more like "shoulda". That was his chance to really put his stamp on this tournament, get a several stroke lead from everyone. He missed a few by less than an inch... couldn't buy one. Now there are so many golfers within a few strokes of the lead, I just think he's not going to grab the bull by the horns in a major. Again. I hope I'm wrong but that's who he's been. ... and on cue, with 2 stroke lead he double bogeys, Morikawa birdies, Xander now back out of the lead. 🤦🏻♂️ Love the guy, but he's just not clutch when it counts most in majors. I hope he proves me wrong... but ... 😔

I'll just take another 62!! That should clinch it for him no matter who gets as hot as they want.

Birdied the last two holes to remain in the lead for the third straight day at a major. I know everyone wants him to close it out and win his first major but some of the comments about a fellow alum, ranked third in the world are headscratch worthy.

At least Xander doesn't run over people trying to get into the course.

We may have the worse fans in the world. So many of the post on here are so negative and critical of our athletes you would think they were great athletes instead of wannabes. Just stop Xander is one of the top ten golfers in the world do you all have any idea how good you have to be too be in that position?

Just stop Xander is one of the top ten golfers in the world do you all have any idea how good you have to be too be in that position? You're overreacting. Xander himself has said repeatedly that he is disappointed he has been in position to win several majors but hasn't. Pro golfers are judged by winning majors. It's like winning the Super Bowl, World Series... you're not truly a champion in golf unless you win majors. In fact, he hasn't won any tournament in 2 seasons. He's been ranked in the top 10 in the world for several years straight. He's currently ranked 3rd. He's been in position countless times in majors, but then shoots himself in the foot virtually every time. He's now the best golfer in the world to not win a major. This stuff starts to carry weight as an argument "against" him being truly considered a great - despite his world ranking and tens of millions of dollars he makes. You're acting like people on here are saying he sucks. No one is saying that. Everyone acknowledges he's very very good, and seemingly a really good guy as well. Everybody wants him to get off the schneid and win his first major. People commenting on his struggles getting over the hump aren't "bad" fans. It's the truth. Our fanbase isn't "the worst". Far from it. The people making critical comments at least follow him closely and are pulling hard for him to win. The majority of Aztec alums don't even know who he is and couldn't care less. Are those "better" alum fans?

Phil M. won his first of five majors at age 34, in his 13th year on tour. (He wasn't exactly a late bloomer, having won on tour as an amateur at age 20.) Xander is 30.
Xander just needs to keep hitting fairways, plus make a lot of putts today. It's going to be tough with so many players bunched at the top of the leaderboard, but maybe today is his day.

My perspective is that X overcame his double and was clutch to reclaim a share. I mean it’s a major championship and the guy has one bogie and one double after 54 holes. That’s championship golf. I hope today is the day and X sinks putts and etches himself a very special place in Aztec lore. Go X!

Just stop Xander is one of the top ten golfers in the world do you all have any idea how good you have to be too be in that position? I don't know if you're from San Diego or not. But I've lived and also spent time in the midwest and east coast. San Diego fans are the nicest and most complimentary ones I have EVER run into. A very small portion of Petco Park crowd has finally given a smattering of boos to Machado and Bogaerts for their terrible seasons so far, while they're making $25M to $30M a year. And that turns into shocked talk-radio discussions and newspaper/online articles here. That would have happened back in mid-April with half the crowd doing it in New York, Philadelphia, Boston or Chicago. San Diego fans love their teams but are "soft" compared to other places. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. Why can't people on this board distinguish between comments steeped in frustration that are still supportive and mean, nasty ones that have no basis in fact?

There are tons of golfers within striking distance entering day 4, this won't be an easy one to win. I think Xander will need to shoot a 65 or better to earn his first major.
