The Padres signed second-rounder Dane Phillips for $450K, significantly less than the pick value of $734K for the No. 70 pick. The catcher/first baseman is said to have a sweet bat and has a chance to stay behind the plate. The Padres will announce they've signed first round selection Max Fried, MLB.com's Corey Brock reports (Twitter link). Fried, a high school left-hander, will obtain $3MM, MLB's recommended bonus for the the seventh overall selection, according to Dan Hayes of the North County Times (on Twitter). Fried has a fastball that's been clocked in the 88-95 mph range to go along with a plus curveball and a promising changeup, Baseball America reports. Lucas Giolito, the Nationals' first rounder, was a teammate of Fried's at Harvard-Westlake high school. www.mlbtraderumors.com/

Both Buxton and Correa are future stars, IMO. I like Fried's chances to develop into a frontline starter for us and I like the decision to draft him over Appel because of the penalties associated with going over budget.

Padres sign 25th round pick for big bucks. The Pitcher slid to 25th round because he told all he would only accept 500K minimum. That is late second or early third round money so once he wasn't drafted at those positions others were not interested becase of the new rules. Padres again very smart working the rules of the draft.

Kimber didn't sign after all. He changed his mind, a la Karsten Whitson.

Kimber didn't sign after all. He changed his mind, a la Karsten Whitson. Interesting. I wonder how accurate the stats the coach broke out were. I bet he didn't tell him about players who turned down decent bucks but never were drafted again. It will be interesting in 3 years to see where he stands.

Mark Appel does not sign with the Buccos. Meanwhile, the Padres sign their first 17 picks, including a potential star lefty in Fried and another stud righty in Weickel (both first round talent).
I believe the Appel debate is over. Lets just celebrate another exciting group of prospects that we can speculate on for 3 or 4 years!

Don't forget about Eflin, either. Another stud high school pitcher. Very satisfied with this draft on paper.
