BCS will be gone by then - supplanted by new mega-conferences. When we finally get to the party, we'll find it's been moved.

This is crazy stuff. Could a conference as strong as the Big 12 simply disappear overnight? During existence of the Big 8, Nebraska was king. Although NU has struggled greatly since creation of the Big 12, it's still king of the Big 12 North and since the North division is already so inferior to the South, if NU leaves, that would be a huge problem. And NU does apparently want to leave because NU just hates Texas. Reasons include a mediocre UT team knocking NU out of the NC championship game in the Big 12 championship game in about 1996, Texas then being the leader in moving the conference HQ to Dallas, ending Prop 48s that NU had benefited from, the inequitable TV deal that benefits Texas far more than anybody and the fact UT has now been pushing to relocate the football championship game from Arrowhead Stadium to Jerry Jone's place in Dallas. Bottom line is Nebraska just hates Texas so I see no way Beebe can hold the conference together.

We're a small conference of nine teams ... adding BSU just makes good sense for a number of reasons ... call it insurance, call it strengthening the conference ... or just positioning to add more teams (up to 16 when the fallout occurs) ... but act now.
I've always noticed when a dance is going on ... if you do not ask folks to dance ... you tend to end up with not the most appealing partners! By being agressive ... you not always end up with your desired dance partner ... but at least you had your moment ... and you just never know how it might turn out.
Inaction in dynamic times ... tend to not bring positive results. As all have said this is a very critical time for SDSU football ... and it's just extemely frustrating watching the dance ... and expecting something good to happen.

Reacting after " there is more clarity about what will happen with conferences around the country." is a death sentence. Here's a self-evident truth:
NO MATTER WHAT THE OTHER CONFERENCES DO, IT WILL NOT BE GOOD FOR THE MWC.[/b]
Book it. Bet the house, the kids, the dog and the 401K. So why wait? I'd be doing everything I could to throw a monkey wrench into other conference's plans.
For the MWC to survive, it will need to be a 14-16 team conference encompassing markets with as many TV sets in them as possible. Houston would be the first on my list. Then I'd extend invites to as many of the Big12 schools as I reasonably could. Colorado would be in my sights then maybe OK St.

Bottom line is Nebraska just hates Texas so I see no way Beebe can hold the conference together. Agree. Texas would have to make a lot of compromises simply to appease Nebraska so they can be convinced to stay. However, the on-going feud between these two schools seemed to have widened the gulf that I cannot see them building a bridge so they can meet halfway. Even if somehow many backroom deals are done to save the Big12, the distrust will continue to linger which makes the commitment to stay in the league very fragile and temporary.

This is crazy stuff. Could a conference as strong as the Big 12 simply disappear overnight? it wont, they will add MWC members before that happens. Don't be so sure about anything. ESPN Inside College Football said about an hour ago that the Big 12 could be done depending on what happens. Then, a guy specifically said that the Mountain West didn't have to add Boise State at this moment and it made sense to hold right now until other things shake out - especially with Texas and the need for all of the Texas schools (including Baylor) be involved if Texas, Texas Tech, and Texas A&M go to the Pac 10. The comment about U of Texas holding the big cards (or big balls or whatever) is right on. Craig Thompson looked like he got whipped by the MWC board and was not happy with their decision. For everyone who has complained about the system, it is about to change in a big way. Cards will be reshuffled and new games are being played. We can only hope that our leaders and administrators have the mettle to get us in a better situation.

It may be a bold move but it will only produce an embarrassing outcome. Besides, why would we expand by adding Houston if the size of our revenue pie will remain same? These AQ conferences are expanding 'coz they know how much more money they can get with addition of certain schools. OTOH, Houston doesn't do anything to improve our position to gain access to BcS or increase our revenue. In other words, even though we don't like it, we're in a wait-and-see mode.

When I heard Thompson on tape today I got another impression. Today is not the day, but later this week or next when the dominoes begin to fall might be the day to decide who gets in. If you think you are going to get, say Colorado and Kansas from the trashed Big 12, why announce Boise now? I no longer think the MWC will get left out. There will be schools to pick from Heard today again the media types saying Big East and Big 12 are gonna fall apart.

This is all based on your assumption that there is not another dance going on somewhere else with better looking dance partners. There is obviously a lot of information and things going on behind the scenes and if you think that our leaders don't understand the significance of what they are doing right now, then you must have a low opinion of them. Making a decision just to make a decision is not always the best move. We can only speculate right now and dissect the actual decisions and moves later once they are made and the facts become available to us.

If the Big-10 wants Texas, they might go along with bringing Texas A&M along too. Adding Rutgers, Nebraska and Missouri would close them out at 16 teams. That would leave 4 teams for the PAC-10 from the Big-12, and the PAC-10 comes knocking on the door of the MWC for 2 teams to bring them to 16 teams. At that point, does Boise State have any interest in making the move to the MWC if they have lost 2 of their 3 power football programs?
Stop! Scratch all of this. The possible scenarios are so numerous you could go nuts "supposing". Lets see if anythin happens before the end of the month.

Dufresne is correct that all the dominoes depend right now on what happens with Nebraska. I think his source is wrong about the odds of the Huskers going to the Big Ten, however. Sure looks to me that rather than 60-40 against, they are more like 70-30 in favor.
We should know by Saturday when the Big 12's ultimatum kicks in and the Nebraska Board of Regents meets.

He is one of the worst columnists in the nation - he spends his time trying to be funny instead of having credible sources; national beatwriters of a specific sport should not try to be TJ simers. He is much like ESPN - they have offered nothing to the story and so their opinion is not exactly desired. As example, he wrote a column the other day that nothing was going to come out of the pac10 meetings, of course not including a single source although seatlle papers for instance had quotes from the UW parties, and then it emerges with full power being granted to scott.

The big issue is that the Big 10 has not invited Nebraska. Odds are they have to either stick with a Big 12 that is shaky or go to the Big 12 and ask to be let in with no promises. To translate they have a decent looking girl (Big 12) they are dating but have the hots for the model (Big 10) but can't go after her until they are single. And if she turns you down, you are having to date a girl who has a good personality (MWC). So do you stick with the sure thing or go after the the wow knowing that if it goes wrong, you get less than you started with? They should put this decision on ESPN instead of World Series of Poker.

I think the MWC should have acted first and taken Boise State. They could still add other teams to make super conference if it came to that. Yes, the Big 12 could dissolve depending on what Texas and Nebraska do. I don't think the Big 12 will poach TCU unless they only lose one or two teams.

On the Brian Kenney ESPN radio show this evening, Thompson was interviewed. Thompson said that his interpretation of the MWC presidents decision today was that it came down to ... is the MWC in a better position to go to 10 teams now and gain possibly BCS status or wait and maybe go to a superconference of say 16 teams for positioning with other superconferences that may happen in the future. He mentioned the now very tired mantra of ... we want to not only be reactive but proactive.
Proactive would have been to take BSU today making us a strong 10 team conference ... and the ability to add up to six teams (such as four from Big12 ... KU, KSU, ISU and CU ... and two more that make the most sense) in the future. Adding BSU today would have positioned us better for what comes our way. I fear we are being way to reactive ...
Kenney also used the "dance" analogy ... referring to not waiting too long to attract desirable partners. I believe Thompson is being the good employee ... but his looks and voice tell another story of the decision today.

Where is boise going before July 1st? Why add now what you can add in three weeks? If Bolder, Lawrence and Manhattan are availaible, doesn't that trump Boise?
