Have we had a really good closer since Trevor? I can't remember for sure. There was one guy who was really good, wasn't there? I think there was, but I'm forgetting his name... Melanson, Bell, Hand, Yates, Street, Rodney. Take your pick.

Unfortunately.

Unfortunately. None of them were Hall of Fame caliber and one of the best closers in baseball history? Wow, that's damning. A true indictment. Yates put up one of the best seasons for a reliever in this century. 7th best single season FIP since 2000, top 10 in ERA. He was terrible.. With every take, you just get more and more nonsensical. The Padres have never struggled to find a closer.

If its one thing the Padres have done well is finding well above average closers. Just in the group you mentioned I believe Bell and Melanson lead the NL in saves and all participated in all star games.

It's funny, but every year people predict the Pads will contend, and every year I laugh and wait for the inevitable collapse. Some years it comes earlier than others (sometimes as early as April), but it comes every single year.

Makes about as much sense as the arguments you're making about a lack of a closer and who knows what else.

I'm just acknowledging the fact that all we've had since 1998 has been failure. To deny that would be silly. And delusional. My point is simply this - after a quarter century of failure, often following the tease of expected success, why would you believe in this franchise? We've had 4 different ownership groups over that time, 4 or 5 GM's (I lost track), 4 or 5 managers - and it's all ended up with the same result. Failure. What are the odds that so many different owners, GM's, and managers all fail? That shouldn't be possible. But it has been.

What are the odds that so many different owners, GM's, and managers all fail? That shouldn't be possible. But it has been. Why? Because I know the difference between an invested GM and ownership group as opposed to what the Moorad and Moores era brought to San Diego. Peter Seidler wants to win. And it starts there, from the top, when you're building a culture. The team is running a payroll far beyond what it ever has, which signals a concerted effort to succeed by investing in the team's success. I just don't understand the immediate negativity after one game under a new manager and coaching staff. You have to realize, similar to your previous complaints about the game, that few owners care about winning baseball games. They care about lining their pockets and expanding wealth. Seidler is a baseball man through and through and I'll ride the wave as long as he is in charge here.

Umpire squeezing us again. Calling balls off the plate, like the one to Hosmer. A continuation from last night. Hosmer just made a nice dig at first.

Since this is a different ump, I wonder if there's some kind of league wide edict to start the season. Maybe another effort to speed up the game. I'd be happy to have a camera take over the balls and strikes at this point. Keep the homeplate umpire to back up fair/foul calls, substance abuse enforcement, and plays at the plate.

Identical situation as last night. Up 2-0 after 6 innings, and the pitcher has a no hitter. Let's hope we have a different outcome tonight.

LOL I think Manaea needs to finish this one, but he'll hit 90-100 pitches long before he hits the bottom of the ninth unless he gets some quick outs.

Dodged a massive bullet there. It might be if they end up needing that insurance run. We'll see. So far, not massive.

Dodged a massive bullet there. It could've been if they needed that insurance run. We'll see. So far, not massive. For a team struggling to score, you can't miss first base. Or nearly miss it. Got the call right, but way too close for comfort.

Very good start to the season for him.
