He's definitely better on defense than offense but his 6'2" height would not make it easy defensively against a whole lot of 6'3" to 6'7", very quick, very strong NBA guards. I don't see him as a 3&D role player unless he significantly improves his 3-point shot. I'm anxious to see where he ends up and what he contributes to whatever team he's on. The only good thing about all of this is that, assuming he ends up on a rich P5 team, whoever is announcing those widely viewed P5 games will regularly bring up SDSU in the Final Four and his shot. There isn't a 3&D opportunity in the league with his height. It's be an NBA PG or head overseas - meaning he needs to be almost perfect at running a PnR, create a shot if he needs to late in the clock, and he would need to be shooting 35%+ from the NBA 3 pt line. He's no Malachi Flynn in the P&R - and look at how long it took Malachi to actually get some decent minutes.

I am never buying his stoopid Nektar drink again! Ever since I started drinking it I have been missing everything from not paying bills on time, missing exits off the freeway, got punched by the wife for missing...oh never mind, etc.
Seriously, Lamont provided one of my greatest Aztec experiences in my lifetime. He can do no wrong in my book. I am incredibly grateful for everything he has done. Time to move on and challenge himself to a new experience. Sure, timing sucked, pops comments were potentially cringeworthy, etc. I will not blame anyone for doing what is best for their situation. I am not buying the whole "legacy" thing as we cannot take that away from him. He earned that!
Thank you Lamont for what you did and I wish you nothing but the best young man! Go get paid.

im waiting for the day we see a college player refuse to pay play because someone missed a NIL payment. FIFY
That brings up something I was thinking about yesterday regarding the effects of NIL payments to the players. I can see it having substantial negative effects on team unity. Players making less money might resent the players making more. Also, I can see a player more concerned with enhancing his stats than working to make the team better as a whole.
In the future would a player like Matt Bradley be content with sacrificing his offensive game to get better at playing defense? Would players be willing to pass up a good shot for another player to get a better shot knowing that more scoring might enhance their NIL payments?

Fisher's mantra said it best, "The team, the team, the team." It's not, "The team, the team, maybe that other team." Try telling you wife that you'd like to see if you have a chance with a younger woman and if it doesn't work out you'll be back. That won't work either. You're either in or you're out in my book. Not a good analogy...one's wife has his best interest in mind...and both literally have skin in the game...lastly...there are serious consequences of it not working out...in Butler, Keshad and Parrish's case...they fulfilled their committed obligation to "the team"...and are now free agents in their gifted bonus Covid year... their transfer to another school is no different than Wetzel transfering to us in his fifth year....I understand your point. But a traitor is a hero who decides to fight for the other side ... where the traitor to the other side who decides to fight for your side is branded a hero.

Lamont Butler is a fine young man. He did not make the rules we are living by. If he has the opportunity to make a lot more then he should take it. He may find that he actually has more value in San Diego than anywhere else at the end of the day. I'm sure he and Coach Dutcher talked just about every day and so Dutch is not surprised and may have told him to explore his opportunities. The fact he left open the possibility of coming back means that Dutcher told him he is still wanted here.

Exactly and Wetzell is nothing like Lamont transferring. Wetzell hardly ever played at Vandy. Lamont is a 4 year player that hit the biggest shot in school history. Yanni was looking for playing time and wanted to play for a winner. Lamont had everything you could ever want as a player except a $100,000 more than what he is making currently.

Have you looked into what our other Aztecs hoops stars are up to now? Not too many in the NBA. A few have got into coaching and at whatever level they are, it isn't going to be paying a lot of money. Lamont has the opportunity to get probably the biggest paycheck of his life. He absolutely should do it. Hopefully, he's also able to play overseas for a while, see other cultures, and get paid. AFL.

I could be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure Dutcher has said it's not absolute that he wouldn't take players back - it's on a case-by-case. He just said he'll be recruiting as if they're gone. I know it's a different situation, since they lost their coach, but at lease 3 Utah State Aggies have changed their minds and come back to Logan this month. But yeah, I'd say it's at least 95% that Butler will be playing elsewhere. Dutch isn’t waiting, they have received more than 20 calls from folks trying place their guy… in like 10 hours…

So many selfish takes in here. Lamont owes SDSU nothing, he did cost himself short term money by coming back last year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to maximize the $ you get, large majority of us would leave our current job for a double/triple raise elsewhere. This isn’t different. Lamont should be celebrated. This

Give me a break. Waiting 2 weeks. His Dads negative quotes. Many people take less money all the time to be happy. He was paid more than most to play a game. You don't throw your food at people and not expect a response. Blame it on DEI, CRT and wokeness.... Ut oh

I love Malachi, but he doesn’t have an elite trait, maybe BB IQ, but Lamont does have an elite talent, his defense will be top level as a rookie, can he build anything else?

Thanks for everything.

I highly doubt any of those guys except Magoon plays any significant role next season. You really think BJ Davis sits? From what I understand, Compton has the body of more mature player. We played Heide quite a bit as a freshman. 100% Davis ( edit), Gwath, and Compton will all see minutes off the bench

That may change if we don't get a transfer center.

New quotes in Zeigler’s article make it clear this was a decision solely based on money. Also sounded like his dad was sort of bitter that their family sacrificed financially last year for Butler to stay here. He traded a couple hundred thousand difference in pay for a year for his lasting legacy in SD. We all saw how fans turned on Keshad, it’s gonna happen for Butler too. Sucks all around. Butler is worse IMO. Keshad put his name in the portal immediately and committed to UofA. We all know Keshad's family struggled financially, the tragic situation with his brother. I was sad to see him go but happy for him and thought he handled it perfectly ... it was classy. I had no issue rooting hard for him and UofA this one season. Butler feels like he's kind of hanging us out to dry a little. Could've and should've put his name in the portal weeks ago. Then his dad's comments sound bitter and negative ... essentially toward this program. That's disappointing on several levels ... but maybe the most as when I met Lamont's dad and chatted several times, he is a man of faith and wears it strongly in every sentence he speaks. This feels the opposite of that. That is probably personality the most disappointing to me ... not that anyone cares what I think. I wonder if it took Lamont longer to declare, because he had to be talked into it. I don't know, but maybe he wanted to stay, but eventually gave in.

I am tickled to see Davis get his chance to show why he was brought here. The little I have seen has certainly whet my appetite to see more. That's where I'm at. He can really get into the lane with his quickness. I'm excited to see him get his "real" opportunity.

Let's not go there, black athletes make up the majority of NCAA basketball players and all players deserve equity from their own name, image, and likeness.

Do we all agree that Boyd slides over to the starting PG role, and we look for another shooter (Big SG/Wing) in addition to a post player? I understand the market sets the price. Here's how I see the current roster.- Post 5: Heide, Johsnon & Majak (+TRANSFER) - Power F 4: Saunders & Compton - Forward S/Wing 3: Waters & Gwath - Shooting G/Wing 2: Byrd & Degourville (+TRANSFER) - Point G 1: Boyd & Davis TOTAL: 11 player (+2 TRANSFERS)
