Weak support from the students, alumi, and community in general. But if we end up in the pbowl, the place will be packed.
Win there and there will be a lot of buzz going into next year. How we handle OSU x2 will say a lot about the attendance for the rest of the 2013 season.

30,000 was not a bad attendance number for SDSU.
… don't forget that the trolley costs students $5 for a RT. So maybe students will have to get a further perk of free trolley rides to and from campus to create a rise in the attendance numbers. Realistically, that'll never happen. So it's not hard to see why more students don't show up.
For basketball, they only have to walk a little way from the dorms and apts to Viejas.
And BB games are two hour time investment vs. 3+ for football.
And football is "Boring" while BB is more fun.
(These are just a few of the reasons given by at least one SDSU student I know who doesn't show up for football games even if she gets a free ticket and a free ride…)
Small sample size theater for sure, but it's a data point. LOL

As Rocky said, it's tough to recruit when you look up in the stands. Would any of you want to play here when the stadium is an echo chamber??

If the trolley is so expensive, the use the SDSU shuttles or rent a couple of buses for 6 hrs.
I bet the on campus promotion is horrible and nothing more than an Ad in the Daily Aztec.

It's a commuter campus. So there needs to be better community outreach. At least a few days last week the U-T (gag) did get it right with Aztec sports coverage.

very very poor support for a team that may crack the Top20.

The stadium looked good at the beginning including students, but it got dang cold in there and ,many filtered out after the third quarter when we were blowing them out. Believe it or not, crown noise was a factor in the third quarter. Loved it.

How many student tickets were distributed/used? That's probably a good metric.

This. Those are all for the students -- not just the 1 1/2 sections the students who actually did show up today sat in -- just as they were for the first game when they did show up. Pathetic. Shades of Sports Arena basketball days. Build it on campus and they will come.

for a team that may crack the Top20. Not a chance. We'd have to jump something like 18 teams.

I think the effort to engage students has been poor. We need to do more until it becomes a normal thing to go to football games like at other schools. There has been a 20 year void of program enthusiasm among students so we need to kick start it:
SDSU athletics needs to do a better job marketing for one. It is incredibly easy these days to target students. Place a sponsored ad on facebook targeting those graduating 2013+ . It's not that hard
Why not do a post game concert one time a year. Get Switchfoot or somebody to play after the game. It has worked really well for the horse races to bring in younger people.
More ideas are welcome. And of course an on campus stadium would be a no brainer for a boost

There has been a good student attendance at 3 games this year; the first game when there was a freshmen tailgate sky show, and another game (I don't remember which) when there was a special student tailgate. The school has to make games more of an event and a place to be if they want to rebuild student interest.

Don't be too hard on the Marketing department. It's not like SDSU is a business school

I think the reason the students didn't show up is because they didn't want to.

Last years Boise game really set us back for a while. We had a ton of Students at that game and Lindley and Co blew it.
We've made great strides this year, and if we can keep this type of play up next year, which I think isnt very far fetched, I think we may start seeing 30,000 as the minimum attendance at games.

Why is everyone picking on the students? They are at fault but they only could fill maybe 10,000 seats. I am pissed at the community for caring more about the crappy Chargers then the 8-3 Aztecs. 40,000 empty seats they could have filled. Would anyone care if the stadium was full except for an empty student section?

Can't wait for the Chargers to leave. More Aztecs fans! Yeah!
On another note, 7 home games this year and last is probably a bit of a dilution for our program. 6 home games is perfect.

40,000 fans is pretty good attendance for a non-BCS team. 35,000 from alumni and community + 5,000 students shouldn't be too much to ask. The alumni and community was pretty close today, the students - not so much. Feel bad for this team, because they deserve better. Hopefully next year's move to the Big East will be better for attendance.
