cfbhuddle.com/2016/05/04/big-12-expansion-candidates-meet-choices/2/"SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS
Location: San Diego TV Market: San Diego (No. 28)
Home Venue: Qualcomm Stadium (70,561)
Undergraduate Enrollment: 29,234
Conference realignment is inherently a gamble, and few options offer as much potential upside and value as San Diego State.
San Diego State’s inclusion isn’t based on credible suggestions or rumors, rather the logical appeal of the university.
The basketball program grew to national prominence over the last decade, in that time building a rabid base of local support.
While the fan backing has yet to come for football, the Aztecs’ success on the gridiron should catch attention. Last year marked the first outright Mountain West Conference championship in San Diego State history, and the 2016 team looks even better on paper.
San Diego State’s academic profile grew parallel to that of its athletic department, as its now the most prestigious university in the Cal State system.
San Diego State makes a ton of sense for Big 12 expansion, realistic suggestion or not." A very accurate list of SDSU's assets, minus the beaches, palm trees, mountains, and deserts! (The mention of the school's academic progress is especially gratifying.) But, once more, as much as this portrait makes sense, there is no indication that the Big-12 does more than yawn. Don't forget, the author says "...realistic suggestion or not." (Also, regarding Houston, the author does not discuss the probable hostility of the Big-12 Texas schools toward the Cougars. In other words, it's an interesting and informative article, but I don't think it does much to advance the discussion. I mean, really, Tulane?) AzWm

Note this quote from the item you link: " We're still talking about mostly underwhelming programs such as Cincinnati, Connecticut and Memphis. (And BYU.)" No mention of SDSU. (Or BSU or Fresno State, either.) Folks, it ain't happening! AzWm

Again, a list of possible Big-12 expansion candidates that does not include SDSU.
Oklahoma president David Boren has made it clear he believes the league’s very survival depends on taking two more schools (from a group that probably includes, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Houston, Memphis and South Florida).
If one assumes that this list is accurate (it may well be totally spurious), that makes SDSU no better than eighth. That would rule out SDSU even if the Big-12 expanded to 16, which is highly unlikely in any event.

You're giving way too much weight to random bloggers and writers. We have no idea if the assets we offer, as compared to Cincy or whoever, should be or are of interest to the B12. The only people who know that right now are Bowlsby & a few others he has involved in exploring expansion. Not someone on ESPN, Ohio Press, Texas Crap Paper, etc.
What we do know is our administration has talked to Bowlsby & have been in communication. Where that goes, who knows?
Yes, we're prejudiced, but so are 99% of the writers/bloggers writing these articles.
I would be more inclined to be sympathetic to your views if there were at least a few cases of commentators mentioning the name San Diego State University in the context of Big-12 expansion. Yes, SDSU has positive assets that should make it an excellent candidate for Big-12 expansion.
But it also has one obvious negative. That is our location at the extreme southwestern corner of the Lower 48 states. I understand that a case can be made for the inclusion of SDSU on the grounds that it opens up a beachhead in California. I'm still waiting for evidence that this reasoning is shared by the people who count, namely the decision makers in the Big-12 conference.
As things stand now, it looks like BYU and one other school (likely Cincinnati) will be the first ones given an invitation. My own view is that the Big-12 is likely to be quite satisfied with 12 members. The often mentioned speculation about 16 member P5 conferences seems fanciful to me. For one thing, four 16 member P5 conferences would assume the death of one of the current P5 leagues. Which of those is going to volunteer to fall on its sword?
The most important, and uncomfortable, fact is that our location makes the Pac-12 the most sense when thinking of which major conference we might join. But at the same time its also true that that Pac-12 would never invite us unless maybe two or three of their current members were destroyed by giant meteorite strikes.
AzWm
People who write about the B12 tend to live within the B12 region, so their focus is going to be on schools that are within their region. So basically you'd like the UT to write more articles about what's happening in the B12, and how SDSU fits into that. Writers carry zero weight.
Moving West would involve a full commitment, meaning they'd need to be adding more than just 1 school. They'd need to expand to 14 or even 16 for that (including us) to make any sense.
Doesn't matter though. Whatever the B12 does it's going to be temporary IMO. There will be a major realignment, most likely around 2022 when all the contracts come due.
We just need to make sure we're positioned well when everything starts to turn to chaos, like it did a few years ago. My guess is we eventually end up with 4 or 5 conferences of 16.
The B12 as it looks today won't look much like it in 4-6 years anyway, and unless both the MW & AAC evolve, neither will look like they do either. All we can do is make ourselves attractive, which means having success, drawing eyeballs within SD, and improve the facilities so we're not too far behind when an invite does come.
Personally, I don't think they add BYU.

