Many of Wooden's teams were dominant. But I don't remember them averaging almost 30 point victory margins in the Tournament. Walton's '71-'72 team averaged a 30-pt. margin of victory during their 30-0 season. They averaged an 18-pt. margin of victory during the NCAA Tournament, but only "squeaked by" Florida St. by 5 pts., 81-76. I watched a lot of UCLA's games under Wooden. KTLA, channel 5 in Los Angeles would broadcast replays of UCLA starting shortly after their game was over. I'd get home from our game and watch the replay. I remember them being overwhelming, but didn't remember that margin of victory. Not surprised, just didn't remember it. Thanks for the information.

State could have beat any team in the field, except UCONN Crazy thing, is if they, win we would of lost to them the last 3 of their championships??? Woulda, coulda, shoulda won the first one, but alas.... 3 of their last 4 NCs. They also won the NC the year we lost to Arizona in the s16 (the X team). So every year we have made the s16, Uconn has won the NC and it looks like the trend is likely to continue. Uconn should be hoping for sdsu to have a s16 year 😀. I dislike UConn. I disliked Calhoun. I disliked the flop. I dislike they have beaten us 3 times in MM. I dislike Harley’s arrogance. I dislike UConn. Go Aztecs

State could have beat any team in the field, except UCONN I'd argue that Purdue would have given us a lickin', too. Edey would have his way inside, and there are enough shooters on that team that somebody would burn us on the perimeter. Beyond that, I think you're right, we're in every game. Maybe…

Let’s not be hasty and crown them just yet. I agree with everyone but the still have to finish it. Haven’t done the legwork but I certainly don’t remember the 1976 Indiana team winning like this.

The amazing thing about UConn compared to past teams who have repeated (assuming they do so) is that essentially they have a new team this year compared to last year.
All the other teams were basically the same guys coming back, UConn has inserted several new pieces and I think this year's team is even better than last year's team which is stunning.
One thing I give Hurley credit for is his guys seem to consistently play at or near their max level. That is hard to do so regularly and somehow they are able to do that. Guys like Spencer, Karaban, etc. seemingly have morphed into stars in their system.

In the tourney they were +13ppg '68 Bruins were +21PPG in the tournament, only 4 games then. The '90 Rebs were +19ppg in the tournament in their title run.

Well, they played poorly and won by 25 yesterday. They have three players that show up in the first round of mock drafts. LeDee isn't on many because of his age, which I think is stupid. How many years do BB players play with the same team. He would be ready to go as a 4 in the pros. Offensively, he is a ahead of Kawhi coming out of college and he plays sold defense as well.

I just looked at Basketball Sports Reference for UCLA. That team was insane. They scored over 100 points in their first 7 games, including 4 games of 110+. And this was against major teams from major conferences., not cannon fodder small schools. They scored over 100 pts. 11 times that season.

This IS a very good UConn team but let's not get carried away just yet--they did lose to Seton Hall by 15 & Creighton by 19. I don't remember any of the great UCLA Wooden teams losing like that to anybody. BTW, is it possible Hurley has a grudge against San Diego since his dad's St. Anthony's team lost to Steele Canyon in 2004 at the Holiday Prep Classic at Torrey Pines?

just curious. I noticed last night that Hurley is on the court a lot. Saw opposing players complaining about it. What is the rule against coaches on the court? I don't remember seeing a coach on the floor that much..

The Wooden UCLA teams with Alcindor and Walton were about this dominant it seemed..but not much else. Maybe the Indiana unbeaten team. Many of Wooden's teams were dominant. But I don't remember them averaging almost 30 point victory margins in the Tournament. No shot clock. No three pointers. No dunking (NCAA passed that rule after Lew Alcindor committed to UCLA.

I'd argue that Purdue would have given us a lickin', too. Edey would have his way inside, and there are enough shooters on that team that somebody would burn us on the perimeter. Beyond that, I think you're right, we're in every game. Well, let's not get crazy. I think this edition of the Aztecs would be in every game with the exception of UConn and/or Purdue. But that's quite a bit different than claiming we could beat any of the other teams left in the tournament. I'd contend that we'd be in every game just because we have a stout defense and do well in rock fights, cuz that's just how we roll. But being able to beat any of the other teams? Nah. Heck, we were in every one of our 11 losses except UConn and UNM, but we still lost because we didn't have the size/rebounding or the firepower/shooting to close those games. The same would've been true -- and likely the same result -- against all the other S16 teams. Duke, Clemson, Alabama, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa St., Duke, UNC? They'd have all clobbered SDSU. Not by 30 points. But probably by at least 5 to 15. Heck, even the much-improved Zags would've spanked us, I'm fairly certain. This team, which was clearly missing a piece or two compared to last year's squad, did well to reach its ceiling, which was probably always the S16. I'm more than good with that. It was a fun ride, and I can't wait until next year. Fear the Magoon. Well said.. 100 percent accurate. I could not have said it better myself

Most of those teams in bold WOULD be favored against us (though probably not Clemson, so I'll just ignore them), but absolutely we COULD have beaten any one of them. We'd be about 25%-45% against them, but thats still a COULD- see Yale v Auburn.

Minor point, but I believe the no dunk rule was instituted after Alcindor's freshman year. Not positive about that. One of my measurements of truly GOAT players is if the rules are changed so other teams can compete with that player. They widened the lane (used to be called the key because it was shaped like an old keyhole) to make the game tougher for Wilt Chamberlain for example.

I went to numerous Bruin games in the Alcindor era. In my opinion, best NCAA teams ever.

I don't remember seeing a coach on the floor that much.. What are you talking about? Rat Boy from Wyoming was always on the court. And then there was that dude from Utah who stuck his leg out and tripped (maybe Chase Tapley???) while he was taking a ball up the sideline along the Utah bench following a steal. Coaches on the court is a thing. Some refs police it better than others.
