We technically have 13 scholarship players who still have eligibility for next year. Senior Status 1. Lamont Butler - PG 2. Reese Waters - SG/SF 3. Micah Parrish - SG /SF 4. Cade Alger - PF Junior Status5. Myles Byrd - SG/SF 6. Elijah Saunders - PF 7. Demarshay Johnson - C Sophomore Status8. BJ Davis - PG 9. Miles Heide - C Freshman Status10. Magoon Gwath (RS) - C 11. Taj DeGourville - SG 12. Pharaoh Compton - PF 13. David Majak - C Demarshay Johnson does not belong at SDSU any longer, the 3 year experiment is overCade Alger has no place on this team next year. Reese Waters or Micah Parrish one or the other not both in same class (replacement needs 2+ years eligibility) Lamont Butler needs a new start somewhere, he has lost his mojo here on the Mesa and is mentally not right. This team needs a true PG over 6'2" and a BIG BODY center for next year with Byrd getting minutes at the 2/3 with Saunders and hopefully Waters

A couple comments. First, it is MILES for both Heide and Byrd. SAME spelling for both. I think Johnson improved his game enormously this season over last. He lost over 20 pounds and is in great shape. He has a great vertical leap and may be still better than an incoming freshman. He is not a polished shooter but I have seen lots of improvement. I honestly did not think he would be invited back after a rather poor freshman year. I will hold judgement on Waters because he hasn't been the same since the ankle injury. I highly doubt he would consider transferring again because three teams in three years is not desirable. I know how thrilled he was to be here rather than USC, but he just seems to be in a funk now. Waters back at 100% next year would be amazing. Parrish can be a game changer but I would not be upset if he chased NIL money, IF he is offered more than he gets here. He doesn't drive to the basket enough and jacks up way too many threes. Butler certainly has not had the season he, the coaching staff and the fans expected. Personally I would love to have him back though. No doubt he put a lot of pressure on himself and next year he could explode. He has no chance of being drafted and even if he played pro ball he probably would not be making much more than he gets here. (my guess)...He is a great team player and a humble man without an ego. He and Keshad were BOTH offered $$$$ but Lamont stayed here out of loyalty and hopefully will have one more senior night.

He has no game. He gets zero minutes and that alone tells how the coaching staff views him.

I do not know what shot you have seen this season that you thought showed improvement but I saw every shot he took in a game. All outside shots are worse than starting 5 on a mediocre AAU middle school team. 0 FT made but worse is none were close enough that they had any chance. The way he shoots from outside would allow any defender to close on him even if 6’ away. The shot is almost a granny shot but he has to make it worse so he places that excessive spin on it. A shot coming from that low is virtually impossible to get off in game play. I suspect his fouls per minute of play is highest on the team. I agree he has some physical skills but I have seen no indication that he will make good use of them. Do you see a scenario where he gets decent minutes next year. It would be in his best interest to transfer to a lower tier school where he can get some playing time based on those great physical attributes. Maybe a lower D1 school r a d2 school. It would be better for him. I am glad butler came back and even in his offensively challenged year he brings it every night on defense. However he did not come back for loyalty. He tested the waters and found sdsu presented him his best opportunity. He was not NBA ready. The shot was going to help his nil more here than anywhere else. This was his best option. It may be his best option again next year. Go Aztecs

There has been no improvement at all in Johnson’s shot. And given how awful his form is it’s hard to imagine how it hasn’t improved at all. Why did the coaches even recruit someone with the shot form of a 10 year old? I guess they thought they could coach that up, but that’s not the case apparently. I chuckle to myself every time I see him out there shooting in warm ups. It’s just so bad that it makes no sense that he’s made no effort to change it. You think he would want to change it just based on pure embarrassment.

Per Go Aztecs - Waters is labeled a Junior - as his first year ( believe that was the extra Covid Season ) he was not eligible until January Semester - so would guess that he has 2 years after this season if he chooses .
Cade has a scholarship for this season so would presume his scholarship is open to be filled for next season - Shay is a decision up to the coaches as to if they need a 13th scholarship to use - he might be asked to try to find another school so he could get some PT
In basics there are numerous moving parts as pretty sure the players who do have options are primarily trying to see what kind of results are they going to put up for the remainder of this season
In addition try to see what NIL money is actually going to be out there for each person
So find it difficult to try to figure who might even be on the roster .
would also guess that the SDSU coaches will keep an eye out for the names that hit the Portal and importantly chat with the guys they currently do have at the end of the season as to what those players have in mind for their future -

LeDee will be playing professionally somewhere next year.
That is a lot of production to replace and I admit to already wondering how that it will all play out.
But they always seem to find a way, I do trust the program culture in that way. But the league was wicked this year, so we definitely need reinforcements.

NIL was always around….it was just hidden in the background. They just made it “legal” to buy players, but that’s been going on for 30 years+

It’s not so bad playing in the MWC in hoops. One of the better conferences out there.
I’m not so sure kids would leave a place where they are getting a lot of attention for some $….bit if it’s A LOT of $ then one would have to sit down and think about it!

Let's stop with NIL Money, Covid-19 excuses and etc.. Uh, what happened to recruiting Players?
I would use the Covid-19 and Portal Transfer to get my Undergraduate and Mater Degrees!!
Can you make sone decent MMONEY playing overseas? Of course, you can!!
Aztecs have always had a RIM Protector! SDSU Coaching Staff needs to recruit one, find one and/or develop one!!
Next year MBB Team and thereafter, will struggle until guards, forwards and center positions are addressed.
Aztecs Teams from 2013 have been living off the success of the 2010-2011 Aztecs!! Arguably, the BEST TEAM in San Diego State's History!!
Can you imagine the 2010-2011 Team playing the current NCAA's BUM Teams across the US??

I think next year you have Byrd, Waters and Saunders to build around. Then it’s who’s the next 5-6.
Butler and his family seem like great people but he’s got one more year to make a case for a pro career and I don’t think our offensive system is good for him. I think he leaves and I won’t blame him.
I don’t think Davis is ready to take over so they need a portal PG.
Gwath and Heide are probably still at a point in their careers where coming off the bench might still be the best so they’ll be looking for a big man in the portal. Do we see Heide redshirt? He’s got a lot of potential and still growing but has a lot of work to do. If they can bring someone in it might be a good thing for him.
I do expect Compton and DeGourville to get minutes.

He's not going to be as prolific of a scorer as LeDee, but you will see marked improvement, and we have already, as he gains more experience and takes on more responsibility.

Which I'd totally take for our starting Center. That doesn't mean we won't look at an experienced 5 in the portal... but having Heide looking like a strong threat for playing time might make that difficult .

I don't think Heide is ready for a starting role yet, though from today to this time next year, he very well could be. I think if I were the hopeful type, I'd be hoping that someone out there who has just one more year to burn, who isn't quite ready for NBA or Pro Ball, who "can play the 5", knows how to shoot a basketball, and can swat flies at random, will find their way over to Montezuma Mesa.

Exactly my thinking... a good smaller-school Center looking to spend his final season of eligibility "on a bigger stage" but without the ego of a former 5* recruit looking to just automatically 'be the man' at a new school.

Why is everyone keeps on saying Magoon going to be a center. Seriously, he is a finesse 4. Thokbor Majak is a center. He is raw and will have to redshirt. So clearly SDSU needs a a senior center transfer. Heide (who I think will be good as a junior and senior) will take over as the starter. Then have Majak back up Heide.
