Well it looks like we are probably Poinsettia bound now that Fresno won and that should up the Q attendance quite a bit. esp vs BYU! Game will likely sellout. Although, part of me doesn't want to play BYU anymore but they look beatable by our team this year and that would be good karma sharing MWC title and beating BYU as we move to BE next year!

One word: Atmosphere. The atmosphere and energy at Viejas is amazing as well as the quality of the team and the venue. The quality of the football team is making strides but the atmosphere for college football at the Q is horrible. The stadium is an old crumbing, rusty mess with horrible sight lines and the fans are way too far away from the field to have a great atmosphere. The sound system and even the PA announcer are some of the worst I have ever heard. Compare the atmosphere at Viejas and the Q then you know why people don't fill the Q. Even walking around on game day there is 95% chargers decor. The Q does not even really feel like the Aztecs home stadium. New stadium needed to reach the next level. Let me get this straight, the reason the students do not come is because the stadium sucks. If that is the case, why are the Chargers averaging 61,000? It is the same stadium. The Chargers and the NFL have an excellent brand and the Chargers have had success on a national level. People will go watch the Chargers because it is considered an event with national exposure. Aztec football is not known on a national level and can't even been seen on tv by many in San Diego. When you bring people to a basketball game they are impressed by the atmosphere and experience even if they are very casual fans. When you bring people to an Aztec football game the overall experience is not very impressive. When people go to a Chargers game at least the stadium is full and has more energy. The stadium still sucks though. The SDSU athletic department has a long way to go before the Aztecs can ever complete with the Chargers and the brand the NFL has built. For Aztec football to really have better attendance we need to provide a better atmosphere and experience to the casual fan. If we were a national BCS powerhouse like USC people would go to games no matter what (like the NFL) but since we are not then we have to provide a better game day experience to get more butts in the seats.

If everyone encouraged at least 1 friend to go to a game with them, which I'm sure they would end up enjoying and wanting to return for another, we'd have 45,000+ I brought a group of 10 today and have brought as many people as I could all season. I must admit it is like pulling teeth to get people to come to the Q and many of the people I ask are SDSU Alum's... Several of whom have turned down every single invitation!

Where to begin? Simply put, people only have so many entertainment dollars to spend. Currently, San Diego is unquestionably a Charger town. If the Chargers would move to LA people in San Diego would likely (depending on the quality of the product on the field) pay attention and shift some of those entertainment dollars towards Aztec football translating into more viewers, fans and revenue.
A bigger issue is a stadium. Once the Chargers leave it will trigger a 5 year lease clause on Qualcomm stadium. This means SDSU will be forced to find a new home for thier football team within 5 years. Ultimately, this will result in SDSU building an "SDSU owned stadium" somewhere near or on campus at SDSU. An SDSU stadium need not cost a billion dollars as a Pro NFL Charger stadium wants/requires (well less than half that amount) or require as much land. It also does not need to seat 70-80k; more like 35k-50k seats (expandable in the future if need be).
In addition, an SDSU stadium would have Aztec colors, signage, gift shops, advertising, concessions, locker rooms, etc (none of which the Aztecs have now)... Not to mention more of a college game day feel and atmosphere. Furthermore, the recruiting windfall the Aztecs would experience would be tremendous. I know for a fact that SDSU already has contingency plans in place for if the Chargers stay in San Diego or leave for LA. I hope it is the latter (forcing SDSU to act now). I don't like playing @ Qualcomm and tire of riding the coattails of the Chargers

The Q is simply too damn big. Frustrating because if you packed the 30,000 fans there today into a much smaller stadium the atmosphere would be entirely different and much more like Viejas. Stanford and Cal don't draw that much better, but just looks and sounds better in their smaller stadiums. Ohhh and the students actually go to their games who are always the loudest and most active.

Something really needs to be done to get more students to the games. I'm not sure if it's marketing or what (I mean you can't really beat free and a five minute ride to the game!), or even who should be ultimately responsible for it, but something has to be done.
The student council should also bear a lot of the responsibility as well. Any other ideas??

