This all started with a rumor that has no basis in fact. This probably needs repeating a few more times before people understand.

Thanks for the Twitter link...I think this is a dead topic now since it is unlikely ESPN ever really tried to get the game.

The Oracle understands most of the logic discussed here, but those of you that don't want the game to be on ESPN just because it is ESPN are ignorant Did anybody actually say that? I read people saying they dislike ESPN AND want them to have to pay top dollar to get the MWC product. I didn't see anybody say F them because they're ESPN. Implicitly here, and explicitly on other threads. Most Extreme Elimination Challenge was a great show

The fact is the MWC is tied into a rinky dink television deal and schools in the conference will remain at a recruiting disadvantage so long as they are tied into the small-time mtn network. The mtn network is only available on cable systems in areas where there are MWC schools. Some of the mtn football and basketball games are picked up by CBS College Sports Network. To get that on Comcast you are required to also purchase NFL Red Zone, Fox College Sports, Fox Soccer and the Tennis Channel. A very few of the MWC games are picked up by Versus, which is usually available under the same package as ESPN. The mtn is also available on Direct TV.
What does it all mean? With TCU leaving the conference nobody living east of Colorado will be able to see MWC games on TV unless they are in an area where Direct TV offers it. Pretty tough to recruit nationally when your TV exposure is limited to about 25% of the nations population.
I believe the small-time TV deal was a major reason for the departure of BYU and TCU from the conference. We can expect continued loss of national exposure as the conference continues to become weaker.

Isn’t it kind of a bad precedent to set to tell ESPN that we will take less to be on their magical network? I mean talk about taking away any kind of leverage for future negociations…

20 victories is getting us all that attention on ESPN. It is about winning. Being on ESPN does not help us much when you get 1 or 2 games.
Being in the top 25 gets the attention of everyone.
Itold a TN guy about the Mountain being ranked ahead of the SEC and he though that was wrong, so I e-mailed him and asked how many top 10 teams does the SEC have? Then he said I was too sensitive.
The only thing that counts is keep winning. The whole country is not going to by tickets to basketball games were we have no tickets.
We you want to be able to hire a good coach to replace Fisher will will take money.
We have to get more TV money so we need to play hard to get.
What if ESPN told us to go independent and they would give us the same deal as BYU. What would we do?
Then they could have great BYU Aztec football and Basketball.
We have to make our product more valuable.
I still think BYU would want us to go with them to the Big 12 some day.
We have a Love hate relationship. Terley can be ring master.
BYU used sand paper on our eyes ref.

The mtn. was never supposed to be our main channel, it's supposed to be the third tier of our coverage. It does what it was designed to do perfectly, a la the Big Ten Network. If our TV Deal is hurting recruiting somebody needs to let recruits know. It seems our schools are recruiting at a better pace than ever. If anything I think it helps. No matter where the kids lives, you can tell his parents get DirecTV and you'll be able to watch every conference game on TV. The only problem with our TV Deal is the national distribution tier and there's nothing that can be done about that until Comcast no longer in control.

Since I have Cox Communications and also have HD Service (which required digital service), I also have the sport tier and therefore have the Mtn. I go to all the home games but I'm greatful I can see most of the road games (MWC games at least). I am happy with the current arrangement.
If I had Time Warner I would be furious at the MWC (& Time Warner) for not only the Mtn. but also NFL Network and the greatest thing since sliced bread and boneless chicken - NFL RedZone. Direct TV would be an option I guess, but no Padres Baseball then.
So, I guess each person's view on the TV contract is largely tied to which cable system happens to service your area.

I actually think we will want Comcast in control on this one. They are ging to make a major play in the sports television landscape as soon as all the merger stuff is complete. They are the largest cable company in the US and with the NBC assets added in they will have the ability to force their will on most others when it comes to programming carriage agreements. They will have too many "must haves" for their customers. The fight with Direct TV for Verses is small and Verses on its own does not command much, but now Comcast will have NBC, a slew of owned and operated NBC affiliates, USA, CNBC, MSNBC, SYFY, Verses, Golf Channel, The Mountain, the various Comcast Sports Nets, and a bunch of others that it could bundle together as one package, so they will say "no Verses, fine, you get none of these...package deal now" Their strength will be in that bundle. It could be a good thing later down the road (from the distribution side) especially from what we hear they are wanting to do in the Video on Demand area and with digital. Best thing Mtn West can do is to stay relevent, which will raise interest/demand and make them look at the TV deals. Comcast could add it to all their own markets tomorrow if it wanted, 23,000,000 subs nationwide, and most in top 20 TV markets. The bad in all this could mean rates for all go up...cable and satellite both.

I could give a Flying F Rats @$$ if the game is on ESPN, Vs., or CBS as long as I can watch it up here in Nor Cal. So far, the only game I've been able to watch this entire season on TV is Gonz game (ESPN) because I don't get CBS Sports (cost prohibitive to upgrade my cable just to get the few CBSS games).
All I know is that it better be nationally TV'd next week on one of those Big-3 or I'm going postal...

That's the VS/CBS CS part of the deal and it may not be the best but I don't know if there's a better deal out there waiting for us. It's not like ESPN has a bunch of empty time slots on Saturday for MWC games and I don't know about you, but I'm not down with playing Monday through Friday, no matter what network it's on.

CBS College Sports - 57 million households Versus - 73.8 Million households ESPN U - 72.3 Million households ESPN & ESPN 2 - 99.4 Million households OR: CBS-C + Versus = One helluva lot less households than the ESPN networks. And I don't know whether this has occurred to anybody else but . . . When I travel on business, I tend to want to just relax and veg out in the evening. Helps me get to sleep faster in a foreign environment. I therefore tend to read on watch the tube in my hotel room. And my hotel room ALWAYS has ESPN and has ESPN 2 about half the time. It has Versus and CBS-C almost never. But of course, it's more important to earn an extra 10% or whatever than to have the conference's games broadcast to the greatest possible amount. Comcast just sucks and this news is just more fodder for thinking that next week they're going to add USU and either UTEP or SJSU so Comcrap will kick in a few more nickels.

I'm also assuming that those numbers represent the households with access to the channels. If you factor in the households who actually receive CBSCS or Versus the numbers probably drop significantly. ESPN is part of just about every basic cable or satellite TV package. For many people Versus and CBSCS are going to require an additional subscription to some sports package. My assumption is you're correct, Lath. ESPN and ESPN 2 are on basic cable and basic satellite everywhere. Not so ESPN U, I'll grant you that, but also not true of CBS-C and Versus.
