When he doesn't even give it a slight try to break up a double play. He basically jogs to second and then gets out of the way of the throw, On a single from another player, he dogs it to second when he could be on third possibly, to name a few. Of course he hustles, only when he wants to. Again, another bad attempt at race baiting where it has zero relevance to me here, but only in your head. Angry much? It's not race baiting. It's the truth. Unfortunately, this is a narrative directed at a lot of players with the wrong skin color. That's a reality, not unique to Manny in the slightest. Your takes reek of "angry white guy" because I see them plastered all over social media. Not unique, either. Do I wish he would give max effort on every play? Sure. Does anyone in baseball? No. With the huge uptick in injuries this season, specifically soft tissue injuries, he's needed on the field. Reeks of "angry white guy." Wow, you've got issues at times Ryan, and I feel bad for you for that. If it makes you feel better to go with the race issue and be the best SJW you can be, then have at it. I won't respond to it anymore.

Put the nonsense on ignore and it'll only show up when others quote it. Critical thinking often leads to criticism. Nothing wrong with that. No one said he didn't care, just that his approach to the game at times seems a little nonchalant - but it's hard not to look that way when the man playing next to you is a whirling dervish.

Today's game--Pagan really struggled in his one inning of work. Fortunately, the last ball hit in the top of the 8th wasn't elevated.

Doesn't matter what color you are to notice a lack of hustle. The problem is, Manny isn't going to change in that regard. He hustles when he feels he needs to. He's still a good base runner, and I wouldn't want anyone else out in short RF for the 2-1-1 defensive shifts. It doesn't appear anyone with the club is worried about his perceived lack of hustle, so, as a former GM of the former NFL team that used to play here often said--"it is what it is".

Oh yeah, I believe, and know everything you say, but it still bugs me. I never really bring it up, but when it was blatant the other day, I couldn't help myself.

There's a certain demographic in play here and all you have to do is realize where the condescension is coming from. It's not even really subtle. Bob Brenly underwent sensitivity training, for God's sake. Here's the Reds beat reporter...

Comparing Machado to Tatis is a disservice. Comparing basically anyone to Tatis is a disservice. He's in basically his own class and I assure you after wear and tear takes its toll, he too will jog to first base on occasion.

I can't help you with your lack of awareness of his EXCESSIVE lack of hustle at times, that prevents him from being in scoring position, breaking up a double play, or beating out a slow roller or a bobbled hit ball by him. Obviously, I'll take what it in trade of what he brings to the table, but when there's a blatant lack of hustle that hurts the team, it should be brought up. As for your race card baiting, again, I'm not going there. You can reach there all you want.

From Acee - it's not like Manny would have beat that out even if he ran hard:
The reality is his judicious running is condoned and even encouraged by the coaching staff, because the Padres want him on the field rather than run down or injured because he tries to leg out routine grounders that have a 98 percent chance of being an out.
It is true that Machado could reach base a handful more times each season on plays in which a fielder bumbles a seemingly routine grounder. But he’s out on many of those, because he is only going at three-quarter speed, sometimes with his bat still in his hand.
The Padres are generally OK with that.
And, for the record, yesterday was not one of those plays. Even a sprint by Machado was likely not going to result in his being safe on a ball scorched at 112.1 mph to the second baseman. (That was the sixth-hardest ball put in play by Machado this season.)

(That was the sixth-hardest ball put in play by Machado this season.) Yeah, I get that, but to me and others, it's more about the running towards the other bases, where at times if he ran harder he could have gotten an extra base, or making more of an effort to try to break up a double play, etc... I'm not saying he always does it either. There's going to be times where he'll dog it to first and look bad, because the ball was bobbled and he could have potentially beat it out like the play against the Reds. That's the give and take of it all. It just happens to bother me, and I expressed it. I love what Manny brings to the table. Go Pads!!!

Manny just dogged it around the bases again - LOL
OK with me if he's doggin' it as long as it's because he just cranked one.
What a way to open this series… BAM!!

Even though he's a Bum now, it's still nice to see Mark Prior again. Quality kid, who grew up to be a quality man. Of course, he has some pretty great parents. Powayans should be proud…
Maybe some day he'll be back in Brown and Gold.

I'm impressed with Crismatt as of late. I like how he changes speeds and keeps them off balance.

Wow, Machado gets a sombrero for 0 for 4 and a terrible AB in the 8th. 3 swings at crap pitches and he was toast.
