This year was an absolute disaster for the Padres. They spent a TON of money, and got worse results than before.
So who's to blame? Who should be held accountable? And who should be let go?
More importantly, who should stay?
I'd love to see A.J. Preller gone. Bob Melvin, too - along with all of the hitting coaches (to be replaced by a single, "Hitting coach," and an assistant hitting coach).
Trent Grisham should have been gone last year, so I really want to see him gone. His numbers this year were pathetic. Had he even been a just a little less than average the Padres might have won another half dozen close games where he struck out with runners in scoring position.
After that, I'm not sure.
The players I want to keep the most would be Kim, Tatis, Soto, and Machado. I'm not sure about anyone else.

The issues with this team are: 1. Budget. Team management has indicated that they are lowering their payroll to 200M next year, and right now 190M is already committed for next year (not including Hader, Snell, Wacha, Martinez). In my opinion, this is why Soto will be traded - so that we can bring back Wacha and/or Martinez. Above all else, we need to develop our farm system and bring players up to balance out the expensive superstar salaries. 2. Front Office/Clubhouse Clashes. The front office and the clubhouse need to get on the same page. Our advance scouting cost us several games, our scouting reports were crap this year, and there is a lack of advanced analytics being given to hitters and pitchers to help them improve. This is one area where the Dodgers are amazing, and we are awful.

AJ Preller is believed to be returning.
Bob Melvin has the option to return, but probably will not.

Lucky us, that we are still paying Eric Hosmer through the 2025 season. The gift that keeps on giving.

But I do believe that Soto will be traded. Maybe he won't be. Maybe we will run with Waldron and Avila and pay for Wacha, and not bring back Snell and Martinez. There are a lot of possibilities and a lot of moving chairs. But there are less chairs then their are players, and Soto's salary next year looks like it will be taking up two chairs worth of salary.

Legacy contracts are negotiated and approved exclusively by Peter Seidler. They have the money. If you want a fun look at history, look at Acee's articles from the last two seasons where he talks about payroll speculation. He was WILDLY wrong both times.

Soo.. you think the Padres will make a proposal to MLB for a payroll level based on projections that have them in the playoffs next year, factoring that income into the proposal? I agree that it hurt them. I would assume the tv media deal hurt them as well.

I would be very surprised if there was any kind of hard number that they couldn't exceed. Just not how Seidler has ever operated.

Didn't help, but not the real problem. They incurred a ton of debt during the pandemic and then during the season last year expanded payroll to the point where they incurred a lot more.

I have a serious question for AztecRyan….. if you’re not employed by the Padres, how do you know so much about the inner workings?

Acee reporting that Melvin is expected back, but not confirmed yet. Situation is very fluid, with a lot more parties involved than usual, due to Seidler's health concerns at the moment.

AJ Preller and Bob Melvin will both return in 2024. Source - AJ Preller. Not sure how I feel about that - hopefully they have worked things out between them. The team did perform better in September. I liked the way that they used Grish in the last few weeks of the season.
