Didn't they say that about the Murf back in the day? Exactly. The Raiders will suck up all the football oxygen in Las Vegas. UNLV will be even more of an after thought. That stadium is way too big for UNLV. They are going to experience what SDSU did for decades. Even if they manage to draw 35,000 people the stadium will look empty. At least they got rid of the crappy turf design they had at Sam Boyd.

I think the bigger issue with Qualcomm was the sight lines though because it was a multi sport stadium. The stands were extremely far from the field. If the sightlines are really good (which I'm sure they are) I think the UNLV gameday experience would be much better than the Q, even if the stadium looks pretty empty

That article is disheartening. After Memphis and Boise St., Tulane? SMU? Southern Miss? Wow. That is unbelievable. Perhaps, its a Texas perspective with a focus on the south. But still, no mention of SDSU?

But still, no mention of SDSU? "Sources say there's a method to this madness and while on the surface many won't see or understand the appeal, ESPN will have its hand in which teams would be added." I think that's the key right there: ESPN will decide which schools will be next. Since we're never on ESPN (our contracts are with Fox and CBS Sports) I can see why we're not on their radar.

But still, no mention of SDSU? Don’t worry… that guy has no clue… ESPN already owns the most lucrative conference (SEC), and has significant rights to the B1G, ACC and P12, do you really think they are ultra focused on whether or not the B12 brings in Tulane, SoMiss or SDSU… If the B12 goes to 16 teams SDSU will get an invite.

I think that's the key right there: ESPN will decide which schools will be next. Since we're never on ESPN (our contracts are with Fox and CBS Sports) I can see why we're not on their radar. I see this one of two ways: 1. The fact that we are not currently an ESPN property could help us as it will allow ESPN to expand marketshare without incurring cost. 2. ESPN could consolidate they are current properties into fewer conferences, leaving the undesirable schools In a smaller conferences, where they can drastically reduce payments or elect not to pursue a new contract I would think that with increased streaming, Broadcasters will be searching for content. Being able to add market share and reduce cost by lessening payments to aac sold make sdsu attractive to espn. My family lives in DFW area and SMU is less than an afterthought behind UT, TT, A&M and Cowboys. Tulane is from a small market that is dominated by LSU. geography is our biggest enemy Two.

My family lives in DFW area and SMU is less than an afterthought behind UT, TT, A&M and Cowboys. TCU has to be > TT in DFW no? SMU and TCU both graduate about 2,000 people every year. Texas Tech graduates about 6,000. Most of the TTU graduates do not live long term in Lubbock. Many of them make it back to Dallas. In reality you have UT, Cowboys and Texas A&M all in the first tier. Then you have Houston amd Texas Tech along with Rangers/Astros/Mavs in Tier 2 and then you have a distant third tier of TCU amd to some extent SMU.

Ouch! That doesn't scream success with the TV viewers. I still think if we were in a better conference and the teams we played were better would be a huge help. I would like to know the numbers when we play UCLA, ASU, UofA, StanTurd, Etc. I bet the better teams allows us to really increase our viewer numbers.

I'd be willing to wager these numbers are off. Nielson is already under pressure to change their ratings to a modern realistic approach. They are switching to impressions rather than straight signal view. I cut the cord 5 or 6 years ago, so I don't count as a viewer. CA is an early adopter of things like technology and streaming. We play games on freaking Facebook for cryin out loud. You think that goes into this equation. Hell no. Granted being lost on CBSSN games that start at 730 doesn't help in any way. But still I think that article doesn't capture the true audience.

I think if the SDSU administrators didn't think SDSU was well positioned for a Big 12 invite they would be teaming up with CSU and AFA to try to get into the AAC. There seems to be no sense of panic coming from SDSU.
Also if SDSU is so "undesirable" Why were Boise and SDSU invited to the Big East and why this Summer were Bosie and SDSU rumored to be talking to the AAC about jumping?
Just wait until the Big 12 brass are invited to a game at a packed shiny new Aztec Stadium.
SDSU will be fine in the expansion frenzy. This still has a long way to go until it's finished.

Great article and data for discussion. Unfortunately, much of the success of the programs listed is created by the fact their games are played on the big or bigger networks. If SDSU was played every Saturday on CBS at 12 p.m., what do you think its ratings would be? Significantly greater than they are now for certain, and not because Aztec football suddenly became more popular. I remember watching Notre Dame year after year, when they were horrible! I hated it, but had little else to choose from. If we were in the PAC16, our ratings would skyrocket. So, "whatever" on the stats.
