There was a group behind the west goal post that did great with signs. But I don't think that was where the student body was congregated. There was only one game where the students showed up in mass, then nothing. Suggest that the "SHOWs" sign be removed from hanging in the east corner of the field where the student seats are located. If they only want to showup at basketball games and not at football games the sign should come-down, as it is an ad. Don't bother with crap excuses, don't they get free tickets? That is not working, so extract as much fees from them as possible. The tickets are free to them so they can enjoy one of the benefits of the college experience, and at the same time participate in suporting the team. Walkofan...Proud of the TEAM, GO STATE! We're not supposed to call each other names on this board. But I will say that your post has a lot of similarities to a post I imagine one who is an idiot would write. First of all, students pay fees in their tuition that go to athletics and makes tickets "free". Secondly, as someone who has been privileged enough to be a part of the show for a while, I'm proud of the identity we created and you won't tell anybody $#!+ what we should or shouldn't do with our name. Thirdly, you would make an awful father because punishment, like the one you are suggesting, does not encourage positive behavior it eliminates behavior. So if you were to start charging for tickets you would get about 5 students a game. I award you no points, and my God have mercy on your soul. LMAO. Epic. "If either of you attempts to cheat, particularly with my wife, who is a dirty, dirty tramp............"

Weather, cost, stadium, soccer games ,home work, lazy and any other lame ass excuses that have come up are the same s#!t we have been hearing for years. Alumni and students are not going to go to the games until they are fashionable! The hard core 17-20k will go until they die. But the bandwagoners won't show up until we are on ESPN, or in the Top 10 or some celebrity get arrested at the game. The Show is something that started years ago with 10-20 students that joined the 500-1500 of fans that supported team back in the days of 2-18 records. As the players got better, we win more, the Show got bigger and some press, it became The Place to go and be seen. But, don't fool your into believing that football wasn't something to go to and enjoy back in the 70's. And there were a lot of us there(students too) and we had a winning team and a great time. Will we ever be Alabama or Notre Dame? No, but we are not Duke and Indiana in BB either. So maybe someday it will be the thing to do, but, until that time keep the excuses coming.

Attending a game at Viejas is the cool thing to do as the tickets are hard to come by and the atmosphere is electric. A game at qualcomm is half full so the atmosphere sucks and there is always 30,000 tickets available. Football is actually at a much better place now then where basketball was in the Sports arena days. Building Viejas was a game changer for the basketball team. I think you'd see a similar game day experience with football if a similar venue was built for them on campus. I also think Sterk knows this. Winning was the game changer. Even with Viejas, nobody watched us go 5-23.

A small percentage of students are great fans, but most are not. A small percentage of alumni are great fans, but most are not. It's not the divisive issue of students vs. alums so many love ping-ponging around here. Do your part. I'm late to the party, but this post nails it.

These threads are terrible for one reason:
THE PEOPLE YOU ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT ARE NOT ON THIS BOARD. THE APATHETIC STUDENTS AND ALUMNI ARE NOT READING YOUR POSTS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT COME TO THIS SITE. YOU ARE COMPLAINING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST AS PISSED ABOUT IT AS YOU ARE.
My God, I hope I die before I get old and become one of you.

Speaking on behalf of many of my friends who are students:
Football games just aren't as enjoyable to go to. Taking the trolley, first of all, is a hassle in and of itself (compared to rolling out of bed and being at Viejas). Second, there's no atmosphere, which is sort of a double-edged sword. There's no atmosphere because students don't go to the games; students don't go to the game because there's no atmosphere. I've only been to a few games this year, but they just weren't enjoyable.
Not to mention, for the casual fan, football is just not as fun to watch as basketball. Yes, there are the hardcore fans who will go to any SDSU sporting event even if they don't like the sport (props to the hardcore Show members), but to the average sports fan, going to the Q and watching Air Force run the triple option and get 3 yards every carry is probably the most boring thing in the world. Add that to the lack of atmosphere, and there's really no motivation for anyone to even go.
In conclusion (hmm.. I think my RWS teacher taught me never to say that), I think athletics needs to do something. Make the games fun to go to. Advertise on campus (I talked to Freshman this year that didn't even know you could get tickets for free). Have some sort of fun stuff. Give away T SHIRTS. Students f***ing love free shirts. Have a sign competition: the fan who makes the best sign gets 2 bowl game tickets. ANYTHING. The marketing department needs to give the football team some sort of recognition or nothing will ever change.

A conclusion to be drawn from the above which I think everyone can agree on is this.
Although there is a great atmosphere at Viejas Arena, there is a poor one at Qualcomm and the quality of the product on the court/field is only one of many reasons.
Many we'll get lucky and Qualcomm will just fall over some day when nobody's around.

On Saturday Dave and Buster's t-shirst were thrown into the crowds on the home side. The guy next to me caught one. When he unrolled it, he discovered a giftcard as well. A sign competion is a good idea. This team is turning the corner, it's just a matter of time before the knock off that big opponent at home. Will the students be there to lead the run on to the field???

I'd say a good % of men and women are not football fans, or of any sport for that matter. That's reality that we sports fans can't comprehend. So from how big of a pool are we talking about that are making these excuses to not show up? My guess is it could very well be <5K students. So getting 2-3K of them to attend would be a successful achievement.

Get the most handsome football players. Shoot some promo pics of them and hang 'em as banner near the dorms, sororities, female clubs and hell, all over campus. Aztec sex appeal. Sell it!

I know Sterk knows this because I wrote him a letter regarding this very topic. His response regarding the stadium issue was that SDSU has contingency plans in place if the Chargers leave or if they stay in San Diego. Of course, he did not elaborate further.

You don't see students because the marketing sucks, no tradition, and no unity. Also, half the season ticket holders I sit near don't even know the rules of the game. It's quite sad and these tickets are 50 yard line plaza level. It will take a while for tickets to find themselves in the hands of real football fans. When I was a student there was absolutely no attempt to market football to students on campus. There were no signs, banners, nothing. If you read the Daily Aztec there might be a story, but that's about it. Also, I lived in a dorm (guess which one ) and there was no attempt to market college sports among the dorm denizens either.