Art Briles said recently that during the meetings he has attended regarding B12 expansion, the talk is that expansion will happen, although he is not part of that decision process, and nobody is really interested in his opinions on the subject of who to invite.
I will say this, however.....If you don't sign your daughter up for the pageant, they won't be putting a tiara on her head.

Sterk has certainly been "signing our daughter up for the pagent" behind the scenes with the power brokers. He has been less focused on complaining about the widening gap between the G5 & P5 and rather focusing on making the best case for SDSU's inclusion. If and when they choose to look west SDSU will certainly be on the short list. If we get an invite or not TBD. . When (not if) SDSU builds "SDSU West" that will significantly improve our chances and is something SDSU can control. Go SDSU WEST! Go Aztecs!

If this were really true, you would see mention of SDSU when these "power brokers" open their mouths and the names of other schools spill out. If they really thought SDSU was a consideration (or if they had been effectively lobbied), they would be priming the press for such. If SDSU wants the B12 to take a good, hard look their way, they have to insert themselves in the public dialog by scheduling as many contests with B12 schools as they can. That means doing a few A-H-As in football, getting into B12 basketball arenas and baseball stadiums. Running the girls at the Texas and Kansas Relays, and swimming at Texas, and playing tennis at Texas and Baylor, softball at Oklahoma, volleyball at Kansas. Make the Aztecs look like they are already a conference member so that B12 administrators, coaches and fans are as familiar with SDSU's athletic programs as they can be. If you read an interview with a quote from a B12 president, AD, faculty advisor or head coach that mentions names of potential targets and SDSU isn't mentioned... well, that's not a good sign. You can be assured that either not much is being done, or what is being done is not moving the needle.

Perhaps the BIG XII has already told SDSU they won't expand this far west in private? Short of what you mention the best thing we can do is expand to "SDSU West." SDSU will be in a better conference in the future. If that is a P5 or s best of the rest is TBD. Go SDSU WEST! Go Aztecs!

Even Oklahoma can't get its house in order. A Regent goes public he is against expansion. There's infighting at Oklahoma over potential Big 12 expansionThe most strident and powerful voice in favor of Big 12 expansion has a significant opponent at his own school. Max Weitzenhoffer, the Oklahoma board of regents chairman, told CBS Sports he will try to convince influential OU president David Boren to ditch Big 12 expansion. "I can tell you I'm not alone," Weitzenhoffer said. The seven-member board, which serves as the school's governing body, will meet Thursday. At that time, Weitzenhoffer said, he will seek clarification on the board's input regarding the school's vote on expansion. At least one other regents member, Oklahoma City Thunder chairman Clay Bennett, is against expansion, Weitzenhoffer said. "One-hundred percent [with] what we've been talking about," Weitzenhoffer said of Bennett's position. "We just want to let him [Boren] know, we don't like it. "If it goes forward, it may get to the point where we may not be able to stop it." It seems clear the regents have the final say in the expansion discussion at Oklahoma despite Boren's powerful influence.

In the article about OU's in-house fighting, there's specific mention of stadium size and seating capabilities, with 45k being a small number! I've always been in favor of a 40k - 45k seat stadium, so that was a bummer to read.

IMO, the ONLY current P5 conference we would ever have a chance of joining is what is known currently as the Pac 12, and I am not holding my breath about that (although I would love to be proven wrong). It makes no sense for the Big 12 to expand to the west unless they plan on adding at least 4 western teams. In any event, SDSU is stuck where they are for, what, another 7-10 years until all the P5 TV contracts start to expire.

So when are the B12 meetings .? Seems various schools have different thoughts on expansion some say yes , some say no and some form a committee to further investigate expansion of B12 or expansion of the college playoffs from 4 to 8 . 10 schools so you get 12 to 15 opinions . Some schools think there are no schools that Deserve to be added . WVU wants travel buddy for basketball - football it does not matter other then what will schedule look like and divisions - that could be a major up roar ! ISU said it wanted schools that ISU could beat in football -so it can get to a Bowl game . Others realize that TV markets are the key or areas that could help recruiting .
