hopefully there are still numerous games to play
Guys can change their minds quite often as to if they are staying or going - minds might not be made up until the team finishes their play this season
Same for a real lot of players from other teams -
So you do not get too much whiplash - wait until the end of the season or a player makes an actual statement

If there's a reason why the top two teams in MWC are where they are … True 5's. There's no question that this has hindered the Aztecs this season. If LeDee could've just played 4 … and had someone anyone else inside to protect him.

I know this may be an unnecessary worry, but I fear that Saunders may enter the portal. Don't you think that some power conference school with lots of NIL money might see him as a really good addition?
AzWm Byrd and Saunders are both potential NIL$ transfers. But everyone is kind of a potential transfer. It's just going to get worse and worse until some rules are laid down. The think the whole MWC can lose some important, talented guys next year. UNLV's Thomas, UNM's Dent and Toppin are also prime targets.

Eliot in his poem "The Hollow Men" says, "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper." It's starting to look like that's what's going to happen with the traditional college sports we grew up with.

There is no predicting what guys are going to want or do for next season both at SDSU and every other team
So coaches are going to have to worry about this season But keep an eye out for the transfer portal in and out
Also do not know what may happen with the merry go round as coaches and assistant coaches make their changes
Agree a major problem was not having an actual physical center to play with Ledee moving to the 4 position
As for next year would guess that both Alger and Shay are seen as either moving on to get PT or last minute scholarships if SDSU can not add other players so it easily makes it a roster of 11 scholarship players - depending on who might transfer in or out
What is the talent of the 3 HS players coming in - as we have seen it does take some time for the Bigs to develop
A lot of moving parts - with NIL - Transfers ...

AzWm The sad reality is any of our players that show any future potential will be an NIL target for the power conferences.

We won't see a Sweet Sixteen basketball team again as long as the present situation continues. It is a disgrace. The NCAA had years to set up something for football and basketball that would make sense by all players getting the same amount, but now the horse has completely left the barn and is obviously changing the entire landscape. Even though NIL bodes poorly for SDSU, that isn't my biggest problem with it. I think the players should get paid in Division I Football and Basketball due to the amount of money they bring in. But to not have any rules or "cap" on it, the playing field becomes even more uneven and it ruins competitive balance. Too bad the NCAA has been so greedy and was run so poorly for so long, they actually had a chance to put a program in place that might have made sense but now it is too late.

Needs are PG and Center. Guards are easy to find in the portal. Center is super hard. Example getting a good center after going to the national championship game.

AzWm The sad reality is any of our players that show any future potential will be an NIL target for the power conferences. Sadly, I concur. Unless a kid is okay with ground floor NIL, he's gone. You won't see Coaches actually develop talent. With the NIL and transfer portal, Coaches are looking for guys who can contribute next season. The same with HS recruiting, Coaches will recruit kids with high floors and low ceilings because they can contribute now. Kids with low floors but higher ceilings will be passed over simply because as soon as they shine, they are gone. These kids will jave to start at the lower levels and work their way up as did Jay Pal.

Many schools will be just year to year teams, with major roster turnover every year.

We won't see a Sweet Sixteen basketball team again as long as the present situation continues. You’re wrong. We just landed a top 100 recruit in Compton that had offers from a ton of P5’s with lots of NIL. We also grabbed Waters out of the portal who had interest from many P5’s. Will it be more challenging, perhaps, but the MW is looking at getting 6 bids and no school has huge NIL to speak of. SDSU and FAU just made the final four last year and Princeton made the sweet sixteen all with NIL in place. I’ll bet you any amount of money that we’ll continue to see lesser NIL schools make sweet sixteens year in and year out.

If I were a recruiter, I wouldn't bother to recruit a kid whose family is destitute. That's when NIL comes in.

Here’s who I think will be on the team next year.
Senior Status Reese Waters - SG/SF Junior Status Myles Byrd - SG/SF Elijah Saunders - PF Demarshay Johnson - C (unless he graduates) Sophomore Status BJ Davis - PG Miles Heide - C Freshman Status Magoon Gwath (RS) - C Taj DeGourville - SG Pharaoh Compton - PF David Majak - C
That leaves 3-4 scholarships. I’d imagine we’ll look at veteran guards and a center.

Shay is a red shirt sophomore so doubt he graduates after this season - think Cade might be a grad student -
Do not think even the guys know who will stay or who will go - think Keshad did not make his decision on leaving until he studied what was going to be out there
While the Aztec staff preps for the MW T - would also guess that they watch the Portal and send out a message for guys that enter the Portal from other schools to see who is even interested in SDSU
So the guys will give it their best during MW T and then MM - when MM is done then discuss with the staff how they them for next season and they also take a look at their options for next season - things can change daily as they are guys that want the best opportunity to get to the NBA - and take a look at what the NIL situation might be
Even Lamont might want to look at his realistic options
Bottom line a jump ball for a lot of the guys

Unfortunately, Ii’s inevitable they’ve seen the criticism Aztec fans have sent particularly early in the season. That doesn’t help any. If you are going to take big NIL money and go elsewhere, trust me there will be fans FAR more critical than Aztecs fans. Generally, Aztec fans are extremely supportive compared to a lot of other programs.
