They pulled down a statue called "Hey Reb" and promise some changes in the near future for their mascot: “I wanted to let you know that the Hey Reb! statue in front of the Tam Alumni Center was taken down this evening. In recent conversations with the donor we mutually agreed it was best to remove the statue and return it,” Meana’s statement read. “Over the past few months, I have had discussions with multiple individuals and stakeholder groups from campus and the community on how best the university can move forward given recent events throughout our nation. That includes the future of our mascot. The frequency of those conversations has increased in recent weeks, and I will have more to share with campus once the listening tour is complete.” www.foxnews.com/sports/unlv-removes-hey-reb-statue-confederate-ties-future

Buearegard was their mascot in the 60's and early 70's which sported confederate uniform, but they changed it in the early 70's. I guess they still had a statue of that version of the mascot, but I wouldn't expect their current logo/mascot to change.

the mwc MUST remove unlv from hosting the basketball tournaments and other events in the future for this action. I am looking forward to the SDSU-ucla football game to give my feedback for the professor being fired for holding students accountable for their finals. the students were protesting and didn't want to take their finals who have earned a grade of "F". That firing was wrong.

Looking forward to a change, screw racists mascots and monuments. 90% of you folks on this board most likely didn't experience any of this. The snowflake comment pissed me off. It’s time to change 75% of football players are black 85-90% of basketball players are black. We talk, and talk about our teams without identifying with real life issues. Listen to what KJ Feagin, Zylan Chetham, or AQ has to say.

In most cases i feel that the call for a mascot change is virtue signaling or political grandstanding. As i believe a mascot is often a sign of respect- as a man of Mexican heritage i have always been proud that my alma mater was the Aztecs (sending a shout out to the Mexica).
That being written, unlv called themselves the rebels and had a confederate general looking character out there for many years. So who are they trying to give respect to? I get it, the term rebel doesnt always refer to the confederacy (i recall the whole Admiral Ackbar thing ole miss tried), but it always seemed like unlv was hitching their term to the confederacy.
Am i mistaken on this?

President Washington ranks amongst the very greatest people to have ever have walked on this world, and we, as a nation, are incredibly blessed that such a man was there to lead us into our very existence. People who would take such action will never garner my sympathy. Somebody is always offended.

Am i mistaken on this? According to UNLV's website, the Rebels' mascot dates to the school's origin in the mid-1950s when it was an extension campus of the University of Nevada, Reno. Students and administrators drew the idea for Rebels from the natural rivalry that accompanied the split between what would become UNLV and UNR, the UNLV website says. www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/29322452/unlv-removes-hey-reb-statue-eyes-changes-mascot-widespread-social-justice-protests

Not really sure how much that will ultimately matter. Arguments will be made that if someone believes the Rebel moniker an allusion to the American Confederacy, this is inherently equal to the real origin, UNLV's split-off from UNR. This is grounded in Focault's theory of Post-Modern Structuralism (the central tenet of the modern 'Left'), which posits that reality must be subordinated to perception. To wit, how aggrieved parties feel about the name 'Runnin Rebels' and its origins transcends notions of Universal Objectivity, in other circles labeled 'Facts' or 'Truth'. To quote Jim Harrison, 'Reality is both perceptual and consensual'. While I do not personally subscribe to Post-Modern theory, it is the very beating heart of modern academia and must be understood when considering what will happen next in instances like these. JMO. I could be wrong. "Postmodernism is generally defined by an attitude of skepticism, irony, or rejection toward what it describes as the grand narratives and ideologies associated with modernism, often criticizing Enlightenment rationality and focusing on the role of ideology in maintaining political or economic power. Postmodern thinkers frequently describe knowledge claims and value systems as contingent or socially-conditioned, describing them as products of political, historical, or cultural discourses and hierarchies. Common targets of postmodern criticism include universalist ideas of objective reality, morality, truth, human nature, reason, science, language, and social progress. Accordingly, postmodern thought is broadly characterized by tendencies to self-consciousness, self-referentiality, epistemological and moral relativism, pluralism, and irreverence."

They sure made the thing look like a Confederate. And hardly anyone knows the story behind it. What did they expect?

The Dems (historically) have supported Native American extermination, slavery, The KKK, segregation, Japanese American internment and a host of other abominable institutions, including secession in 1860...rebels....on second thought they should probably keep the name. How can any educator with a even an ounce of intellectual integrity align with such historical malpractice? Allow their institutions to become overrun with such socialist nonsense? I’ll give the liberals credit, they are clever, but in the end....mentally disordered.
