I get the pessimism, I really do. We can never have anything nice. That being said, if the PAC tried to expand a year ago with UCLA and USC still there we would not have even been an afterthought. Our only option was praying to the universe the Big 12 wanted us, and it was always a long shot. That is no longer our only option, and any of the available possibilities today are better than staying put in the MW. Worst case, we stay put in the MW and are exactly where we’ve always been. House money right now just gotta play the cards right and hope for some luck on the river. I recall the P12 commish stating several times (as was posted on this board) over the past couple years since Texas and Okla bolted for the SEC that the P12 was going to stand pat and had no intention of expanding. While you're correct that there was probably no way the conference could've staved off the tsunami of $$$ that lured SC and UCLA away, he still should've been running around with his hair on fire doing everything he could to build some defenses for the conference.

He’s quoted in the UT today. Nothing earth shattering at all. But, I’ve gotta believe he’ll be quoted a lot in the coming weeks as the PAC is on the clock. The Pac just lost their biggest market. Now how serious are their presidents about athletic relevance? Will they stubbornly cling to their academic requirements or will they compromise? That R1 status may be our albatross for now, but we are the biggest market remaining.

Having said that, there has been speculation, mostly dismissed as outlandish, for at least the last couple years that SC/UCLA might jump to the B10. I heard it several times, and it was probably even posted on this board a few times. So it's not like this was never discussed prior to Wed.

Expanding with several MW schools (SDSU, UNLV, Fresno, CSU) is simply not going to fly. SDSU best hope is the 10 schools expand to 14 or 16 by take 3 or 5 B12 plus SDSU for the SoCal market. Oregon and UW will definitely want a presence in SoCal for recruiting purposes.
The Pac10 best option is to raid the B12 plus SDSU for the SoCal market
Pac16 Pac North: UO, OSU, UW, WSU, Cal, Stan, BYU, Oklahoma State Pac South: UA, ASU, CU, UU, Hou, Baylor, TCU, SDSU

If the Pac12 is serious about surviving the need to dump the R1 status. R1 out west? Colorado State, they have that market for now so this does nothing. UNM, do they still have a football team? Nevada, that place is a mess and lucky to be in the MW. Hawaii, there’s no market there. Maybe they move UC Davis up because they feel that would bring them the Sacramento market which they already have with Stanford and Cal. SDSU and Boise are the best two programs out west that could give you something in a TV deal and next up is UNLV for the market and hope they can figure things out.

Especially a Houston, who's already paying a buyout & would need to do so yet again. And it wouldn't be for a significant revenue jump this time.

each day the news seems more grim. our ace in the hole is that we are the only unaligned School in So Cal. talk today is now how the SEC will pick apart the ACC and how there is a bidding war for Notre Dame. Once Notre Dame decides its course, the dominoes will start to fall. ACC and Pac12 will be taken apart by the BIG, Big12, and the SEC. teams will be 20-24 members (20 members being most likely). Big12 and MWC with the left overs.

The question is who is going to break the news once it becomes official and not speculative any longer, and we are officially a member of the PAC10?

Not sure why the B12 would survive but not the P12? Legislature in WA & OR are already fighting a potential UW & UO move. If the P12 can keep them, then the holes to fill wouldn't be as drastic & SDSU fills the SoCal angle. It's funny, people were writing the B12's epitaph when UT & OK left, saying there's no way they could survive. They have. Now they're saying the same about the P12. Long term, I have no doubt D1 football will be divided into 2 tiers - the haves & the have nots, which could be anywhere from 40-60+ teams in Tier 1 & the rest in Tier 2. That could be 2 conferences - B1G & SEC, OR just some of the teams in those 2 conferences (sans Vandy, etc.) + the best of the rest? The real question is why jump from the P12 to the B12 or vice versa if ultimately this changes even more in a few more years & neither exist?

I’m not sure why you need Fresno if you have Cal and Stanford. I trade Fresno for UNLV.

Would like to hear what the TV networks are willing to pay
The SEC starts out with numerous quality teams and viewers that watch them - then adds 2 schools with major TV followers the Sooners and Longhorns
BIG with a strong TV base of viewers then adds USC and very likely UCLA or if not could Houston slip in there ? or Stanford or Duck landing
So that could be 2 very strong and wealthy TV deals
Then you have Big 12 Lite , PAC Lite and ACC praying that a Dabo return with a slice of N.D on the rise or will they try to add Memphis or UCF ?
If you are a Network TV group how much are you willing to pay a Conference - will you pay more if they add more schools - remember TV networks have told Conferences they are not going to pay more just because you add schools - TV wants quality teams NOT just mid to low level teams they do not want filler games they would rather have the same high quality teams playing .
Look at it from the people who have the Money and may have a say -the TV Networks - This is Big business

Please don't let Stan get the letter he'll send back a 50 point questionnaire asking for additional timelines, organizational charts, conference breakdowns, offseason exercise schedules and most importantly who can play the 5.

Since most expansion is Football First Orientation
Do understand all the Expansion is Money and TV Deal - and TV can pretty well determine the levels or Tiers of even the Power Conferences
The BIG and SEC could very well be at one Payout level -
then PAC-Lite , Big ? Lite and ACC with a Dabbo at another level
then dribble down economics to the other G league conferences
Recognize the TV Networks have also told the conferences they do NOT want conferences to load up with teams- it will not get them more money
they want to be able to show quality teams rather then a wide variety of teams - so add teams but Conferences may not get that much more money
If you do want me to add the Q what is the 5 position in Football - go right ahead or is it ok just to say the Aztecs play a 3-3-5 defense

Can someone turn on SGF's aztec signal? He's the hero we never knew we wanted, but now need. Would love his nuanced insight into this conference shuffling.

The Big 12 offers a near coast to coast blue print.. they were the first, B1G is the second. Does the SEC go coast to coast too? Can the PAC12 survive without going coast to coast? if they do where does that leave SDSU? the thought was...it just wasnt worth the effort to expand east, when its already been done by the BIG12. The Big12 took the names worth taking in their expansion run. If the PAC12 expands east their options will be severely limited. Would you leave the BIG12 for the PAC12? doubtful. They may waste a year trying and if they do that without wining and dining BOISE, SDSU, UNLV... then they pretty much are writing their epitaph. Cause the BIG12 would love to poach themselves some PAC12 and there are members who would love to leave the PAC12 and join the Big12 right now.

Pac12 should gut the MGC right now with no hesitation. They have had PLENTY of time to work on contingency plans so shame on them if they don’t have one.
New Pac16
North ===== Wash/WSU Ore/OSt UU/Boise St CO/CSU
South ====== Stanford/Cal Reno/UNLV FSt/SDSU ASU/UA
On par with Big 12 and able to keep up with the ACC. Sticks a fork in the MW!
