Well, it didn't take long for this team to implode.
As bad as Suarez was (utterly incompetent), and as horrible a pitch as Stammen delivered, they had a chance at another run in the top of the inning, but Grisham looked at every single pitch. Didn't swing once with a man on base. Strike 3, inning over. Of course, that wouldn't have won the game, but that was pretty pathetic, too.
Here are your 2022 San Diego Padres!
Still Not Ready for Prime Time Players!

This game should've been won by the Padres. Just like last year, they can't beat a team they have to beat. Darvish deserved the win tonight.

Lack of strong relief pitching, particularly in the 8th and 9th innings, will cost you a lot of games over the course of the season. Especially when your anemic offense only scores two runs.

I really feel bad for Darvish. He was lights out. With Tatis in there, we may have had more runs.

Lord Yu pitched well. We need more offense. He needs a new First Prime.

They literally just traded for a closer this morning, a guy who is projected to be a top five reliever in baseball.

Sure he is. This is the Padres. Moves like this usually haven't worked out well for the team over the last 24 years. I'll believe it when I see it. 24 years of failure. Sorry, I just don't believe in this franchise anymore, and I haven't believed in them, for multiple reasons, for well over a decade.

Well, it’s a good thing the Padres got Rogers, however getting him leads to protect might prove frustrating. The setup guys seem wild and very hittable. The “oops, sorry about the fastball that nearly took your head off” explanation is getting old and key Padres may get bats shoved up their asses or fastballs implanted in their ribs if this continues. The lack of command is the real issue, walks, wild pitches and HBP demonstrates most these guys need to be in AA working on their craft.

Your irrational and overboard takes don't change the reality of the situation. This is why I don't post immediately after games. It does nothing. And yes, Taylor Rogers (who you didn't even know about, apparently) is very good.

You don't want to see Rogers against many right handed hitters, that's for sure.

You had a shortened spring where most relievers only got to throw maybe five innings total in actual games and we are making insanely sensationalized judgments after one inning? Highly recommend not doing this. Watch other games. The guy who won the Cy Young last year walked three batters, nearly hit another and looked like he didn't know where the ball was going half the time. Then their bullpen blew the game against the lowly Cubs. It happens. Volatility is a thing. It'll be fine. The knee-jerk reactions in the moment are a poor characterization based on emotion. Breathe.

Well, he's going to face plenty of them. I anticipate he'll be fine. I hope so. The peripherals tell me he was dealing with a lot of fluky events. That's what FIP actually discerns from ERA. Of the 29 hits he gave up against right handed hitters, 23 were singles. Weak contact and a bad defensive infield? That changes.

Weak contact and a bad defensive infield? That changes. He has a history of not being all that great against righties. I hope that changes this year. I believe he'll keep it in the park, but let's hope he doesn't give up too many key hits, whether it's a single, double, triple, or home run, against those righties.

Have we had a really good closer since Trevor? I can't remember for sure. There was one guy who was really good, wasn't there? I think there was, but I'm forgetting his name...
