Okay, I get it. How can anyone with a reasonable mind and knowledge of the last few years of American politics defend Trump? The Democrats are eager to characterize Trump's supporters as fascist, racist, anti-Democratic thugs. Why would they not? Though few of them would admit it publicly, they surely must revel in the possibility that they have an excellent chance of becoming the permanent majority party in the USA. Good for the Democrats, I suppose, but good for the country?
Perhaps, instead of just heaping manure of Trump's supporters, it might be useful to try to understand why he has so many of them. I am appalled that so may continue to treat Trump as a hero. But it seems to me that calling them fascist, racists, etc. misses the mark. Let's look at what has happened to this country over the last 30 or 40 years.
When I was a young (late 40s to early 60s), the USA was number one in about everything. Despite a recovering Europe, we were the undisputed economic leader by a wide margin. That was abundantly clear in the 1960s. Starting in the 70s, things began to change; starting in the 80s, our position really started to deteriorate. The losers in WWII (to a lesser extent some of the winners) had regained their footing. Germany and Japan lead the way. And then came China!
What has happened is the the manufactuiring base in the country has been hollowed out. Millions and millons of good jobs just disappeared. The workers who have been impacted (most of whom have little education) do not have the rosy outlook enjoyed by the college graduates to have landed in Silicon Valley, Austin, and other high-tech enclaves.
At the same time, the political party that once cattered to the working class, has been taken over by very extreme partisans who believe the country is hopelessly corrupt and must be completely purged of its evil roots. Two genders? No, there are many. Police? They, rather than the gangs who are every day killing law-abiding minorities, are the real threat to people of color. And so on.
Frankly, I fear that neither party has a clue about how to alter what I see as the inevitable downward trajectory of this country, both economically and socially.
So, go ahead and heap crap on those of the right you don't like. Just do not wonder why they are the way that are.

William, I don't wonder why they are the way they are..they are an easy study. So easy, that trump manipulated them like silly putty. Just because America (and the World) is changing rapidly due to technological and societal change..does not mean you will see the 1950's again. Make America Great Again is all about selling something that is no longer attainable. Evolve or perish...that means everyone.

When 1+1 no longer = 2 there is very little left to "understand." It's brainwashed/cult behavior, plain and simple. Case in point, there is one poster in particular here on the poli-board who has been given incontrovertible facts, ad nauseum, yet he continues to respond, "Nuh-uh" and defend Trump tooth and nail. Watch any number of the current cult documentaries that are popular on streaming right now and you'll see the exact same behavior. If you can't have a baseline of common understanding with these people, there is no point in trying to convince them of anything or "understand" them better. Although God bless Ryan, that doesn't stop him from trying.

Couple of problems here: First, Trump's extreme base isn't as popular as you're led to believe. Considering the gap between registered Dems and registered Republicans, you can safely assume you're probably 30% higher than the reality. Second, it's easy to understand why. Trump excelled in uneducated whites in both elections. Combine that with the death of actual news programming, you get regurgitated spin that people assume must be true, even if it isn't. They *trust* (inherently) dubious sources and don't ask questions, just settling for acceptance of what they want to hear. Thirdly, no, it doesn't miss the mark at all. Hallmarks of fascism: Powerful, continuous nationalism. (MAGA) Identification of enemies to unite an underlying cause. ("I'm being arrested for you.") Media control. (Fox, Newsmax, OAN.) Power derived from questioning reality, promoting myths and lies to stoke unrest. (Voter fraud, DOJ witch hunts, undermining of faith in government institutions.) A supreme, centralized focus on a leader who is infallible and never admits mistakes. (Trump.) When you actually look at facts, you'll see it fits together rather easily and is actually strikingly authentic and accurate to portrayals of earlier regimes in other countries across the world.

Bottom line, Trump IS a criminal scumbag with strong fascist tendencies. He thinks he's above the law. He thinks he can do whatever he wants without consequences.
He makes Nixon look honest and honorable, and that's NOT an exaggeration.
Where is the Republican outrage over one of their own disgracing their party? Nixon was a pariah for years. Trump? He's their hero. He really is like Mussolini in a lot of ways. He's got a stong base that supports him no matter what.
The Republican party has ZERO credibility right now. They support a man who tried to end democracy. They support a wannabe fascist. The Republicans used to strongly oppose totalitarian dictators, now they want their least intelligent and most corrupt representative to take total control of the country.
If you can't see how scary that is then you're willingly blind.

The guy has perfected hyperbole for years, and in his book extoled the power of repeating the same thing over and over again until people beleive it. One capable of critical thought is immune to that strategy. Unfortunately, millions aren't. "Only I can fix it", "I know more about ISIS than the generals", "I beleive Putin" and on and on. This is the only quote worth knowing... "I love the poorly educated"!!

