My take with all these violation stories is as a fan, I don't really care as I suspect there is shady stuff going on with almost every program in some way. I just care about getting caught and I'm mad that Yahoo couldnt wait a few weeks to break all this.

He's just a kid. Give him a break. Probably needed the money for textbooks.
BTW, does anybody know if we'll need to vacate all the championship banners for the time Malik was on the Mesa? Sure hope not.

I know being a student is a poor thing, but that's what you signed up for. This is HIS fault. I seriously doubt that the coaching staff NEVER told him not to take money from agents.dumb dumb dumb. He will not play again for sdsu. Time for the aztecs to close the book on the Malik project.

I am not for paying players and certainly against schools/shoe companies paying for guys to go to certain schools, but it seems like if agents want to loan money to players that shouldn't really impact the school or the kid's eligibility. I guess the issue would be that if are just called "loans" and they never have to pay it back. If they are legitimate loans, I don't see any issue with this type of thing. When I was in college, I got some extra student loans just so I could have a little extra cash. Don't blame kids for wanting to do something similar.

Getting paid makes you a pro (even if the agent puts in on their books as a loan, it is an 'improper benefit'). Of course it effects a players eligibility.

I think Malik has played his last game as an Aztec. If it is, how do they handle “senior night” with him?! Agreed. Clap.

Really hate holier than though takes. We live in an imperfect world. No one is perfect. Why do shady people like this agent always keep immaculate records of their shadiness?

If Pope has played his last game I guess that means the Nolan Narain era has officially arrived (and I, for one, don't think that's a bad thing), dude has pro-moves on offense and his 'D' is improving by the game.

If it is a loan, how is it a violation? At most you could say he got a better interest rate, but on $1,400 the difference between 7% interest and 0% is about $98. But how is it a benefit if he has to pay it back? It is a financial transaction between an agency and a player. And it can be pretty easy to assume the agent wasn't offering loans to any average non-athlete, hence the assumption that his status as an athlete is the reason the transaction took place. It is a benefit, and impermissible. Sucks, but I won't argue if he never suits up again. Protect the program.

It isn't about holier than thou takes. Receipt of a "loan" in this fashion appears to constitute a violation of NCAA "extra benefit" regulations and places Pope's eligibility in jeopardy. If the appropriate punishment under NCAA regulations is his loss of eligibility, those are the breaks. If you want to instead argue that the rules should be changed, that is a separate question.

Shabazz Muhammed was in a similar situation and repayed the loan (maybe with interest?) and got a 3 game suspension. School was fine. Hoping something similar happens here. Timing wise and CYA though, it might be a wrap.

He knew it was wrong to take the money so he brought this mess on himself. I just Hope SDSU doesn't get dinged for it.

How does anyone know if he paid the loan off? The NCAA(what a joke) suspended Winston Shepard 3 games for a car loan co-signed by a family member. I don't see how this reflects on the SDSU basketball program. It reflects on Pope and that's all.
I would think the program would suspend Pope for the rest of the season. This would give Narian a lot more playing time and experience and more playing time for Rooks.
We have two 7 footers signed for next year, so lets play our best for remainder of the season and move on. Other schools have lots more to worry about then we do.

Everyone take a breath. Jesus. Look at the names on that list. Villanova. UNC. Duke. Kentucky. The president of the NCAA called it "systematic failures." I call it what it is, the NCAA making millions and millions off these kids. The NCAA is getting what they deserve. A loan from an agency does not implicate any wrongdoing by San Diego State. Let's just wait....because this is FAR from over.

What genius created a balance sheet of compiling a list of their illegal benefits provided? And what genius didn't destroy that balance sheet 3 years later? I don't mean to detract from the situation, but wow that is some incompetence. The only thing this was missing was a postmarked envelope to the FBI.
