Where is boise going before July 1st? Why add now what you can add in three weeks? If Bolder, Lawrence and Manhattan are availaible, doesn't that trump Boise? Dead on correct. Boise will be there no matter when we invite them. What we need to wait for is the Big 12 to hold together or collapse. If we could pick up KU, CU and/or KSU it would be a dream come true.

I think the most likely option is 14 with boise and the 4 Big12 cast-offs; but, it could very easy be 12, and if we already have boise, that means two might be left out between iowas state, sdsu, new mex, unlv, wyo - WYO has the gang of 5 going for them, SDSU has the market and recruiting base (we could also develop a supporter In UCB in that they have a predominant West Coast/California Alumni base and having a California destination (as well as a vegas one) could be a concession for them - that is one of the reason they've wanted into the pac for so long), UNLV has some history and destination, New MEx has proximity. Staying pat now, makes it more likely that if a deal is done with the big 12 left overs the pressure is either put on the small 4 to jettison iowa state or go to 14 with boise, being at 10 makes it less stable and more like a combo conference.

The big issue is that the Big 10 has not invited Nebraska. Odds are they have to either stick with a Big 12 that is shaky or go to the Big 12 and ask to be let in with no promises. I think the Big Ten hasn't yet invited Nebraska and Missouri for only one reason: the chance that ND will come but that the Irish will only come if it is one of just 12 mouths to feed. As to the Pac-10, my biggest fear for SDSU is this. If the Orangebloods report is wrong about thePac8/Big12-6+2 deal being contingent on Nebraska going to the Big Ten, THAT'S when we could be screwed. Consider who holds the aces in this poker game. If the leftover Big 12 schools are only KU, KSU, CU and ISU, the aces are going to be held by Kansas, a basketball school, and to some extent its in-state rival, KSU, another basketball school. Perusing their boards, there's already speculation among their fans that having SDSU and UNLV in the same conference would therefore be good for them since although playing on the road against the two of us would be a long trip, it would be a good one in the sense of helping their RPI. HOWEVER, if the leftover Big 12 schools are not just those four but also Nebraska and Missouri, the aces aren't going to held by the Kansas schools, but mainly by Nebraska, a FOOTBALL school. Will Nebraska be interested in being in the same conference with SDSU and UNLV? Hardly. No, Nebraska would look to create the kind of football-centric conference TCU fans are now quietly salivating over. And when it comes to conference composition, football is going to trump basketball any day of the week. So to conclude, we Aztecs need to really hope that Nebraska goes to the Big Ten or that Orangebloods is correct that if the Huskers don't, the Pac8/Big12-6+2 deal won't happen. Since I think Orangebloods is wrong about that, I sure hope Nebraska goes to the Big Ten.

Let's go with Nebraska being availaible and would obviously have Dr. St. God. Tom running the show. The choice will become proximity - Does Nebraska want a 10-12 team in the midwest/south with Utah as the deep boundary, would they be willing to go national extending from utah, south to dallas/ft worth, and east to kentucky and/or Ohio - that is a damn big conference and a nightmare. I think they'be more inclided to go 14-16 with the mtn west and two divisions with limited cross-over. San Diego and UNLV will always be paired and both have market and destination going for it. I think it is going to be hard to exclude them unless Nebraska was willing to go national at which point they are either going to utah or ohio on a regular basis, as well as likely still having the still lengthy travel into texas.
But to the point, I think we both know Nebraska is either in and so is the big 12 or is out and so is the big 12. A MWC 14 is then most likely with the mwc9, plus iota 4 plus boise. Two spots are then open for anybody to earn or for any possible cast=offs down the road

SGF- You make some very good points. The only area that I may differ, or at least throw out something to think about regarding your well thought out response is this:
IF...the Corn and Missouri stay put, which I agree, would leave them in the drivers seat...then the balance of power shifts to them, and "WE" leave the MWC to join the Big 12 remants.
IF..the Corn and Missouri leave...and only leaves potentially Colorado, KU, KSU and ISU...then the balance of power remains in the MWC and THEY will join us. Which, I believe the MWC would leave out ISU.
However, saying all that...if the Cougar sentiments are a relfection of at least our president, in almost every scenario I have read, I would say 90% of every potential conference, new, old, or mixed....has SDSU and UNLV in it.
I think there is a new "Gang of 5" so to speak. BYU, Utah, SDSU, UNLV...and maybe CSU. Might have to say perhaps there is a "Gang of 4" seems that CSU is waning as of late.
If Nebraska stays, then the Gang of 4 would jettison the MWC I believe, plus the Colorado schools (and/or Boise State possibly?) to form a new Big 12 conference.
Nebraska Missouri ISU KU KSU Colorado Colorado St BYU Utah SDSU UNLV TCU
Wyoming, Air Force and New Mexico stand to lose the most if the balance of power stays in the plains...but something similar to that I suspect. (throw in the best of others and BSU to get to 16?) But, in any case...SDSU and UNLV will always be in it. Location location location...it's good to be the king.