His thug cult follower's response: “Hey you stupid slave,” Shry said before she referred to Chutkan using the N-word, the affidavit alleges. “You are in our sights, we want to kill you. … If Trump doesn’t get elected in 2024, we are coming to kill you, so tread lightly, b----.” “You will be targeted personally, publicly, your family, all of it,” she is alleged to have said. www.cnbc.com/2023/08/17/texas-woman-arrested-and-charged-with-threatening-federal-judge-overseeing-trumps-election-case.html

Lots of strong opinions here. Little proof, just opinion.
If in 2014 Trump came into politics and declared himself a Democrat, would you feel the same? You hypocrites would probably adore him. After all, Trump has said he almost went Dem because most of his friends and constituents were Democrats.
Trump is basically a political outsider who jumped the queue and became president. Every career slimebag politician in America is going to resent that, regardless of party affiliation.
Those of you who just casually toss around the term fascist, shame on you and your ignorance. Fascists take to the streets, riot, loot and burn down stores (summer of 2020 lest you forget). Fascists aggressively attack their political opponents, because fascists fear elections, and seek to discredit and arrest their political opponents (current day). Fascists use the media as their propaganda machine (the last 60 yeats). Fascists seek to use the education system to indoctrinate the next generation to their sinister ideas (since the 1960’s)
The only party right now which vaguely resembles a fascistic point of view are the Democrats.

Democrats are harder to target because in general, they tend to be more eclectic and can survive in nuance and gray areas. A used car salesman and carnival barker is smelled out immediately. Trump was greatly hated in New York before he ran. I personally despise bull$#!+ artists and can see them coming from a mile away. He never would have won as a Democrat..nor gotten past the debate stage.

What did Trump do that even remotely resembles Mussolini or Hitler? He built some stuff, made his fortune, got into politics, won an election, lost an election, ran his big mouth and got indicted by his political rivals. I’m just not seeing any similarities. The main thing I’m observing on this thread is a bunch of brainwashed political lemmings parroting what they hear from their Democratic political leaders. Your reflexive rhetoric calling Trump “worse than Hitler” or whatever is pure fiction. I can see why you may not like the man’s style, but your demonizing is way over the top. Biden is the worst President in history. See how it’s done? No need to play the “Hitler card”, that has become pathetic and cliche.

Biden is the worst President in history. See how it’s done? No need to play the “Hitler card”, that has become pathetic and cliche. If you don't want to be talked down to, get a grip on reality. You think people are just going to tolerate you lying out of your ass and making things up out of thin air? Why would anyone do that? Spare me the Biden criticism; I would HAPPILY replace him for another qualified candidate. You have fought to the ends of the Earth to defend a person who is likely going down as one of the worst presidents in history, actual reality, as opposed to the ramblings inside your mind. And outside of his political failures, he's just an incredibly awful human being, who would just as soon make money off your corpse than he would appreciate your vote. He's a racist, misogynistic fraud who preys on the weak and uses his narcissism and wealth to evade the justice system. Your false equivalences aside(Can we get some new material in 2023? Asking for the....world), you just don't seem to grasp the magnitude of what you're endorsing here. What did he do? He successfully fooled you. He made you a gullible, head-nodding guppy, promoting conspiracy theories and undermining safety in government institutions. That's where the Hitler comparisons come in: Nobody is saying he murdered six million people. What he did was transform and divide a vulnerable, unintelligent part of the country into believing that he was some kind of deity. He's fundraising off that stupidity RIGHT NOW as he awaits trials 1, 2, 3 and 4. Having a serious conversation with you is hard because your characterizations are just laughable. "He built some things and then became president." Nope, he used his family wealth to enrich himself, leaving a trail of unethical and disgusting activity in his wake. Sued in 1973 for refusing to rent apartments to Black citizens in New York. The infamous Central Park Five incident, where Trump called for the death penalty against five *innocent* people. The long-standing sexual abuse allegations. And that's just tip of the iceberg material here. If that's your hero, you deserve what you get. No sympathy here.

Since you brought up fascism, I thought I would put a reminder of some of the hallmarks of fascism: Strong, continuous nationalism (Make America Great Again to a tee), contempt for electoral democracy (January 6th), centralism on an infallible leader (Donald himself), power originating from questioning societal realities (Voter fraud, integrity in government, etc), using myths and outrage to promote conspiracy (Tons of things apply here, whether it's election integrity, vaccination mandates or a host of other things.) When you actually look into some details, it's not all that far-fetched.

AzWm
The climate of middle America right now somewhat echoes that of 1930's Germany. Germany was buried in reparations for WWI, and there was a lot of German resentment towards the allied countries as a result (it wasn't Germany's fault any more then anyone else's). There are people in rural middle America who are unhappy about the loss of jobs to China and Mexico, a lack of good middle wage jobs in general, and immigrants from Mexico who are taking their jobs and/or are hurting their earning power. Economic pain + anger towards foreigners - that literally matches the political climate in Germany after WWI. Granted, in America you are talking about just a portion of the country, whereas the economic pain and anger towards foreign countries was all over Germany.

Fascists seek to use the education system to indoctrinate the next generation to their sinister ideas (since the 1960’s) The only party right now which vaguely resembles a fascistic point of view are the Democrats. Aside from the jingoistic tone of the Make America Great Again slogan, most of what you wrote above is rubbish. As far as questioning the election, I guess that is only allowed if a democrat candidate like Stacey Abrams, Hillary Clinton or Al Gore who voices the concerns. If Trump tries it, arrest him, charge him with treason, RICO, anti KKK statutes, which on the surface looks absurd. This is a two edged sword, and the Republicans will probably go after Biden for his influence peddling to Ukraine and other political corruption charges. At least with these proceedings there is at least some tangible evidence of Biden lying about his role in his son’s business dealings. It’s a mess, with activist judges, phony charges, political intrigue and a biased media. I doubt any of this will be sorted out any time soon and eventually the Supreme Court will be involved. So much for Build Back Better…kind of a dud of a political slogan, but strangely appropriate for confused Joe..
