This is only acceptable if Horton is shown the door. This fiasco is all on him. This. The only reason the offense had firepower during his tenure was because of Pumphrey and Penny (and Chase Price and Washington backing them up). The offense was spoiled crazy by them, and it became so one-dimensional that it turned the passing game into an afterthought. These last 2 seasons, in my arm-char opinion, showed how much a balanced offense was needed. Agnew showed he could be a passer (and he had great targets in Matthews and K. Smith), but I always felt the passing game was used reluctantly, even begrudgingly, (rather than in a balanced way) because of the rushing woes. If Washington was repeating his junior year performance, I bet the WRs would've been afterthoughts again and targeted sparingly...very useful weapons unused. What makes this entire situation so frustrating is that SDSU was soooo close to being undefeated and this 2pm announcement wouldn't be taking place. Those two 4th-down completions late against Utah State gave them a chance. Had a chance to tie Hawaii. Even if not go undefeated, a 1-loss SDSU would've been in the Cotton Bowl instead of Memphis. A half decent offense would've no doubt had us cheering right now about a 12-0 season, instead of the what-ifs. We know we could be reach the heights that Boise State had made, but those tweaks on offense had to be made, and it appears Rocky wasn't going to remove any personnel to do so

Oh well. It sure wasn’t supposed to end like this. Long was supposed to coach at least the first season in the new stadium, make it to 100 wins at SDSU, and then the new playing field was to be named for him (or some other lasting honor). Instead, he departs apparently under a cloud. Such is life with the Aztecs, I guess.
Like many, I wasn’t comfortable with every personnel choice Rocky made, but he was always toughness and integrity personified. He helped Hoke get things re-started here, and then he stabilized us into a clean, professional-minded college football operation. As Coach Fisher once said of the basketball team, “We didn’t have a program here before. Now we have a program.”
And now we have a football program. My sincere thanks, Coach Long. You gave us an excellent decade.

By choice? Reports say he was out shopping for DC jobs?

I really hope Hoke says "I would have walked to San Diego" for this job

One thing we know is that JD thinks it's time our athletic teams produce strong results on the field. He fired the longtime men's soccer coach and the volleyball coach, and Mrs. Hutson is next on the list. If our football team had even a decent offense, it might have been us getting the NY6 nod and the Cotton Bowl would have ended with a 14-9 score instead of 53-39.
There will be some nuance to our fond memories of Rocky Long. Consistently good, sometimes great defense. I thought his weekly news conferences were entertaining. Good guy to meet and chat with. Ran a clean program all the way around. Stubborn, but aren't most coaches? Tried to many untested assistants. Was able to see how Aztecs-4-Life Brian Sipe and the longtime WR coach (forget the name) weren't getting it done and replaced them, but couldn't pull the trigger with Horton. Mostly good, even great, tenure. A dose or two of not-so-good to go along with it.

For you all college offensive genesis who were crying for Hortons ouster including JD you got what you wanted. In the mean time one of the best college coaches to ever set foot on the Mesa has told you and JD to "stick it" Way to go JD and the no nothing cry babies! My gosh. Did you mistakenly take the wrong color pill this morning? BTW, Prozac is the blue/green colored pill. Man that was too funny, but maybe not to people who have serious issues with that type of problem. That could be a HIPPA violation.

Rocky just said he told Wicker he was going to retire before the bowl game and took the holiday to make sure. So maybe this has nothing to do with the speculation of why (Horton, for instance).

It was well known that Rocky preferred to be a coordinator.

I think a lot of you forget what Hoke did to revitalize this program in 2 short years. He got San Diego excited for SDSU football while winning in the hay day of Mountain west football with TCU, Utah, BYU. I think its good to have someone in program take over for all the new commits we just got, and I think Rocky and Brady share the same defensive ideology, which will keep the defense one of the best in the country. I'm just excited to get a new OC. Yeah, and he lost to all of those teams while he was here. And the program does not to be revitalized, we need to get to the elite level. Well, donate millions of dollars and we will get to the elite level.

Wait, I thought everyone was calling for RL's firing because he couldn't get to the next level and 10-win seasons sucked? Now, stability and the same is good enough? Lol. People were calling for Rocky to FIX the offense. Few were calling for his firing. That's true.

I like how the door is left open for a return as DC. Brady wants him and hopefully Rocky will consider it.

The speculation was just that. Rocky just made it pretty clear he wants to continue coaching, he just doesn't want the big chair anymore. He also said he wasn't leaving after a 7-6 season, so between the 10 win season, and Hoke being back onboard, it seems he knew now was the time to go out on his terms.
