Scholarship is given year to year right? There is no obligation from Dutch to give Johnson one this coming year if he’s not performing. If Dutch is smart he should put Johnson on a student aid program and use this extra scholarship to go and recruit some more scorers. Dutch is getting old and he needs to do anything possible to win a natty before his time is up at SdSu

With NIL and unlimited transfers, players now see their obligation to a school as a 1 year commitment. No reason the school’s commitment shouldn’t be 1 year as well. If DJ’s scholarship can be used to bring in a contributor (which he is not) then there is no reason not to go that route. College basketball is a ruthless business.

Seems the Aztecs have zeroed in on Boyd. Now it’s just a wait and see with him. The other scholarship seems like it’s going to go to a 6’7-6’9 guy who can rebound. We only have two scholarships right now. If Butler decides to go pro then there’s another. Given Johnson is still working out with the team and the portal closes in less than 2 weeks, don’t expect him to put his name in. I just don't understand how or why Demarshay would stay here. We have two very tall guys who will play in the next two years as well as at least two 6'8" power forwards who'll get playing time. I'm sure he likes his teammates and experiencing winning but I don't want someone here who's satisfied coming off the bench every 3 or 4 games for a few minutes at the end of games. Maybe he is getting an education and degree and likes it at SDSU? Yes, if his only motivation was playing time he could get that elsewhere but the dude has gone to the last 2 sweet 16's which has been a great experience for him. Every team need a bench and guys that are wiling to practice and know they will not get many minutes. They still have value to the team.

At this point why wouldn’t he stay? There’s a clear path to playing time next season if we don’t bring in a transfer center - which are at a premium. On the Aztecs side why would we give up our tallest/lenghtiest player that has multiple years of experience in this crazy current transfer environment? Especially when big guys take the longest to develop. Frankly I think we do need a veteran big… but I trust the coaching staff to determine if the right ones aren’t out there then we figure out something else.

Shay will be the 13 th scholarship and a safety valve in case the other 5's get injured
Have no clue how the new 7ft player coming in will be - need a season on the Red shirt list to gain some time to gain the frame that might be needed - not sure how many years of HS experience he has
Heide only played a small amount of the time his freshman year - have to hope he really works hard this off season
Shay and the family might also want him to stay in the SDSU system to make sure he graduates and he has never complained being the last person can also hope that he makes some improvements

Well, clearly it’s time you called him to tell him to get off his @ss and do something because you’re getting antsy. If I had his number, I would. If I had Kawhi's number, I'd also call him and tell him to snap off a couple of million to the Mesa Foundation. Neither would likely take my call. 619-594-5200

Dutcher and Fisher have never run their basketball programs in that manner, they always treat the players like family. It's that trust that lands them big commitments.

Demarshay can do whatever he pleases, regardless i don’t see a path for playing time for him.

I would just be happy if Johnson improved his free throw accuracy at this point. This improvement would get him a few more minutes per game. Not going to be a starter on this team although could be an option off the bench.

The school’s commitment has always been one year, some of them just treat that differently than others. You also can’t land 13 guys who can all meaningfully contribute at the high major level, but expect 5 of them to be cool with garbage minutes. If Demarshay Johnson is good at his role of emergency 5, helpful in practice, with a chance of being a primary back up, that has value.

When we recruit over him the nudge may be enough, and they'll do their best to help him land somewhere. But they're not yanking his scholarship. It's not who they are.

I want my garbage minute players to be younger with an opportunity to improve. Not a player entering his fourth season with SDSU. Not a player who shoots the ugliest FT I have ever seen at the ncaa level. If demarshay wants to play, he will need to transfer to a lower tier program. He could get real minutes of playing time at some schools on his physical talents. If DJ has no further playing aspirations, values the education and experience of sdsu then maybe he decides to stay but I know I would want to play. I would look to transfer to a bottom 100 ranked D1 team and get some playing time. Go aztecs

We will be a Final 4 team if we can get Mahaney, Boyd, a transfer big, and Waters return.

Go aztecs Everyone would like their end of the bench guys to be “prospects,” but that’s what Demarshay was at one point. You can’t just cycle through those guys and expect to continue landing them. Ultimately, Demarshay being on the team has so very little to do with how well they do this year or in the future. In light of how inconsequential it is, the comments here are very out of pocket, IMO. He might do ok with some extended run. He might not. He probably won’t get it either way, but we don’t see any of his contributions at practice, in the locker room, etc. It’s poor form to be so critical in a public setting, IMO.

I’m not saying yank his scholarship but the seat he fills could be taken by a difference maker, which he is not.

How could you say it’s inconsequential? It’s very consequential. He’s a player that isn’t good enough to play for us and he’s taking up the scholarship that could be used on an important piece that could help us.
