I couldn't resist starting the first thread on these guys on the new board. I know it pisses a lot of people off. Anyways, how come Long was able to get an OC Div 1 job and Craft wasn't able to find anything at the D1 level even though he had worked as OC at SDSU from 94-96 and had more success than Long as head coach?

I saw this thread and said...really? Again? NO!
But to answer your question....( I couldn't resist)
Long has a way better resume than Craft (he himself was runner up Heisman, pro player, he coached Oklahoma Hiesman candidates and they were a winning football program. Secondly Long is a way better speaker (bullshitter) than Craft. SDSU paid Long a bunch of money, so that made him seem like a better coach.
I personally don't think Long is a better coach.

Craft has the label as a juco coach, Long as an nfl player, close loser in the heisman, OC at Oklahoma, etc - the same way the same coaches and managers just recycle through basketball and football. Once you get there you stay in the rotation for a while.

It's called having "connections". You notice that Long is back in the Big 12 which is where he coached before!

Geez, if Long is a better speaker than Craft, then Craft must invoke scenes out of "Airplane", when the various passengers seated next to Striker concocted different ways to commit suicide as he rambled on. I saw Long speak at Peterson Gym for a "getting to know the recruits" presentation. They dimmed the lights and showed highlights of them in high school, and he damn near put the crowd of about 250 to sleep. He was awful!

I was a bit surprised that Turner Gill didn't just bring his OC along with him from Buffalo to Kansas. However, I'm sure you're correct that Gill thought Chuck's connections within the Longhorn Conference would help him put together successful schemes to defend LHC defenses and to recruit - though I doubt Gill needs much help in the latter area. As to Craft, I've heard enough comments from insiders about extracurricular reasons for his firing by SDSU to assume that others within the coaching community have also heard them. So my guess is that more than anything, that is why he hasn't gotten another job at the DIA level.

I don't want to get into the Craft vs. Long BS but I've always been curious why Craft wasn't more successful.
I've come to the conclusion that Craft had very low self esteem and didn't like moving from his comfort level, which was JC football.
Tom Craft was a very successful JC head coach. He was hired as a Div I OC at SDSU and was very successful. He then quit and went back to JC. Why? He was a hot commodity and could have moved as a OC to a bigger program. He was then approached to become our head coach. He turned it down to stay at the JC. We basically begged him to sign on. Reluctantly, he did. He won some games, was competitive in others with a crappy budget and no administration support. He was then fired and went back to a JC. Anyone seeing a pattern? It is too bad because he could have been the next Norm Chow if he wanted to.
