I think the call is made because the foul came from behind. If there was mutual contact from the defender and he was in front of the offensive player, it is less likely to be called. But the defender is beat to the basket and grabs the offensive player.
I would still be upset if I was a Creighton fan, but it was a foul. It sucks for Creighton fans, but he is getting beat and he grabs the player as he is shooting...

If creighton fans want to be mad at the foul then be mad at the defender who committed the foul.
First he got easily by trammel heading to the basket.
Second, if he doesn’t put his hand on trammel’s back, there is a very good chance that he would have missed the shot.
I am sure the coach told them during the timeout not to foul.

Oldie Out I remember this epic play, with Kalkbrenner throwing his elbow into Mensahs neck, and a no call. Doesn't matter now!!!

If the roles were reversed I guarantee they would be singing a different tune for a Big East team.

Well, I was pretty upset about the last couple of minutes of the Creighton game last year. It's their turn to be upset. That foul made SDSU and Creighton even on number of fouls called, and they shot more free throws then we did, and there were a number of non calls that should have been called against Creighton earlier in the game. Trammell beat his man and was pulled in the air - it's a clear foul. If Trammell didn't beat him and his defender is in front of him and puts a hand on his hip, you might not even see it and it probably doesn't get called. It's a foul plain and simple because he pulls him. If it was an open hand on his hip I'm not sure if it gets called to be honest.

The most revealing angle was where I saw the defender's left hand pulling down on Trammell's jersey when he shot the ball. You could see the creases on Trammell's jersey being pulled down, so of course the shot was short. He didn't have the height at the top of his jump. Barkley saying the ref shouldn't have called the foul under the circumstances was just being the clown that he is.

The very valid argument is that they let it go all game long and should call the game consistently at the end. I'm obviously glad we got the call and would be upset if the roles were reversed - just like everyone here would be.

I think a big part of it is that that Ref knew, obviously, that it was a play that everyone was watching intently, basically the final play of the game and if he got it wrong, he was going to be graded for that. I think in that situation, since there was hyper focus on it, what happened all game long was thrown out the door and it became an isolated, hyper focused play for the Refs and that particular Ref had the best view, and great angle on it. He obviously felt it was so obvious that he HAD to call a foul. It also didn't hurt that Trammell fell down.
