Sounds like if he doesn't like what the NBA scouts have to say he will return to school.

Does this change anything? Just means the coaching staff will have to wait until late May to find out if he's staying or going, right?

Do we bring guys in as if he’s leaving? The transfer portal will be rather bare by the time he decides to drop out of the draft (if he does). It’s hard to wait on that decision.

I'm sure Butler and Dutcher will have dialogue concerning where he's leaning, before the portal is bare. NBA ready? Doubtful. Overseas, yes. Depends on his situation.

And you know that how? A year later I would actually expect him to be working harder towards his NBA goal, meaning attending more workouts. So a late May decision this year doesn’t seem less likely.

So a late May decision this year doesn’t seem less likely. Because he already got feedback last year when he went through the process originally. Now, he has one year of eligibility left and less leverage to work with. He'll get feedback and the team will act accordingly. It's one scholarship, not the end of the world.

I think that’s a good sign, he’s not done here yet! He’s not getting drafted in top 62!

Sounds like if he doesn't like what the NBA scouts have to say he will return to school. I’m sure he can make more NIL money than he can in the G League or overseas G League players are guaranteed a base salary of $40,500 throughout a 50-game regular season. There's potential for higher earnings through NIL opportunities at SDSU or elsewhere, it's crucial to acknowledge the necessity for Lamont refining skills, particularly in shooting the ball behind the arc, and at the line. Looking at the experiences of players like X Thames and Jeremy Hemsley, both of whom faced challenges in remaining in the G League or playing overseas, underscores the importance of shooting & skills development. On the other hand, Jordan Schakel's notable three-year tenure in the G League, coupled with his nearly 40% accuracy from beyond the arc, highlights the significance of consistent performance. Despite my utmost admiration for Lamont, it's essential to recognize the hard journey toward NBA success—it's no easy feat. But, I wish him all the luck and best wishes on whatever path he chooses.

Last year he didn’t drop out of the draft and return until May 29th. If it’s that long again we will miss out on pretty much all of the PG transfer targets. Last year and this year aren't the same. The portal window has been shortened this year. The move will give players 45 days, down from the original 60-day period, throughout the year to enter the portal. This may translate into faster commitments for players in the portal, the deadline to enter is May 1st. "May 1st enables coaches to understand their current rosters, provides stability for student-athletes remaining at the school as they prepare for summer basketball, and encourages student-athletes who intend to transfer to do so before final exams at their current schools and summer school application deadlines at most campuses," said Lynda Tealer, chair of the council and deputy athletics director at Florida. "Moving forward, we will continue to evaluate the impact of transfer windows on student-athletes, coaches and athletics programs."

Not liking his odds for the NBA, he withdrew last year coming off peak interest from "The Shot" and the Final Four run, but didn't make substantial improvements to his game this past season.
It'll either be UDFA/Summer/G-League, International, or returning to SDSU for the last season.

He reportedly shot 28% from three his freshmen year. Then after that year between the end and the beginning of his sophomore year he MADE 15,000 threes that summer. That wasn't attempts but makes. After a slow start in their last game he had 6 straight makes from three. I think Butler needs to get away from the outside voices from camps and NBA tryouts and just get reps. Gotta believe he could get some coaching from Kawhi's shooting coach that worked with him after SDSU. Then it is all up to him to put up shots. From May through September he has 150 days. That's 100 made threes a day for 15,000. It's doable if he wants it and what he needs.

would hope that Lamont and Dutcher have talked about what he is realistically hoping to do - Get another NBA evaluation that very likely will say that he needs to really work on his shooting in a variety of ways 3 point - regular FG and even FT - So would guess he is told they need to be considerably better
Lamont needs to do what is best for him and Dutcher needs to do what is best for SDSU
So Dutcher may need to ask Lamont when does he expect Lamont to complete his future considerations with his family . Does his choice to play next season in college mean he will stay at SDSU or Transfer .
As pointed out if Lamont does not declare his intensions about staying or transferring out of SDSU - it hogties Dutcher as other schools are going to say SDSU has a returning 4 year PG - so why would a player come to SDSU - recruiting is already a battle
Bottom line Lamont and Dutcher need to have a truthful conversation when Lamont gets back and Dutcher gets back from his Final 4 Coaches Luncheon meeting and other Coaches events at the Final 4 weekend
Lamont has been very loyal to SDSU and hope that continue as he chats with Dutcher in the coming week - do what is best for both of them - but do it soon - as the Portal gets going in earnest - as players are already making moves
In addition think it has been noted that Lamont's mother has said that an education is quite important and I do not know if it would be easier for Lamont to get that from SDSU or if he goes to another school - think he could get his degree by this summer and if they are thinking of grad school
So bottom line an honest discussion between Lamont and Dutcher would be welcome next week

I wouldn't count out BJ Davis. He was a 4* recruit and is a true PG. Although he only played a few minutes here and there, he at least got a feel for what he has to do next season while observing from the bench.