I think there are a number of causes but the students used to come in droves when we had those crappy seats on the field level. It was generally expected for us to go, they involved Greek activities and permitting banners by student orgs, etc. I think it was a much more inviting environment, notwithstanding permitting us to fill plastic milk jugs with the remnants of our kegs from the parking lot.....
I won't put the blame on the students if the alumni are showing. I can't imagine not scheduling 6 weekends a year for Aztec football if I was anywhere within driving distance.

On the topic of where the students are, I was also a little disappointed that after a HUGE win IN Boise that so few students showed up. The game was late enough that the kids had rolled out of bed and were in a position to be able to go, but early enough that it would not interfere with their Saturday night plans.
Vista High School gets better student support than SDSU (in terms of the total number of students attending games), and it's got only a tiny fraction of the school enrollment.
The Athletic Department needs to do a better job of marketing the games to the students. Those SHOULD be the future season ticket holders. If they don't get into the habit of going to the games now most of them never will.

It's not entirely comparable, but my son attends UCLA. Yes, they are good, but their student sections are amazing. It makes me jealous.
1. They provide busses to the rose bowl, but you still need to make a reservation.
2. The stadium is far, old, uncomfortable but students still go in droves and stand the whole game.
3. EVERY student knows all of the cheers, gestures, and songs. Incredible.
4. No alcohol allowed in student section. Yes, I know the reality but it's not the focus.
5. The students really care about the team, not the wins and losses. It's a cool environment
I know many of you hate UCLA, i am an Aztec for life as is my entire circle, but seeing their games a couple of times really makes me long for a different environment.
So, it's not the distance, the age of the stadium, the sight lines....it's that the culture is not there. I am not sure how to change it but go to a bruin game and sitin the student section. It's an eye opener.

What the "it's halloween weekend" excuse does not work for this game? I am sure losing at home earlier this season to San Jose State did not help. I see every year they show up early in the season, then the team sleep walks through a game, loses to a team they should have beaten and then they stop coming. I remember when there was 10 students in the student section at old Cox Arena for Aztec basketball, 5 of them looked like 30 year old guys who read comic booksin their mom's basement.

This was probably mentioned in the other 3 pages after this one, but I'm not going to read them all. Student section extends 2-3 sections more to the right of this picture. That's where almost every student was yesterday.

I don't understand this thread. In fact I've never understood any thread calling out a group of people for not attending a sporting event.
Sure we give our friends a hard time if they miss a game for a stupid reason, but the reality is people are under no obligation to come to games.
Students will come to games when it's decided that its the cool thing to do on campus and they know they will have fun. That will take a long time to develop. Just like basketball.

There was a group behind the west goal post that did great with signs. But I don't think that was where the student body was congregated. There was only one game where the students showed up in mass, then nothing. Suggest that the "SHOWs" sign be removed from hanging in the east corner of the field where the student seats are located. If they only want to showup at basketball games and not at football games the sign should come-down, as it is an ad. Don't bother with crap excuses, don't they get free tickets? That is not working, so extract as much fees from them as possible. The tickets are free to them so they can enjoy one of the benefits of the college experience, and at the same time participate in suporting the team. Walkofan...Proud of the TEAM, GO STATE!

We're not supposed to call each other names on this board. But I will say that your post has a lot of similarities to a post I imagine one who is an idiot would write. First of all, students pay fees in their tuition that go to athletics and makes tickets "free". Secondly, as someone who has been privileged enough to be a part of the show for a while, I'm proud of the identity we created and you won't tell anybody $#!+ what we should or shouldn't do with our name. Thirdly, you would make an awful father because punishment, like the one you are suggesting, does not encourage positive behavior it eliminates behavior. So if you were to start charging for tickets you would get about 5 students a game. I award you no points, and my God have mercy on your soul.

I am disappointed that the Greeks don't come out in large numbers. I was going to bring that up. I'm pretty sure the Greek system at SDSU is about dead thanks to the last 10 years, but The days when the Greeks were able to put their banners in the field level, there was a large turnout. The team weren't even very good.
