I am heading to work and don't have much time right now, but felt obligated (since there were approx 8,000 views on the two threads I put up a week or so ago) to mention there was a meeting last night on campus about the Aztec Warrior and Zuma.
There were 11 people in attendance including the original Aztec Warrior Foundation board members.
We talked about pretty much every issue that has been on the Zuma threads in the last 2 weeks.
I would like to start with one thing. A SDSU mascot board member told me during the meeting that I should come on this board and apologize for the things I said last week in those 2 threads.
I REFUSE!!! I should not apologize for anything I said. And as I told that SDSU board member...Nearly everything I said in those threads were confirmed at last nights meeting. Don't ask me to apologize for stating my opinion.
A quick overview on what I feel comfortable talking about.
-The SDSU mascot board admitted they dropped the ball on getting a new Aztec Warrior and they are putting an ad in soon to rectify that. This is a very positive move in my opinion. We also talked about the original agreement that there would be two Aztec Warriors. A back up just in case.
-Zuma...The meetings usually last about an hour. This one lasted 2 1/2 hours and yes Zuma was the main topic. The meeting was very heated and spirited.
All I will say at this time is that all issues with Zuma were talked about. All Zuma actions were reviewed and the University is re-thinking the role of Zuma.
We (the AWF) did not demand that Zuma to ousted, but there were suggestions that Zuma is being used incorrectly and being potrayed as our mascot.
Nothing was settled as the meeting ended, but it is a beginning.
I want to thank all that supported me on these threads. Without the two threads and our actions I do not feel there would have been a meeting like last night and even though we didn't solve everything, it is a step in the right direction.
I want to thank the Admins for showing up. They knew it was going to be a tough meeting and the fact that they embraced the AWF to attend and express our opinions on the issue is definitely a big step in the right direction.
More meetings are planned and I am real anxious to see what comes out of these meetings.
To those on the SDSU Mascot Committee, I respect all of you and I know how hard your job is. I just hope you will keep your eyes open and remember the original plans and goals.
And that was to have 2 Aztec Warriors ready at all times and that the Aztec Warrior is our mascot....Not Zuma, not anything else.
LONG LIVE MONTY MONTEZUMA!!!!
***If anyone was at that meeting and wishes to comment on what I said above, feel free. All opinons on this very important issue are welcome.

Steve, why did you tell me via pm that you didn't go cause you weren't feeling good? Why do you feel that you have to lie?

Good work, Steve! Thanks for the report. I have always been disturbed by the political correctness that rules so much of the academic world. Having said that, I guess I am not too sorry that "Monty" was replaced by the Aztec Warrior. As a retired Spanish teacher I am thoroughly familiar with the history of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the role Montezuma II (or Moctezuma, if you prefer) played in that epoch. Perhaps we should have used Cuauhtémoc (who came to the thrown later and is better thought of in Mexico than Moctezuma II) rather than Monty as a mascot. The problem with Zuma is two-fold. First, as has been pointed out many times, he looks more like a cougar (ugh!) than a jaguar. Second, why have two mascots? I can't think of any other school that has two mascots, though there may be some. Too bad this whole thing has gotten political, but I don't think the vast majority of Aztec fans are responsible for that. AzWm

Steve, why did you tell me via pm that you didn't go cause you weren't feeling good? Why do you feel that you have to lie? Two reasons. You didn't identify who you were when I asked you and you said you had a contact who was at the meeting. In the PM, you even told me exactly what time I left the meeting, so obviously you do have that contact. Why did you contact me for info, why didn't you just ask your person who was at the meeting?

That may be the official line, but what is the average fan to think? AzWm

AzWm Last night at this meeting William, it was agreed by both sides that zuma is not a mascot of the school. Untrue. It was stated by the AWF that it appeared that Zuma was being moved into a position that he could possibly replace the Aztec Warrior. The Admins said that is not true. The AWF still feels uncomfortable with Zuma in the position he is in. Neither side agreed on anything with that issue. It will be discussed later again.

I'm getting the feeling that what began as a PM exchange between a couple of you on this topic has spilled over into a public airing of personal disagreements. A bit like a bar fight that has migrated to the street outside. Maybe such exchanges should be kept at the PM level since they really are not central to the issue, which in this case is the question of whether Zuma is a stealth mascot-in-waiting.
(Please note that I am posting this as WLR, which, as I have explained on other occasions, gives the message a more official stamp.)

I seriously can't believe all the vitriol on a stupid mascot.