Borg Very succintly stated...location, location, location. It's a long standing real estate concept that has proven true over the years. It's applicable here, in a sense, in that it also translates out to TV sets. Unfortunately at the moment those TV sets can't get the MTN so it's essentially turned off. But, that's now and I think the concept of location remains valid. I hadn't heard SDSU's chances in all of this put in such a simple straight forward statement. Just saying nicely stated in a very understandable way what your thought on all this is. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.

Borg, thanks for the support.
I will say that it occurs to me that Nebraska might have some interest in UNLV and SDSU in the sense of having them in might help with football recruiting. After all, there isn't much in Nebraska to choose from.
As to other MWC members, if anybody faces the potential of being left behind, it's Wyoming. The reasons are obvious. I also think if Colorado winds up in the Pac as it appears the Pac is going to require (they aren't dumb enough to let the Texas legislature force them to take Baylor), then if Nebraska doesn't go to the Big Ten, CSU could easily also be left behind with their long-time rival.
For those who may be curious, this is the type of fallout which seems to be some Horned Frogs' wet dream:
TCU Nebraska Missouri Kansas K-State Boise St. BYU Utah Houston
It would probably be Yoda's wet dream too since in his world, it would mean that SDSU, UNLV and UNM would grovel to return to the WAC. (Personally, I would rather be subjected to Chinese water torture.)

TCU fans have really exposed themselves over on the MWC board. I'm trying to be open minded about them. I think they're just hopeful of setting the all-time record for most conference memberships within less than 20 years. (Four would have to be some kind of a record, wouldn't it?)

My token guess as to how I think the dust may wind up settling on the MWC...
(divisional breakdowns attempting to group by geography and also to maximize competitiveness in both football and basketball)
West Boise St TCU SDSU UNLV UNM AFA (or Baylor, if CU if the TX lockstep breaks down) (____) (maybe Houston, or Fresno... not Iowa St)
East BYU Utah Wyo CSU CU (alt, AFA) KU KSU
That's assumes a great deal, and is a little optimistic, but a very reasonable guess... I think.

Conferencequake! I think Notre Dame will remain independent, Missou and Nebraska and maybe ISU will join the Big 10. The Big 12 will absorb TCU and Houston, The MWC will bring Boise St. on board, while the PAC 10 will essentially stay put.
At least the Aztecs bring something of value in their large TV market to any potentially new conference. Is there any possibility that the Pac 10 would open its doors to SDSU?

Although fans of other schools have been very patient, the TCU "we're going to build a new stadium if admitted to the Big 12" thread on the Mountain West board really takes the cake. Makes me motivated to drive down to Viejas this year when we host them in BB so I watch the onslaught.

I had started growing sick of TCU fans for some time (new mexico fans too, because they have some odd entitlement that they aren't equally responsible with SDSU for the bottom of the league and that they are guaranteed to go anywhere that might pop up) but that stadium thread really put it over the top. bunch of new money d-bags.

K5, how would a better Wyoming on New Mexico be better for our conference than adding Boise? [/quote]
Not wanting to put words in K5's mouth or anything, but there are 3 criteria for achieving AQ status, and the MWC meets 2 of them. By bringing up the bottom teams, of which WE are one, and improving there nat'l ranking, we'll meet all the criteria to become an AQ conference.

I really don't understand that, given that Texas and TAMU look upon TCU in much the same manner that UCSmellA and USuckC looks upon SDSU. And seriously, while there is a lot of interest in the Smack-10 here because so many San Diegans attended Smack-10 schools, there is no way any of those schools control this market the way UT and TAMU control the DFW metroplex market. $#!+, those guys are bragging about getting 35K attendance in a market that's than twice ours. According to Wiki, quoting the Census Bureau, the estimated 2009 population was 6,447,615. Even with their recent success, 35K attendance sucks. If SDSU had done what TCU has done over the past few years, we'd see at least 50K in the seats. =Bob
