JACKSON, Wyo. — Boise State is not going to the Mountain West today, anyway. Commissioner Craig Thompson announced Monday that the conference’s nine presidents have decided to wait to make a decision on expansion until there is more clarity about what will happen with conferences around the country. Some comments from Thompson: "They didn't vote. They opted not to expand." "The topic expansion is very much still alive." "It's very confusing times for everybody." Thompson called Boise State president Bob Kustra. "I simply said our board at this time has made a decision not to expand," he said. Smart move. I would like Boise in the MWC but we need to leave options open right now. Would love to have Colorado, Kansas and Kansas State in before Boise.

I'm guessing that there will be some Big-12 leftovers to feast on. The question is, who eats whom? Does the Big-12 survive and poach the top MWC schools? Or does the MWC survive and add the Big-12 have-nots?

This is wild stuff.
I think Boise State would be a great addition, but by Thompson delaying the announcement, it puts the MWC in one heck of a position for big changes.
I still think Boise State will be a member of the MWC when it is all over.

Boise would have only strengthened the conference. Better to be proactive than reactive. Perhaps the decison makers believe there is not going to be other expansion going on. We shall see.

I think it would be better to add Boise after the end of this upcoming football season.
Considering that both Boise and TCU will both have a great chance of finishing undefeated, having them in the same conference for the upcoming season to play each other will, obviously, guarantee a loss for one of the teams.
If they both finish their upcoming seasons undefeated this year, then adding them next year would bolster the conferences bid to gain acceptance in to the BCS.
I am with the group of people that thinks Boise should be added to the MWC, just not until after the 2010 football season.

Even if they were added now, they wouldn't play in our conference this season. I think this is a good move. Boise State needs us more than we need them. One or two of our bottom teams improving would do more for our cause then adding Boise.

The 2010 football season is already set - if they had been added, they wouldn't have been playing until next year.

not good. this increases the likelyhood that the Aztecs will be the WAC again. The Commissioners tone is not good. not to be doom and gloom, but MWC could be done.

Well if we wouldn't have to play them, then I think adding them would've been the smart thing to do.
K5, how would a better Wyoming on New Mexico be better for our conference than adding Boise?

It could be gloom and doom or it could be the best thing that ever happened. The issue is the MWC has NO control over what will take place and what it will need to do. Best scenario for us is to have the Big 12 fall apart and PAC 10 go to 16 and Nebraska and/or Missouri go to the Big 10. Temas will be begging to go to the Mountain West and it will elevate us to a major conference.

ESPN's Outside The Lines will be on in about 10 minutes (after Sports Center).
They are going to talk about the new developments. Hopefully they will talk a little MWC.

As I mentioned in another thread, the fact that the MWC already had their own cable network puts them in a strong position. I think the Big 12 only poaches MWC schools if they only lose a few teams. If they are raided (6 to Pac 10, 2 to Big 10), then the MWC will scoop up the leftovers (or some of them).

I believe one year notice is required to leave a conference, which means we should still have until late August to add Boise, right? Boise would be a nice addition in a push for automatic qualifier status if things remain the same. But it's just plain smart to wait what shakes loose from the Big 12. If it's about TV revenue, and in the end it is, don't forget the entire state of Idaho has just 1.5 million people while San Diego County alone has 3 million.

This is crazy stuff. Could a conference as strong as the Big 12 simply disappear overnight?

The MWC would need to add Boise State before July 1st if they want their past 2 years to count towards the 'four year analysis' towards and auto-bid into the BCS. I also think that is the date to officially play in the MWC for the 2011-2012 school year - so I don't think they do have until August to make the decision. Being that they still have over 3 weeks, it probably was a good idea to wait. No reason to make a decision today that they can make on June 30th if that is still the direction to take.

Why isn't adding Boise State NOW not a good move to strengthen our conference so we can possibly lure teams from the Big 12 if it falls apart? Waiting to see what happens is the worst thing we can possibly do. Schools that wait usually end up in the cold. Unbelievable, just when I thought things were going to come up roses for the MWC and SDSU things start falling apart. Anybody here "fired up" to play in a glorified WAC?

I actually disagree....BYU/Utah are the power brokers in the conference and why would they leave to be part of watered down Big 12 when they could invite some teams to become part of their conference - the MWC. If the Big 12 only loses a few teams (say Colorado & Texas to the Pac 10), then I could see TCU moving over with maybe Houston to fill the gap. I don't see the BYU/Utah going anywhere.
