Moving day is tomorrow. If he ends up in the red then I predict he'll be in the final group on Sunday. I really like his putting stroke.

No doubt, although DeChambeau is throwing a wrench into your "bomber" theory. Just like that, less than 45 minutes after your original post, Xander has moved up into 8th & the course is continuing to yield nothing. And that's before any of the leaders hit carnage central (holes 13-18). It's still early, but I'm predicting X ends the day in the top 6 (tied). I may need to adjust my prediction & say he'll finish in the top 5 and only 3 out of the lead! Unless Reed or Thomas turn things around. Only 5 rounds currently under par today, and that may fall to 2 or 3 by the end of the day. Crazy. +6 could make the cut overall. X is lucky to have played early, and is sitting very well. A top 5 US Open payout on top of his Fed Ex payout - that wouldn't be a bad couple weeks for anyone! True. But he needs to break through and actually win one of these things. He's in prime position to do so. Which makes his stumble on the last five holes yesterday so painful. Yes, he's in good shape. But sitting in second, one stroke back, would've been ideal. If he can go out and shoot a 67 or 68 today, I like his chances.

I think the way he played and closed the Tour Championship was a good, recent, trial run for this weekend. I watched that back 9, obviously hoping he could win, but also watching it as a rehearsal for this weekend. I thought he was close. He’s done a phenomenal job in such a short time on tour to be a perennial top 10 ranked in the world, currently #7 - again, phenomenal- but this is hopefully the time for him to take that next step by winning a major. He may need a little help with where he sits now via a few guys above bombing. Should be great watching.

Buckling like a cheap lounge chair. 3 straight birdies in a row at 13, 14, 15. Now +1. 5 off the leader Wolff. 3 behind the next 2.
He’s still “in it” but dropping back another shot or two might just about do his chances in.
Hopefully he can get it going, he often bounces back after rough patches.
This course is crushing almost everybody.

Great sand-save on 17 and long birdie putt on 18 gives him an outside chance on Sunday.

I really think that leader, Matt Wolff was lucky today. He only hit 2 fairways and that will catch up to him, especially with the pressure tomorrow. This may finally be Xanfer's win for the taking if he avoids screwing up after birdies. That's been his pattern.

Only Wolff slayed it, and with a little luck. Great round by X today - 8th best overall. In most years this would now be a 3 man race, but given that Wolff shot a 74 Friday and how brutal Wingfoot can be I think anyone within 6 is still in the game. That last pairing should be fun to watch, and the 2 steady guys in X and Luis, as well as Rory, could steal it. Should be a fun final day.

Nick Faldo was saying this morning that the rough was watered last night, and that playing out of the long grass today will be more difficult than yesterday. He also thinks if a player finishes under par for the tournament, they will likely win.

Wolfe got a real lucky break on the 18th when his drive went to the right landing in the tall rough only to have the ball bounce off the tall rough and land in the short rough. This enabled Wolfe to hit a great iron shot to set up his birdie putt. If the ball stays in the tall rough he might have boogied the last hole.
