Portal is now closed so that would mos def be a surprise. It's a really good thing that the portal is closing now. I'm right on the cusp of not caring who's going, who's coming or who's staying. I don't want to stop caring, but it's getting tougher and tougher. The Wild, Wild, West. Sucks for the fans, coaches and teammates.

Basketball has a 44-day window open for the transfer portal: March 18th to May 1st. I believe it's until Midnight tonight.

From SDSU walk-on Ryan Schwartz, I am officially in the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Here are some hitting highlights from my Freshman year in the SAC. @chasehhitting. The video is on X.

Do we need to replace Elijah? Should we be looking for another shooter (Wing or Guard), or red shirt a transfer for next season and develop them? We learned did learn that Shay will Stay. In my mind, our rotation players = 10. (Johnson, garbage time, & Majak, red shirt)
Post Players 1. Miles Hiede 6’10” 225, Sophomore, SDSU 2. Jerald Coleman-Jones 6’10” 240, Grad Transfer, Middle Tennessee 3. Magoon Gwath 7’0” 195, RS Freshman, SDSU 4. David Majak 7’0” 190, Freshman (will likely RS), HS 5. Demarshay Johnson 6’10” 210, RS Junior, SDSU 6. Pharoah Compton 6’8” 220, Freshman, HS Wings 7. Reese Waters 6’6” 210, RS Senior, USC 8. Wayne McKinney 6’0” 190, Senior, USD

Okay, so for fun... updating a hypothetical lineup / rotation:
PG: McKinney / Davis SG: Boyd / DeGourville SG/SF: Byrd & Waters PF: transfer TBD / Gwath / Compton C: JCJ / Heide
Main rotation of 8-deep, in no particular order of starters: McKinney, Boyd, Byrd, Waters, transfer PF, Gwath (I am assuming be beats out Compton), JCJ, Heide.
Davis will get plenty of minutes as well, but I think 9-deep is about as far as Dutch will regularly go. If DeGourville forces Dutch to go 10-deep, this will be one hell of a team.
I think Boyd starts for sure... which is going to mean that 1 of McKinney, Waters, or Boyd comes off the bench as '6th man'.
98% sure Majak will redshirt.

It be cool if Heide, Gwath, Compton, and, maybe, Taj could step up. Or BJ. Need 2 of them to do so.

Unless I'm underselling Boyd & JCJ or failing to see enough of a leap from Byrd & Waters to handle all of the crunch time scoring. Find a scorer who is a wing, ideally with size, that can be the microwave when the offense stagnates with 10 mins left in the 2H that can be left in to close if he's hot. Considering the rotation is in a good place, take a swing at player outside the typical mold to address the scoring droughts this team faces every season.

I’m most excited about BJ Davis I'm having a really hard time figuring out who I am most excited about. To what heights can Byrd elevate his game? Same for Heide after gaining valuable experience as a true frosh. Can Waters rediscover his red-hot form from the first couple months of this past season? What type of immediate impact will we see from Boyd, McKinney, and JCJ? The (semi-)unknowns: David, Gwath, Compton, DeGourville... who stands out the most? ...and the TBD transfer PF

I think save for center and PG we can just go bpa for our last transfer.

Wayne McKinney 6’0” 190, Senior, USD My personal thought with this squad is we need a junkyard dog that grabs rebounds and scores down low at PF. I hope Heide takes a big leap in this regard, but JCJ hasn't proven he's a great rebounder yet and Magoon may struggle with his build. Lineup I could see with backups - PG - McKinney / Boyd / Davis SG - Reese / Boyd / Degourville SF - Byrd / Reese / Degourville PF - Transfer / Magoon / Compton C - JCJ / Heide / Demarshay / Magoon My hope is we get non-conference Reese back (IMO he was playing like one of the best SG's in the nation before injury/conference play). Byrd noted he really wants to work on his 3pt shot this offseason. McKinney and Boyd are in for a battle this summer, I could see Boyd be in the running for MW 6th man, lots of minutes to go around.

Between McKinney / Boyd / Reese / Byrd ...I have no clue which one of them doesn't start. Three of the four start for sure (IMO). But all 4 can't start unless we really go small.

My guess is McKinney comes off the bench to start the year, but plays starter level minutes and probably closes a lot of games.

Looking at the roster Gundo posted, it was time for all those that transferred to do so. Definitely time for Butler to move on.

Without the extra COVID-19 eligibility rule, Parrish & Butler would have moved on naturally, so it's hard to plan on a 5th year when the player graduates, and perhaps doesn't have a straight path to the NBA, why not play a 5thyear and collect life-changing NIL money?
I'm listening to Dave V today, who said they are pleased with the MBB roster and just one spot away from finalizing the 24/25 squad. They are after a PF, but expect both Freshman to play game minutes and Magoon. They said the same thing about Heide who played in 37 games and over 30 minutes.

Thomas is special. The way Waters played before he got hurt looked like he was gonna co-star with LeDee. Coupled with Byrd's development they can form a duo like Tapley and Franklin. Heide just needs stronger hands to become a good rebounder. His rebound rate despite getting the ball knocked loose was actually pretty good especially for a freshman

Compton is a 4 star recruit and likes to play around the basket - so he could be your physical style player

The ball was knocked out of his grip quite often. I think he worked on it and became a decent rebounder as the season wound down. Now I'm anxious to see if he has an offensive game next season. Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise?

Wouldn't that be a pleasant surprise? His offensive game under the basket wasn't bad, once he learned to hang on to the ball. I'm interested in seeing if he develops a solid midrange game. I suspect he will. I'm sure that was part of his marching orders from Dutch to work on over the offseason. It won't be as good as LeDee's, but very few bigs can shoot the ball like LeDee. I just want to see it become another weapon for Heide.
